Corporal Dominik Mazur reached up and grabbed a rather large, exposed root to pull himself closer to the crest of the hill. Corporal? Could he still call himself that? He wasn't sure what was left of his unit. The battle that had scattered it had been short and decisive. He didn't want to think about the poor souls trapped in the post office they had been heading to reinforce.
Dominik glanced back at his 2 compatriots following him up the hill. A couple of fresh privates, just barely out of training. Private Izbiki was the youngest. He had that naive "optimism" still flashing in his eyes as he reattached the shoulder knot that had been pulled loose in their semi-vertical crawl. These kids somehow had the misconception that if they maintained discipline and stayed together with their squad leader, they had a good shot of making it through.
Corporal Mazur turned back to the the task at hand. It had been days of trudging eastward through the forests, trying to stay ahead of the German advance. Just over the hill was the city of Lwow, which was rumored to have recently repelled the German attackers. Perhaps if they made it there, they could rejoin their comrades in arms.
Cresting the hill, Kondrat fumbled to release his binoculars from his field pouch and focused in on the roadway into the city. He blinked hard and looked again. "What is it, Corpoal?" Izbiki asked with apprehension. Do the Germans have the city?
Corporal Mazur took a deep breath as he turned away from the organized line of Polish soldiers being marched as prisoners back into the city by their captors. "It might be worse than that." he said, handing the binoculars to the private.
As Izbiki peered down at the Soviet soldiers patrolling the entrance to Lwow. The young soldier's optimism faded with the realization that there was nowhere to run to in the east. Corporal Mazur Chambered a round in his Poln 98 rifle. "It doesn't matter who's leading that march down there. Those aren't prisoners they are marching - they are our reinforcements. They just don't know it yet."
Batlleline Heroes is a tabletop RPG set during the ravages of World War II. The setting is deep and immersive allowing roleplay during any phase of the war, from whatever vantage point you desire to play. Most players will choose to play active duty military or organized partisans in occupied territories, but there are character classes available for police, politicians, special ops, and even a few for civilians!
The combat system is fast and easy to learn with classes providing "perks" that operate as skills, and rules for training in cross-class perks at higher levels. The weaponry in the game is authentically researched, and as it was in real life, it is incredibly lethal. In fact, the wise player will exercise extreme caution before lunging into battle - but will not hesitate when the time comes for action.
Lead the charge to rescue your town from the tyranny of the German occupation, storm the island of Iwo Jima, charge across Africa in your Matilda II, or defend Stalingrad from the rampaging anti-communist forces.
Or, if you prefer...
Avenge the injustice of the Treaty of Versailles, restore the glory of the Roman Empire, enforce the Emperor's divine will for an Asia for Asians, or make midnight raids on Soviet encampments with your fellow Finish Ski Troopers.
The possibilities are endless, and the "game board" is quite literally, the world you can imagine. With sample mini-adventures provided in the 300+ page core rulebook and 2-way mission briefs available as add-ons, you and your Historian (the Game Master) will have everything you need for unlimited gaming in the most formative conflict of the 20th century.
Character Creation (or Avatar creation as it is called in the game) is quick and easy. Pick a side, select a class, make 3 rolls, and voila! You have an Avatar. Of course, if you have lots of time on your hands you can customize it with some advanced rules and add as detailed a history as you wish, but essentially, that's it. Why so quick? Well, when you are playing an RPG set in a conflict that caused the death of 60 million people, you are likely to need a new Avatar quite frequently!
You Like Miniatures or Board Games Better Than RPGS? No Problem! Battleline Heroes has such a streamlined and elegant combat system, that you can literally ignore the RPG portion of the game, get out your WW2 minis - or just some plastic army men - and play out combat scenarios provided in the Core Book, Mission Briefs, or downloaded from the Website! In fact, there is a section in the Core Book showing players how to generate a balanced combat scenario for tabletop miniatures. If you prefer hex-maps and cardboard counters, that's fine too. Our Strategic Operations section will allow you to play such battles out to your heart's content. There is even a suggestion on how to integrate larger battles into the storyline before, after or during your RPG adventure!

Risks and challenges
While the standard RPG style rules system is close to completion, our intent is to produce a strong "Strategic Operations Mode" that will allow for larger scale combat at the strategic level, aerial combat, and naval combat. These items could always be released as separate add-ons, but if we get enough support for the base game, we will include them in the core rulebook. Our experience building card and board games with DGA Games will translate nicely to these add-on sections that are usually missing in other RPGs.
Another section we will include if the core book gets enough support is a translation of the base game system to allow for LARP. We believe such rules could serve as an excellent recruiting tool for WW2 reenactment groups.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
