About

Hi, my name is Jon Pointer and I’m the creator of the DoorAjar, and founder of Pointer Solutions, LLC. We are a very small family business in Fort Collins, CO.

The DoorAjar replaces the normal strike plate on an interior door and allows the door to be easily secured in two positions - slightly ajar and fully closed.  The part requires only the two normal strike plate mounting screws and allows the door to be opened and closed like normal.  Though simple, the DoorAjar holds the door very securely in the slightly ajar position - the door can't be pushed open or closed by a pet or person.

Background

The idea for the DoorAjar came from a very simple need - gerbils and cats.  We wanted our youngest son's door open for air circulation, but closed to keep the cats away from the gerbil cage.  Also, we wanted to be able to easily close the door at night for fire safety.  I needed to find a way to easily latch the door in two positions - slightly open and the normal closed position. I was disappointed to find that the solutions available on the market were complicated and clunky. All of the solutions required a strap that had to be disconnected, a jamb that had to be moved, or an extension that had to be removed to allow the door to close fully. There were no solutions that allowed you to simply close the door in two different positions.

We started experimenting with different prototypes - gluing together strike plates, designing on our home computer, and endless plastic prototypes on our 3D printer.  We love the process of inventing!

Many design iterations and prototypes

Eventually we landed on an incredibly simple, patent pending, one piece design. To mount it, you simply remove the standard strike plate screws and use the same two screws to attach the DoorAjar in its place. The design allows you to secure the door either fully closed or slightly open simply by turning the doorknob - no other motions or steps are needed. While simple looking, the shape and angles of the product are quite exact and required a lot of design and iteration to allow the DoorAjar to function properly. The flexible material means that you can accidentally run into the DoorAjar without breaking it or injuring yourself.

Keep the Pets Out and the Air Moving

Our testers have found two primary uses for the DoorAjar: keeping pets out of a room and maintaining good air flow.   Perhaps you have...

  • A room that you’d like closed off, but you want the door slightly open to maintain air flow and keep the room from getting stale - like a spare bedroom or laundry room
  • A house with roommates where you’d like to close the door for some privacy, but not be totally closed off
  • A dog or cat that you need to keep out of a room
  • A bedroom that you’d like to have a little open during the day, but able to easily close at night.

Once you have a DoorAjar, you realize how nice it is to have two possible closed positions.

Our Project Goal

With our design complete and prototypes working in many homes of friends and family, all we need now is a true injection molded part. This will help us reduce the cost, further improve the material properties, and allow us to make higher quantities. That is where this Kickstarter project comes in. We are raising enough money to pay for the injection molding tooling and to run the needed number of parts. It’s important to us to produce the product locally, so we’ve partnered with a local tool maker and molder here in northern Colorado and have secured a quote for our mold tooling and parts. Once our goal is reached, the tooling will be ordered and parts will be ready to ship in 6-8 weeks.

About Colors

We plan to produce the DoorAjar in two colors that you can choose from in the Rewards - "White" and "Nickel" (for a plastic approximation of Brushed Nickel).

Prototypes

You'll notice two versions of the DoorAjar in our videos and pictures - a slightly transparent and "rough" version, and a white, precise, and well-formed version.  The white version is a purchased stereolithography (SLA) part that we purchased to check exact dimensions and show what the final molded parts will look like.  The slightly rough, slightly transparent versions are fused deposition modeling (FDM) parts. They are printed on our 3D printer at home out of a flexible and tough nylon that is closer to the functionality of the final part.  Our 3D printer was critical in developing the exact shape and material choice to get just the function of the DoorAjar that we wanted.

European Customers

Given interest from Europe, I've added this shipping option.  Note that shipping to Europe adds $11 and make sure to check your door hardware to ensure that the DoorAjar will work.

Thank You!

We hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about our project. We’re confident that you’ll find the DoorAjar very useful in unexpected ways, just as we have. Thank you very much for your support and please pass this along to friends and family.

Risks and challenges

The primary risk for our project will be with the injection molding tooling. Though we have secured a good quote and met with the company producing the mold tooling and parts, there can always be unforeseen difficulties in making a molded part. The difficulties can raise the cost and/or cause delays to the schedule. We'll do everything we can to work closely with the supplier to minimize this risk.
