About Bring Baba Yaga Soup

The idea for this show was born in October of 2017, starting as a mere exploration of Jes' poetry, spoken into her choreography. This was an exploratory project entitled The Bone Mother, which was performed at Green Space in Long Island City, ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn, and the Davenport Theatre in Manhattan. The piece evolved to incorporate elements of talk-therapy, psychological Halloweenism, and inklings of witchcraft, all woven into an interpretation of the story of Baba Yaga: a witch archetype, originating from the depths of Eastern European folklore, who gives sage advice, but not without taking something from her visitors. Her story and the dancers' taking on archetypal roles of crone and young woman, and using these archetypes, movement, and spoken word as a means to heal oneself through performance became the driving force of the project.

In the immersive version of this work, Bring Baba Yaga Soup, we will continue to delve into archetypes, pretend, new poetry by Jes, and Post-Martha Graham-Witch dancing, and will introduce the elements of set design, the tarot, talismans, and an interactive experience for cast and audience members to live the story of Baba Yaga and visitors who stumble into her house.

July Residency

With your funding, we will be able to travel to Arts On Site's Residency & Retreat in upstate New York, west of Poughkeepsie, where we will be able to experience the gorgeous landscape, state-of-the-art facilities, and secluded quiet in the town of Kerhonkson. The residency will be taking place the last four days of this July. There, a collaboration of the dancers, set designers, and choreographer will take place, with the opportunity to take advantage of the time together to solidify a collaborative vision and practice for the project going forward. After this residency, we aim to produce the show for a premiere in October of this year.

Risks and challenges

If we are not able to reach our funding goal, we will likely have to cancel/reschedule the residency. This residency is a large undertaking financially, as costs for travel, food, lodgings, and fair compensation for the artists are essential to the project. My first priority beyond basic living essentials is artist compensation, so all proceeds to this project that aren't going to food/lodgings will be going straight to the artists' pockets.

It is very important to us to have the space and time to build an emotionally resonant and well-crafted show, so this residency is absolutely vital to the project's growth. If necessary, we will continue to work on Bring Baba Yaga Soup in our regular studio rehearsal fashion, postponing the premiere date so as to provide our audiences with the highest quality of work we can produce.
