Tortured in the Orchard: graphic novel sequel to a cult film
Join the campaign to develop the sequel to 1997 classic Preaching to the Perverted, by road testing the storyline in a graphic novel.
For years, fans have been asking for a sequel to one of the first films exploring the fetish scene: Preaching to the Perverted (P2TP).
In 2013 it became the first European movie restored and revived by Kickstarter fans.
After the release of Fifty Shades of Grey, P2TP was rated as one of the 10 best films on BDSM/fetishism by The Guardian, 2015.
Fast forward to 2016 and P2TP's writer/director Stuart Urban, fresh from writing and exec producing the ratings and critical triumph of ITV miniseries The Secret (starring James Nesbitt) has come up with the idea for the sequel, and we're going to explore it first in a graphic novel.
Those that know P2TP will remember the very last scene where Peter was singing a lullaby to his baby daughter. Well, almost 20 years have gone by and Stuart has come up with this idea:
How do you imagine Artemis, daughter of Tanya (the dominatrix) and Peter (the devout Christian), will turn out to be when she reaches adulthood?
What has happened in her upbringing, and what will be her interests and orientation as she steps out into the big wide world? Beautiful and intelligent, Artemis is like a hybrid of Lady Gaga and Alice in Wonderland. She is going to enter the helterskelter, hypocrite-heavy World of Westminster and the seat of UK political power...
Fans of the first movie will be excited that original stars Guinevere Turner (Tanya) , Christen Anholt (Peter) and Julie Graham (Eugenie) are all up to reprise their characters, some two decades on down life's journey. Ricky Tomlinson of The Royle Family is also up to return as horrible hack Fibbin' Gibbins.
By participating in this campaign you will personally be playing your part and putting vital funds into the development of the movie, as well as getting your fabulous rewards!
The graphic novel offers a chance to tell the story and perfect it before we set out to raise funds for the actual movie sequel. It will be produced to a high standard (see below), written directly by Stuart Urban, who will work with his longtime collaborator and P2TP comic book and storyboard veteran, Mick Harrison.
Having collaborated on illustrating Stuart’s films and campaigns in storyboard and concept form for almost two decades, the duo are an established team. Mick is a seasoned commercial artist whose comic book spinoff for P2TP was highly popular.
But the novel is just a first step: we would love for there to be extra finance raised for the actual movie’s eventual development generated via stretch goals or surplus funds. We are quite open and proud that your funds will be used for actual film development as well as for providing your rewards.
The Graphic Novel - Details
Stuart Urban has already written a draft storyline as the basis of the graphic novel and is working on visualisation concepts.
The jumping off point will be a prologue showing how Artemis grows up under these two polar opposites as parents - something that the form is ideally suited to, in fact!
The next panels above and below show Artemis's dual influence as she turns 18 of the House of God (upstairs, run by Peter) and House of Thwax (downstairs, run by Tanya). Peter is always worried about what his daughter will get up to with mum Tanya and the priestesses...
When Artemis wins an essay competition she becomes an intern to the oh-so handsome, so young British Prime Minister…much kinky mayhem and a constitutional crisis follow! Eugenie, who remains loyal to Tanya, infiltrates the Houses of Parliament where she polices corruption and lies among Members of Parliament - a superhuman feat! Eventually both will found the Fetish Party and enter politics to much controversy.
The book will be laid out in cinematic landscape format and usually have several images on each page/panel, with a total of 72 colour pages. It will be published in digital, paperback, and hardback form - for specifications see Rewards details and FAQ..
Risks and challenges
While every project carries some risks, the beauty of this graphic novel venture is that those risks are way lower than making a film! As we envisage things, the principal challenge will be to deliver the novel (in all its formats) within the timescale, given that both Stuart and Mick are in demand as successful creators in their fields, but as soon we reach the targets, time will be mapped out and blocked off for precise commitments to the creation and production of the novel. Stuart will complete the storyline's final draft in the month after the campaign ends, and the artwork will then commence. If, for any reason, Mick Harrison should prove unavailable within the contracted time frame for delivery, several suitable standby artists are being lined up, with proven experience in the fantasy and fetish worlds. Come what may with his professional commitments elsewhere, Stuart guarantees sufficient time to complete his work for this enterprise.
We feel the quality of the product can be guaranteed by working with seasoned professionals including graphic designer Rachel May (Skin Two etc) who will oversee layout and so forth, and publisher Tim Woodward (Skin Two, KFS etc) who has great production expertise in magazines, books etc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
