It’s Super Bowl Sunday, and despite the fact that we are deep into New England Patriot territory, no one is watching football. Instead, fourteen hundred hockey fans are standing on twenty inches of ice. This is February in Meredith, NH.

There’s no stadium, no halftime show and no boards on these rinks, which took three weeks to hand carve into the frozen waters of Lake Winnipesaukee. Most of the equipment here has been worn through, so that cold fingers escape gloves and helmets have to be passed off between players as they enter or exit the rink. This is the pure sport right here and it’s poised for a comeback.

“On Frozen Ponds” will take you inside the turbulent and passionate world of Pond Hockey, showcasing the die-hards, the hacks, the committed crews, former pros and small towns that thrive in the heart of New England winter. Following the events surrounding the largest Pond Hockey tournament in New England,“On Frozen Ponds” will document a culture that refuses to fade into history, even as it’s faced with rising temperatures, unpredictable conditions and a new generation of hockey players who may never skate outdoors This is hockey at a turning point, and with a few beers, a fresh jersey and a devotion bordering on religious, these guys are out here to have the time of their life and to ensure that the American hockey player never becomes an endangered species.

Risks and challenges

Like most passion projects, our crew is working for free, editing at night after their day jobs and shooting on weekends. Your support will simply go towards feeding them and making sure they can come home to a warm room after spending all day out on the ice.

After attending this tournament last year and witnessing the pure joy of playing outdoors as well as the many challenges against it (they had to move the tournament to a shallower body of water because the lake wouldn't freeze), we just had to come back and document a piece of American culture that may not be around too much longer. We fell for the beauty of New England winter, the great outdoors and even more then the game, the people who play it.

The weather is a major obstacle that could really affect our ability to capture the this story. Last year, warm weather put the tournament in jeopary. We choose to look at this as part of the drama of the story we are telling. We'll keep everyone updated on our website (www.onfrozenponds.com) as the weather unfolds and you can see the progress the guys are making carving out the rinks.

Two advantages we have are that we've been to this tournament before, so we know exactly what story lines to follow and what teams we want to feature and that we've been given full access by everyone involved with the tournament. These guys aren't exactly camera shy.

We really appreciate any and all support, and in return, we promise to work our (very cold) butts off capturing beautiful footage and editing into all hours of the night. We'll also make sure to keep all of our supporters updated as to where they can view or come screen the final product.

Thanks again and keep your fingers crossed for a nice, cold winter.
