This campaign will fund a new recording project, with the product being a DVD and CD. I will demonstrate my style of rhythm tap dancing, including playing wind instruments, and my electric tap dance instrument. I want to not only show what I do as entertainment, but also to leave a template for younger artists to use as a foundation for further exploration of my methods. I feel that there is a great deal of potential in my methods and that I will not be able to exploit all these possibilities in my own lifetime. I will document several original works and several arrangements of popular or folk materials that showcase my abilities as a tap-dancing saxophonist and improviser. In the course of taping we will be simultaneously capturing audio for a CD which I will sell at performances and online. I have engaged a director for this video who is a professional from the broadcast TV industry. By backing the project you will help me achieve my goal of offering an up-to-date document of my current capabilities. I am middle-aged and want to do this before any unforeseen health issues compromise my abilities. I have several things to record that are my own "standards", and also want to document the artistic growth I have experienced since my last CD project in 2008. My previous projects were self-financed, the last one including loans, but considering my family responsibilities, I do not want to incur more debt. Crowd-sourcing will enable me to complete work that I feel is crucial to my career. The final product will also include as a chapter an already-taped video about how to build your own Tappercussion™ e-tap™ electric tap dance instrument. In addition to showing my own performances, I want my Tappercussion™ instruments to be seen and used by other artists with energy, talent and skill so that it may find it's true potential in modern performance art.
Risks and challenges
I have designed this project to be virtually risk-free. There are challenges to capturing a performance on video as opposed to my previous audio-only releases, especially cosmetic visual considerations, lighting and focus, and the vibrations of a particular venue or date, but my material is all performance-tested and ready to be documented. By using this site for funding, I am minimizing my exposure to further personal debt, yet I remain confident that the product will generate meaningful income over time and that I will be able to deliver a quality product to my backers. I believe it will also aid in marketing my performances and teaching. One comment I have often heard about my audio recordings is that they sound wonderful; due to a variety of performance conditions a live show does not always afford me the best technical conditions to present my art. That is one reason I need to make this video, to capture a performance in optimum conditions. In this instance I have engaged a professional video director from commercial TV who is doing this as a side project as a personal favor to me. I will also obtain enough audio to put together a CD for listening. All of my 5 previous CDs have turned a profit, the main challenge will be ensuring my physical condition for the actual day of the shoot. I plan to schedule an alternate date in case anything goes wrong. This amounts to pre-ordering a CD at the smaller pledge levels, so the risk to backers is also minimal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
