What is Jake Squared?
Elias Koteas and Virginia Madsen star in a surreal comedy about a filmmaker who decides to make a movie to help figure out out how he's managed to screw up every relationship he's ever had. But, the filming spirals out of his control and he has what's either a mystical experience, a total nervous breakdown, or both, as his past selves and past loves literally and hysterically catch up with him.
Who is Howard Goldberg (writer/director)?
Howard is a graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia where he majored in painting and filmmaking. He is the recipient of a Sundance Institute Fellowship, where he developed the feature film "EDEN," which he wrote, directed and Executive Produced. "EDEN" was in the Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival and played widely all over the world.
He wrote, produced and directed the cult feature film "APPLE PIE" and wrote (book, music and lyrics), produced and directed the Off-Broadway musical "BUSKERS." He filmed one of the first rock videos, Rod Stewart's "SAILING." He also wrote the novel "THE KING OF CLUBS" (which was optioned five times for a feature that never got made!). In addition, his drawings and sculptures are in many private collections.
Elias Koteas ("Jake")
Elias is one of Canada's most popular actors and frequently appears in films by Canadian directors Atom Egoyan and David Cronenberg. It was Cronenberg's controversial movie "CRASH" that had Cannes all abuzz in 1996. Elias played Vaughan, a self-appointed "mad scientist" with an unusual fetish - sexual delight in car crashes! As Capt. James Staros, the commanding officer of Charlie Company in "THE THIN RED LINE", he brought sensitivity and compassion to his portrayal of a man who cared about the safety of his men--even at the risk of his own career. In addition, he created the role of the sports-crazed vigilante Casey Jones in the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLE films.
Virginia Madsen ("Beth")
Virginia is one of Hollywood's most talented and beautiful actresses. Not only did she receive amazing reviews for her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated performance in Alexander Payne's hit film, "SIDEWAYS," but this Independent Spirit Award winning actress has an illustrious resume of roles alongside the most notable and respected actors in the business.
Her most recent project is Rob Reiner’s new film “The Magic of Belle Isle,” which she stars in with Morgan Freeman.
Mike Vogel ("Actor Jake")
Mike Vogel is one of Hollywood's brightest young actors. He has appeared in many notable films and series, including "Cloverfield," "Blue Valentine," "The Help" and "Pan Am."
Watch the Trailer for "EDEN"
"EDEN," starring Joanna Going, Dylan Walsh and Sean Patrick Flanery, was in the Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival and played widely at film festivals and theatrically worldwide. It was written and directed by Howard Goldberg.
Clip from "APPLE PIE"
"APPLE PIE," written and directed by Howard Goldberg, first appeared at the Deauville and San Sebastian Film Festivals. It then achieved cult status, playing Midnight showings widely.
This is part of the Dance Sequence from "APPLE PIE," starring legendary Broadway star Tony Azito, and with music by Daryl Hall and John Oates. It has been said (and not just by me!) that "FLASHDANCE" stole their famous dance scene from "APPLE PIE." Well, I guess "stole" is a harsh word. Let's just say they were "inspired."
Director of Photography ADAM BRICKER's Cinematography Reel
Can You Shoot a "Real" Feature on Such a Low Budget?
The answer is, It ain’t easy, but, Yes! In fact, it’s a blessing. Nobody to answer to except ourselves. No bureaucracy to have to deal with. In fact, I wrote the script specifically so it could be shot in the easiest way possible.
But, have no fear, I would never skimp on what must be done to make the film a perfect incarnation of what it should be. We will have exactly the amount of time that we need and exactly the resources we need as well. The last thing I would ever want is for the film to suffer at all for lack of time or material.
Firstly, we're shooting in pretty much one location only. No company moves, no equipment moves. Secondly, we're shooting hi-def with two cameras. Lighting will be minimal and leaning toward pre-lighting huge areas with practical lights so that we can shoot anywhere, anytime. Much of the film will be shot handheld. There won't be dollies and tracks to deal with. Set-ups will be fast and quick and oftentimes instantaneous, moving from one shot to the next almost as if we were filming a play. Very fluid and organic.
How Can I Help?
Donate to our cause. Please!! Every penny will help and all of it will go directly into the making of the film. The more money we have, the better quality film we'll be able to make. Hair, Makeup, cameras, lighting, food (because I'm not heartless, for God's sake! I intend to feed my cast and crew something!). We have some special effects we need to do and then, of course, music.
So please, give as much as you can, grab some of the rewards. Dig deep and then come spend time with us on the set! We'd love to see you. Dig a little deeper and appear in the film.
Can We Exceed the Goal?
Absolutely! And that would be incredible. The more financing we have the better film we’ll be able to make. So, please, even if you see we’re approaching our goal or met it, don’t let that stop you. Lay it on, baby! We’re doing this film on a shoestring, but that doesn’t mean that we couldn’t use two shoestrings!
Can You Increase Your Pledge?
Uhhhh… HELL YEAH!! If you like what you see as we progress and add new cast members and production updates, please go back to our page and click the “Manage Your Donation” button. Any increase in your donation will entitle you to that level of incentive as well.
