As Greg explains here, that is more The Seed than what meets the eye: "At first glance it looks pretty normal. A popular Mod team MDT is attempting to create their own game; a post apocalyptic one that doesn’t stray too far from their familiar settings. However, when you read through the campaign you’ll find that The Seed is anything but normal."

In 2026, 11 years after 'The Event' the human race is almost extinct and survivors are scattered in solo survival efforts or micro settlements.
It is a dangerous world. A land of wolves and survival of the fittest.
Your survival can depend on teamwork and staying with a group. But there are times when you are much better off on your own. Groups are dynamic, have pros and cons. Strengths and weaknesses. There will never be a 100% 'safe' way of aftermath living for anyone.
The following characters are featured in The Seed Act 1 and some of them will play significant roles in certain plot branches while being totally absent in others. Who you meet and who you team up with will be depending on your playthrough and your choices along the way.
Some of these characters have chosen darker paths for their survival and you will constantly have to analyse the behavior of other group members.
In one playthrough a specific character could be your most trusted ally while going against you in another.
Feel like designing one of the characters for the game? The COLONIST pledge will let you do that!
In direct cooperation with key team members you'll design one of the human survivors in the game. You're free to choose his/her social stance, skills, focus, agenda, weaponry and ethical position. MDT will implement this charactor to the story of The Seed. You'll also be credited as Survivor Designer in the game and have a unique artwork designed for you by MDT.
