The Seed, Act 1 is complete!

Dear backer of The Seed

This is the update that we have been anticipating as much as you. Release date for Act 1 is set to June 27 for all backers. It's all up and ready, we're just finishing on final touches along with a round of internal bug testing. We're dealing with excitement levels that shouldn't be possible within the frameworks of known physics. It's been a big adventure for us and every bit of the game was done with love from day 1 to day 1000.

Finally, we are at an end where we can look back and say that we have crossed a bridge. There were times where it looked like this game was not destined to be, times when other similar projects canceled their development, times of good and times of bad. We have had our share of challenges, and if you've been following our updates you'd know what some of those have been.

But we pushed through in troubled waters and adjusted our methods whenever the landscape changed. There were times when we took baby steps, and there were times when we took giant steps, but the important thing is that we were committed enough to reach the destination and honor your glorious support to the project.

For the past two years our two main developers have been working on this project without any funds or budget to aid the cause. The progression and completion has been fueled by personal interest, and commitment to deliver what was brought to live with YOUR pledge and trust in us. We are not saying this to have your pity or generosity, but rather to remain transparent and open about how things are with the project.

We've overextended ourselves with the introduction of three times the length of Act 1 and we are out of budget to continue pushing for Act 2 & 3 for now. We realize this is a big problem for the people that supported us with Act 2 & 3 pledges but we're hoping that the immense length of Act 1 will in some way help with the situation. Just to make this clearer, we absolutely intend to deliver Act 2 & 3 for those who bought them, but the timeframe is uncertain.

In our fanatic obsession to bring in certain aspects of the game up to par with what we came up after the kickstarter, we overextended the length of the game and we added some features that we didn't promise initially (like the personality analysis statistics system).

The good thing is though, that the framework and programming skeleton has now been completed and developing Act 2 and 3 is 'merely' a question of fleshing out the bones with content, both story-wise and with visual assets. Pretty much everything else is fully established and a working program, both for PC, Mac and Linux.

In other words, completing Act 2 and 3 should be done in less than 30% of the time it took us to develop Act 1. And that is even factoring in the unavoidable challenges that always arise in some form or the other with pilot projects like this one.

So right now, according to our calculations, the recommended three playthroughs of the game will take about three hours. We recommended three playthroughs so you guys can appreciate the power your choices can have over the content of the game and to see how radically different outcomes can be had with the tiniest changes in choices.

This has been the most complex and detailed project in our lives and despite the mishaps of breadth predictions we think that you will love the entire game experience once you get yourself in the world of The Seed.

Thank you for all your support so far. We are an extremely small team and every bit of support has been of great importance for us.

Look for our next Update on June 27.

Kind regards
The Seed team

No worries, we might have phrased this badly, sorry.

We just spend several hours to test the pre-release build and reply to this properly.
If you rush through one story/playthrough without watching the intro, without reading the text, without inspecting your inventory, withouth using your GPS, and without reflecting on your personality analysis, it will still take about 30 min.

Also, we are not entirely sure that you can even do such math on a non-linear novel with multiple endings. But you will be able to test all of this yourself tomorrow when we deliver Act 1 to you.

You will have our replies to all comments and questions raised in our next update.
Woo, so excited about this day :)

Awesome news! Thank you for putting in some much effort and persevering till the end! Can't wait to see the result of this amazing project.

      I agree with @Ingo,
If the first act is as good as I'm expecting it to be, I would always come back to back another two acts.
I'm very happy that you sticked to those extra features that you mentioned, especially the personality system - sounds like a really great addition. Also, I believe putting a lot of work into one act and making it as great as possible is always better than trying to rush three acts!
      I'm really excited! Thanks guys.

Very exciting - way to go, guys! This is outside the norm, to keep working when things seem to have fallen apart (funds run out, scope changes, timeline hugely extended) and I respect your tenacity and openness. As a backer of all three acts, I also am not overly concerned about getting the next two, so be proud of this achievement rather than concerned over that.
One real question though, I do have to echo what @kilobug asked with regards to platforms. I use a Mac and Apple mobile devices - what platforms will be ready at launch? I had been hoping to play this on the iPad but since so much time has passed since that was listed on the Campaign page, perhaps your goals have changed as well (and App Store submission requirements likely mean simultaneous iOS launch is definitely outside possibility). Details would be appreciated.

Looking forward to playing this thing so much! Thanks for sticking with it!

Congrats for the release date ! As a backer for Act 2/3 too, I'm all fine with you taking your time to make it true to your creative vision.

Do you have any details about the June 26th release ? Will the Linux (and Mac) version be available at release time too ? And will there be a DRM-free version (hopefully GOG) or will it be Steam-only ?

      We appreciate your supportive attitude.
Think of it this way: we have presented a ton of text to you, but with a single playthrough you will only experience a small portion of that. All the paths you never walked will remain unseen to you and that is why so much text was established, because we had to cover every path possible.
One playthrough has an estimated average length of 1-2 hours, depending on how fast a reader you are and how much you examine your found items, look at the GPS, environment etc.

If you are a slow reader and ponder about your choices before you make them you'll have plenty of length in one playthrough alone.

Also, bear in mind that even three full playthroughs won't let you read through all there is to read.
Many playthroughs would be required to cover it all!

      @Vincent + K swift
Thank you for the supportive comments!
You are guys are always so encouraging and kind.

No worries about act 2 and 3, I for my part (20£ backer) would support you again for them once I have act 1.

You say three playthroughs take three hours? Or is it three hours per playthrough?
I'm not a fast reader and with massive pile of pages you showed us I actually can't believe that it even might be possible to read all that in three hours.

Hi this is great news & thank you for the update !
I fully agree what Vincent as said about being a quality of experience game, not a rushed game.

      Hi Team Misery Dev. Ltd,
This is great news. Thanks for hanging in there through the good and tough times. I look forward to playing the game and remain happy that I helped get you going. I agree that it is better to go for quality of experience rather than to just get it done and say you delivered a game. So keep doing it your way. I hope there is a larger payoff for you, down the line, beyond the gratitude of your backers. Thanks again for the hard work and care.
