Hello there! Sarah and Dave here. Sarah Bryant is an artist who makes books by hand under the name Big Jump Press. David Allen is a Visting Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Middlebury College. Together, we've designed an artists' book that enables a quick and compelling comparison of population data for every region on earth. We plan to letterpress-print and hand bind a limited edition of this book. And we need your help to do it!

Previous books from Big Jump Press can be found in Special Collections Libraries all over the United States, including the New York Public Library, The Library of Congress, The Haas Arts Library at Yale University, the  Houghton Library at Harvard University, and the Darling Biomedical Library at UCLA. We believe that when finished, this book will also find a home in collections where it can be viewed and displayed.

Here's some information about the book.
A population pyramid is one of the simplest and most elegant data visualization devices around. Anyone and everyone can read a population pyramid, and through a population pyramid, anyone has the power to draw quick and powerful comparisons of different regions. The vast and critical differences between the basic equations of life in different parts of the world are all quickly interpretable by comparing one shape onto another.

Population Pyramids for The United States (left) and Uganda (right)

Dave has created population pyramids for every single region on earth using population estimates prepared by the US Census Bureau, which are available through their International Data Base. We took these pyramids and paired them up to create human-like forms.

We are printing each of these figures by hand onto drafting film, creating layered imagery that is reminiscent of dresses, of ladies, of paper dolls. Giving this data a human shape makes it easier for us to identify with the human beings that it represents.

We've designed a box where the figures can be stored and displayed easily and intuitively. Initially, the act of leafing through and experimenting with these figures is playful and investigative. But as a grid buried beneath the hundred or so layers of drafting film is revealed, so is the true origin of these shapes. A narrow waist becomes the absence of the elderly. A boxy figure becomes an aging population.

Making a book is an expensive undertaking (the drafting film alone will come to over $2,000) and we are reaching out to you to help us get started. But we will make it worth your while!

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

Materials and Other Costs
Making a book is an expensive undertaking. The size of this book and the type of materials we'd like to use mean that this is a more expensive project than Sarah has tackled in the past. To produce thirty copies of this book, our target edition size, we are looking at a hefty price tag of roughly $3,800 for the raw materials alone. We also need to find a way to pay for the studio rental while Sarah is printing, a drying system to help us deal with all the sheets of drafting film, and travel for Dave in order to continue our collaboration while the book is in production.

MATERIAL COSTS:

  • paper: $120
  • glue: $25
  • magnets (for the box closure): $30
  • book cloth: $200
  • binders board: $160
  • linoleum printing surfaces: $400
  • polymer plates for printing the grid and the booklet: $350
  • drafting film: $2,200
  • miscellaneous materials/unforseen costs: $250

ADDITIONAL EXPENSES:

  • building a drying system for the drafting film: $200
  • Dave's travel to the UK to participate in the printing: $900
  • Studio rental £70($115)/month for 3 months: $345

TOTAL: $5,180

Schedule
If this campaign is successful, we are ready to move forward as soon as possible.

  • JUNE 2014: order rolls of drafting film and start cutting it down to size. Ship population prints to kickstarter contributers! Kablam!
  • JULY-AUGUST 2014: Order other materials while Sarah is teaching in the USA and drag them back to the England in a suitcase. Finalize the design of the booklet, the box and the grid and order polymer plates for printing. Cut 114 figure shapes out of lino. Select final colors.
  • SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2014: Print! Print! Print! We are hoping that Dave will visit for two weeks to assist.
  • DECEMBER 2014-MARCH 2015: Bind! Bind! Bind! Ship figure & grid sets upon arrival in the USA in late December. Major rewards will be shipped upon completion. Ideally we would like to have several copies of this book ready in time for the Codex Book Fair in California on February 8, 2015.

Risks and challenges

DRYING TIME
The slick surface and unforgiving composition of the drafting film makes it very difficult for the ink to dry quickly, and we are looking at printing upwards of 4,000 sheets of it. Where will they all go??? The test sheets we've been using have taken weeks to dry. Sarah is investigating drying agents to mix into the ink as well as experimenting with various drying systems that she can build in her apartment and the studio where she rents space for her press. If we don't find a great solution, the printing of the book could be slowed down by a few weeks due to a drying bottleneck.

Apart from this unique challenge, we are confident that we can fulfill the rewards speedily and with minimal delay. One of the benefits of the physical structure of this project is that Sarah can begin constructing the boxes before the figures are fully printed. Sarah has produced a number of editions in the past (you can see her editioning process here if you like: http://bigjumppress.wordpress.com/2012/12/17/edition-binding-101/) and we know she can deliver. Would you like her to deliver to your address? We hope so!

Thanks so much for reading about our project!
Best wishes,
Sarah and Dave
