Snorf Industries, (Fun)ctional Hats and Hoodies for Dogs
☆ As seen on Boston.com! ☆
Nothing fits a bulldog. Well... almost nothing.
Most apparel doesn't fit their shoulders, their chests, their necks... and most importantly, their personalities.
I began designing the Original BatHat, BatHat Sport, and BatHat Hoodies with my French Bulldog Enzo in mind. My patent-pending design for hats and hoods protect his delicate, adorable ears, without hiding them from the world.
In Fall 2014, my sales jumped over 700% from the previous winter season. I left my job and turned my living room into a one-woman factory.
With the launch of this Kickstarter, Snorf Industries is ready for professional manufacturing.
I've found a great manufacturer to work with.
My fabric suppliers are ready for my call.
All I need now is your support to turn Snorf Industries into a true manufacturing operation.
Based on many requests, we've added special sizes for three more breeds -- English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, and Pugs.
Snorf Industries cannot continue being a living room operation! With your help, we will continue to make super-premium, adorable hats and hoodies for Snorf Dogs all over the world.
Why would a dog need a hat? Aren't they derived from wolves -- who go their whole lives without hoodies? Well, humans have bred the French Bulldog (and other breeds) into canines who have thin membranes towards the pinnae of the ears, and very little hair to keep them warm. They freeze much faster than our own and if frostbite sets in, parts of the ear can fall off or require removal.
Other breeds who will find BatHats helpful include Dobermans, Chihuahuas, Boston Terriers, Great Danes, Pit Bulls, and even dogs with similarly-thin ears, despite being folded over -- like Pugs and English Bulldogs.
Since launching the BatHat™, we've been endorsed by fans of the product. The French Bulldog Rescue Network published an article about Frenchies and Ear Health, specifically promoting our hats in regards to the subject of frostbite prevention.
Veterinarian Dr. Mary Altomare, DVM, in Northern NJ points out that "there are copious dog products geared towards winter on the market, however none keep the ear pinnas (tips) safe from cold weather while allowing them to stay erect in their natural form."
Here's a Q&A video we made with Dr. Mary about winter ear safety and what she thinks of the BatHat.
We got so much great interview footage with veterinarian Dr. Mary, we made a whole Q&A video about why dogs' ears get so cold, how to protect them, which breeds need BatHats the most, and more! Check it out! smile emoticon
Today, every item is made with Polartec® Polar Fleece, with the exception of the Original BatHat and Santa BatHat.... and each one is made by hand.
Moving forward, this production run will make EVERY regular item using super-premium Polartec® Polar Fleece. Seasonal items like the Santa BatHat will still be made with a great-quality generic fleece.
Each item is sewn with reinforced stitching, which will allow dogs to be tough on their clothes... and you don't have to worry about seams opening up. We know these guys can play tough, and it's details like this that make all the difference.
To see the sizes available in this production run, please click here to visit our sizing guide. It will show you how to get accurate measurements, as well as provide you with all of our breed specific sizes.
The hat that started it all. The Original BatHat hat is adjustable with a wide, secure strip of Velcro that fastens under the chin. Most BatEars will fit comfortably into the ear pockets. Even if ears move around a little during active play, the hat remains a more comfortable option because there's less pressure pushing down on them than your average snood. Made with Polartec® 200.
Choose from BatEars (Frenchies, Bostons) or Tulip-Shaped Ears (Pugs, English Bulldogs). Available in Red, more colors will be "unlocked" (made available) if we exceed our funding goal!
Made with soft Polartec® 100, this is the Original BatHat's sporty cousin. A gentle elastic trim hugs the face to keep this hat right in place. Great for active dogs who like to burrow in the snow!
Choose from BatEars (Frenchies, Bostons) or Tulip-Shaped Ears (Pugs, English Bulldogs). Available in Red/Black, Black/Pewter, and Pink/Pewter. More colors available if we exceed our funding goal!
Get cozy all over with the Original Bathat Hoodie. Made with cozy, lightweight Polartec® 100, this hoodie is perfect for snuggling on a chilly day or a brisk walk in the spring or fall. Great for locations with mild climates and don't need intense warmth of the Winter Hoodie.
Each Hoodie has a cute pocket just above the rump, an opening for attaching a harness, and our signature BatHat hood.
Feedback from customers on this item (and the Winter Hoodie) has been overwhelmingly positive -- many say their dog won't wear any other apparel. And some even say they don't want their owners to take it off after they get back inside!
Choose from BatEars (Frenchies, Bostons) or Tulip-Shaped Ears (Pugs, English Bulldogs). Available in Red. More colors will be "unlocked" (made available) if we exceed our funding goal!
Nothing keeps barrel chests, wide necks, and silly heads warm like the Winter BatHat Hoodie. Made with Polartec®, it's kept dogs warm from Sweden to Alaska and beyond!
Each hoodie has a cute pocket just above the rump, an opening for attaching a harness, and our signature BatHat hood. The Winter Hoodies are made in two-tone color combinations. Our initial offering will be Blue and Pink. More colors will be "unlocked" (made available) if we exceed our funding goal! Choose from BatEars (Frenchies, Bostons) or Tulip-Shaped Ears (Pugs, English Bulldogs).
This adorable Christmas edition of our Original BatHat is made with a cozy, very washable polar fleece. With white trim around the face and a pompom on each ear, any dog will be ready to ride in Santa's sleigh (and fall asleep on his lap as he tries to drive.)
A Kickstarter Exclusive -- only available through March 26th at 9PM EST!
Introducing the BatHat Raincoat with Dri-Belly Technology. While most dog raincoats leave bellies exposed to rain, slush, and snow, this is the first raincoat that STRETCHES under the belly — giving full gender-specific coverage - to keep bellies warm, dry, and cozy.
Here are some awesome features that make this coat so unique:
- Each coat consists of three different fabrics. One is similar to a trench coat fabric, one is a lightweight moisture-wicking liner, and one is a hard-faced, stretchy fleece with DWR treatment. This means the coat stretches throughout — giving a snug, cozy fit while water beads right off it.
- Coats are adjustable around the waist with hidden velcro.
- Our “Dri-Belly Technology” keeps bellies drier than most raincoats — great for dogs who are close to the ground! And each is cut gender-specific — so boys don’t pee inside their coats, and girls don’t have to expose so much of their bellies!
- Moisture-wicking lining dries quickly, should it get wet. It also keeps dog’s hair from making direct contact with fleece, to reduce fur accumulation inside the coat.
- Appropriate for temperatures between 35-65 degrees, depending upon your dog's tolerance of warm and cold conditions.
- Exterior colors come in Charcoal and Navy
- Liner colors come in Emerald, Orchid, Fuscia, and Caribbean.
- Available with opening for leash attachment to collar or harness.
About this DWR Fabric.
Like all DWR-treated fabrics, the coating to the fabric reduces in water resistance over time. There are a number of sports washes available at retail shops that you can use to help lengthen the life of the DWR’s water repellence. There is a Polartec-specific DWR Wash available on the market — we will offer these to our customers at a reduced price.
Haven't pledged yet? Go ahead and select the $60 BatHat Raincoat option!
Want more than one? Simply add $60 for every additional coat you want.
Already pledged and want to add one to your current pledge? Just add $60 for each coat you'd like to order!
WASHING: We've finally gotten pricing on the DWR wash made especially for water repellent Polartec products!
We will, of course, provide you with proper washing instructions for this special raincoat, but as we've said -- DWR products keep you driest if you maintain the fabric's treatment over time. There are plenty of technical/sports washes on the market, but one company worked with Polartec to make one special for these fabrics.
It's usually about $12+ retail, but, we want everyone who gets this raincoat to be able to get this wash - so we're offering it AT COST plus shipping. We will make no profits from this add-on.
So, if you'd like a 12 oz bottle of the Polartec Powercare Shell + DWR Water Repellent washing treatment, please add the following to your total:
Local pickup in NYC: $4.00
Shipping in US: $7.00
Shipping to Canada: $8.00
Shipping Worldwide: $9.00
I already knew French Bulldogs weren't exactly an arctic breed when I got Hildy in 2008. However, I didn't knowshe was born with kidney failure. And for the short 2.5 years of her life, she was always cold. Even when we lived in Texas.
Finding things that properly fit Frenchies, aren't made with crappy materials, and don't cost over $100 wasn't an easy task. Which is why I started making coats that would better fit the breed.
After Hildy passed away in 2011, I continued to make coats for her little brother, Enzo. We moved from Maine to NYC in 2012, and it's there that the Original BatHat and BatHat Hoodie's patent-pending design was born.
The design was inspired by January 2014's Polar Vortex Mania. As silly as it the buzzword sounded, the temperatures sounded pretty awful. And it challenged me to think about Enzo's comfort and safety. Bulldogs aren't designed to handle extreme temperatures... and my floors weren't designed to handle his bladder.
I knew getting him to go outside would be a challenge. His adorable ears get cold so easily, which isn't great since Bat Ears are actually designed to help dogs cool down their body temperatures.
So, on a whim, I invented the Original BatHat.
Not only did he agree to go outside in 10°F weather, he stayed out long enough to do everything he needed to do. Like this Polar Vortex thing wasn't such a big deal.
I posted it to my Etsy Shop and Instagram following, and people loved it. I started getting orders. So, I developed a second style (BatHat Sport), followed by two hoodies that incorporate the same special ear pockets. One hoodie for indoors, one for outdoors.
At first glance, I thought it was silly and adorable, but then I realized he didn't mind it. And it provided protection around the head and neck that most dog coats don't have.
For all these reasons, Snorf Industries is committed to making products that are (fun)ctional. Technical, purposeful, and premium in their design, but also adorable, fun and full of personality. Just like the dogs who wear them.
To get our first production run rolling, we just want to fund each and every item that gets made. This is why we're offering our hoodies for a significant discount - based on our current pricing schedule on Etsy.
We also designed some great T-shirts for those of you who may not own a dog, love our logo, or just are a fan of what we're doing. The "Buhi Fever" design is an anime-style version of our logo, with the Japanese word "Buhi" as part of the design. (Buhi is the Japanese nickname for Frenchies, the literal translation being "oink"). All shirts will be screen printed on cozy American Apparel tees and will be available in Adult, Women's, and Kids sizes. Expect to see these ship in May or June.
Shop early! While pieces will all be sold below the regular price, the lowest prices will be offered in limited quantities and may go fast!
If you've spent time on Kickstarter before, you may have seen "Add-Ons" as an option. Basically, the following chart will allow you to add on an item to your bundle... in case you wanted just one more hat, t-shirt, or hoodie.
CHOOSING SIZES AND COLORS
The way most fashion Kickstarters work is like this: first you pledge to buy an item. Then, once we hit our goal, we send out surveys (order forms) to all the pledgers. That's when you get a chance to indicate which size and color you'd like to have.
We will have some new hat sizes, however! Check it out:
As for colors, we would LOVE to produce our product line in lots of colors. However, a first production run ain't cheap! So we had to be very selective -- choosing from the most popular colors as our "initial color" offerings. HOWEVER ... keep reading after the following infographic...
This chart will be updated as we hit our crowdfunding goals. Should we be lucky enough to exceed our actual goal amount, we'll "unlock" new colors as we hit certain financial markers.
For instance, adding a second color for the Original Hoodies will cost us almost $6,000 more. So, if you are ok with red, but would LOVE a pink hoodie -- be sure to tell your friends to make pledges too! The more people who pledge, the more colors everyone will have to choose from. (Don't wait around to just see what happens! Active participation is key!)
Shopping this Kickstarter isn't just about getting a great product. You're helping support the future of a company... a socially-responsible company devoted to extraordinary quality, attentive customer service, and giving back to rescue charities. Because we believe every dog deserves the feeling of being warm, snuggly, and truly loved.
Risks and challenges
I have an incredible production director who will be leading the charge on our manufacturing efforts. The woman (and fellow dog-lover) who will be overseeing the production of these items has almost 20 years experience in the apparel industry. She's handled design, sourcing and production management for some of the world's largest mass market labels. Much of the apparel she oversees is detail-oriented, high quality athletic apparel - a great match for what we're trying to produce. We didn't want to make junk for dogs -- Snorf Industries is all about making things at the highest level of quality.
We will keep backers notified all along the way. We'll share photos and updates, and let you know how things are going.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
