We are a team of like-minded media and game makers wondering how to invent the future of agriculture by asking ourselves the question:
If we divide all agricultural land on Earth among all human beings, each of us would have less than 0.7 hectares, the size of a soccer field. Can we survive well of this amount of land? and if - for how long?
Hectarium is a 2D mobile game project where you are given the mission to survive and improve your food consumption by living off exactly your share of global farmland. All the statistics and farmer stories feeding the gameplay are based on validated research and real-life encounters and feedback in the field.
Hectarium is the name we give to our simulated share of land in the game composed of four farms in four different countries, managed and harvested by 4 distinct farmers. By interacting with the farmers, you can decide on the products you consume seasonally; you manage your weekly food budget and learn from the challenges your farmers have to face harvesting your food. You have to find strategies on how to redistribute land use to improve and sustain your own health. But then, unexpected market and environmental events and fluctuations force you and your farmers to reallocate resources and money or adjust priorities. If you manage to reduce your greenhouse gas emission and your water consumption, you will be rewarded with an increase in your weekly money allowance at the end of each season.
Players will learn that the main challenge is to replace as much of their animal protein for vegetable protein and gradually create more space for forest and wildlife to flourish. But it won’t be easy! Your health can degrade quickly and unexpected events like draughts and market fluctuations will force you to make difficult compromises.
We are making a unique game that is fun and meaningful at the same time. Easy to understand but difficult to fully succeed. A game based in today’s scary reality that offers the possibility to visualize a better future.
THE WEB SERIES (PREQUEL TO THE GAME):
For the research, Diego Briceño and his collaborators in Canada decided to produce a web-series that is currently available on facebook and youtube. Each episode tells the story of a farmer and their advice on how best to live off less than a hectare of land. Here is the intro to the first season:
STATUS OF THE GAME:
For the last ten month our team of game designers, artists and developers is working hard developing the style, gameplay and general premise of the game. It's been a tight collaboration between colleagues in Canada and Germany with the end objective of sharing the experience and knowledge with the entire world.
Now, we need to finalize all the elements we’ve developed so far to create a fully functional prototype. Meaning, a testable game that will allow us to validate our concept and convince new partners and investors to finance the full version of this game. And we are almost there!
Now we need your donations to finish it and in exchange, we will invite you to be part of our team. You will have exclusive access to the prototype and we’ll keep you in the loop until the final game comes to light. Your feedback will be more than welcome and essential for all future improvement!
So please be aware that if this campaign ends up successful (by you supporting it) we still have to go a long way until HECTARIUM will be finished. But with your help and energy we can lift this fantastic project off the ground and make it fly.
All the money we are soliciting will go to pay the programming team so they can finish coding and integrating the final game mechanics and the graphic designer and artist to create the characters and pages which that are still missing.
KEEPING YOU POSTED:
Since mid 2018, we have been active posting news and relevant information concerning sustainable food and agriculture through our different social media channels. We invite you to subscribe, follow, like and recommend any (or all) of our feeds:
Our goal is to keep sharing media that speaks to issues and stories we can all relate to bringing the environment to the centre of our everyday conversations.

THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY:
All the data and measuring methods used in the game have been shared and validated with our current research partners: the David Suzuki Foundation (Canada) , Earth Economics (USA) and 2000m2 Project (Germany). In the future, we intend to continue perfecting and updating out data and story base to feed Hectarium with scientific and reality-based knowledge.
Risks and challenges
We hope to finish the first prototype by the end of July 2019. Since nearly everyone involved is working for very little money, it might take a little longer. Please note that the prototype itself is still no guarantee that the finished version HECTARIUM will eventually see the day of light. We will still need it to approach potential partners and funders to raise the money required to produce the final game. Still, we hope to release a first beta version in October 2020.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
