GOOD MORNING! AND WHAT A MORNING! With hundreds of people pushing for us we reached our 20k goal! WE DID IT!
We couldn't have done it without the many, many people, some we've never met, working hard day and night to make this a reality. All I can say is a teary -
Thank you, thank you! :')
With just hours left we are going to try for a new exciting goal:
NEW GOAL! 28k for a BSC WALK BEHIND TRACTOR:
This will allow us to have competitive, educational markets fields in 2013!
Imagine the rows of beautiful veggies we can produce if we moved beyond out 19th century pick axe technology here at Coleraine!
That's right farm cat Po! You are going to love romping in the new fields - they'll be brimming with mice!
"I want to revitalize my family farm by creating an educational homestead and school for the arts; with a focus on sustainability."
The Coleraine Farm School, in Brookfield, New Hampshire, will be a place where a person with a curious mind and the will to learn can study things ranging from bio-dynamic farming,
- to sculpture,
- to building a cob Earth Oven.
And where the seasoned professional can utilize our artist residency programs to craft and realize their masterpiece.
I plan to use my background experience, as well as the help of my friends to build and cultivate this dream.
We are lucky to have a farm with the essential elements to start a business and a school; a huge antiquated barn, a beautiful farm house, fields with healthy soil, a diverse woodlot, plentiful water sources, and amazingly friendly and knowledgeable neighbors.
But some important parts of the infrastructure required to host and maintain educational programming and a successful market farm are aging and in disrepair. We’d would love to start classes this fall. But there is still a lot of work to be done.
First, we need to restore the electrical wiring in the barn.
Beyond its normal farm uses (currently 350 garlic plants are hanging, drying among stacks of onions) we will be building a woodworking studio, a stage and a dance floor. Artists and dancers are already eagerly awaiting the creation of a theater and workshop.
Currently there is no electricity in this beautifully ancient post-and-beam barn, one of the few remaining in the area. Rewiring it will cost us $4400. And it's well worth it!
Next, we need to replace the foundation on the old wood shop and convert it into artist residency. The illustrious Russ Hall and the indefatigable carpenter Kara Blossom (featured here) are working with myself to draw up plans to raise the structure and remove and replace the old rotting foundation of an otherwise well intact out building.
We envision a four-season, large, cozy, sunny, work studio and live-in quarters with wood cook stove for the artists in our residency program. $3975 will be needed to restore the foundation on the wood shop.
It’ll take $2000 to reline the chimney in the house. This is big. In one giant leap this will take the farm house off oil dependence for winter heating and restore the farm's more sustainable dependance on wood cut from our own wood lot.
And we’ve budgeted $7800 to continue the work in our fields and to build a four season greenhouse so we can have farming classes year round.
Each one of these projects will be an educational opportunity at Coleraine, with students coming to learn hands-on, alongside professional craftspeople!
We're going to need $20,000 to get this done and we're offering some amazing rewards!
A hand crafted cutting board made of wood from our trees,
