Hi folks, James Reams here, from James Reams & The Barnstormers - a nationally-known bluegrass band and unofficial bluegrass ambassadors! I sincerely want to thank each of the Kickstarter supporters over the years that have contributed to the success of the DVD documentary “Making Music with Pioneers of Bluegrass” and my latest album, “Rhyme & Season.” The DVD continues to sell well and the new album has received high praise from well-known reviewers and music lovers.
The success of these projects has led to an interesting opportunity. I was approached recently MediaSmith, a Phoenix-based company that I had worked with previously, about being the subject of a documentary. I was initially surprised by the request. But they convinced me that I do have a story to tell – a survivor’s tale from the perspective of a long time, though perhaps not big time, bluegrass band leader.
As I get ready to celebrate 25 years as a band leader, I thought why not?! You don’t have to be a big name to have a story to tell. And maybe my story will encourage someone else who is struggling to keep his or her head above water in the music industry or any creative endeavor.
Inspired by that metaphor, MediaSmith suggested a working title for the film that captures the essence of what it means to be a musician. “Like a Flowing River: A Bluegrass Passage” will relate the twists and turns – as well as the career threatening log jams – that had to be overcome in order for me to make it to this 25th anniversary. It's as much a story about hope as it is about being a musician.
Music is as much a part of me as the blood that flows through my veins. And it has carried me through some really tough times in my life. I’ve learned that if you fight against the current, you’ll drown. So, my philosophy has become go with the flow and see where the river takes you!
MediaSmith normally handles photography, videos and short films. This is their first attempt at a feature-length film and, quite frankly, they need our help in order to get this film finished and into the hands of the public. They asked me to make this appeal on their behalf since I've been successful with Kickstarter campaigns in the past. I realize that I'm asking you to take a leap of faith and believe in these filmmakers as I do. I hope I can count on you to “jump in the river!” and help get this story told.
BONUS: All contributors will be listed in the film’s credits! Those who contribute at the $500 level will receive a special acknowledgement!
Risks and challenges
Work on the project has already begun. Interviews have been scheduled, artwork is being prepared, licensing has been acquired, film crews and sound technicians have been hired, and portions of the film have been completed. However, available funds will be exhausted by the time filming and editing are finished. This modest Kickstarter fund will provide the additional capital needed to finalize production and distribute the film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
