About this project
In November 2013, Nightingale Publishing - with your help - was able to fund the art for "Spooks! Welcome to the Great Beyond". Spooks! WTTGB came to me (Nathan) after my grandfather had passed. I had dreamed that we were in his home, sitting together on his couch. I asked him "What is it like?" - referring to being dead - "Nathan," he said to me in that calm matter-of-fact way that he did, "It's not what we thought."
Now after its success, I'd love to appeal to your interest and generosity again to help fund "The Mortal Intrusion" an expansion featuring the "Land of the Living". As before, your funds will help us pay for the art, editing and final publication. The $3500 goal is the bare minimum it'll take to get the art we need. The more funds we can raise the more impressive the imagery becomes.
"The Mortal Intrusion" is not a stand-alone product - I mean, why would you want it to be? You play from 1 of 7 different character types that trail blaze their way into legend and glory but they will one day have to die. Call it a bad roll, call it pre-destiny or maybe your storyteller is just a hater. Whatever the case, your character is not lost to oblivion but re-emerges in the Great Beyond with all their Mortal powers at the dispense of their undead-selves and the story continues. For thousands of years, the dead have invaded the living. Now, the tables have flipped. Through ancient sorcery and advents in technology, portals have been constructed to allow the Living to visit the Dead. The unliving embodiment of Osiris - Hatshepsut - having waged war on those who dared invade her realm has struck a shaky accord that allows limited passage for the living into the realm of the dead. What secrets and magics can be plundered from the afterlife and brought back to the world of mortals? No matter the intention, such means cannot be kept secret forever and already there are whispers among secret societies, shadow agencies, religions organizations and cults of a way to transgress beyond the veil. Perhaps hidden in the shroud of the afterlife are the very secrets to immortality or a weapon that will bring them to prominence. A war of mortals has begun and the player characters will find themselves in the middle of it.
The Spooks! system runs off d6s with advances in skills adding to a pool of dice that are rolled against others or against a preset challenge rating. Players also use a poker deck, called the "Spell Deck" in the Core-rules, or "Synergy Deck" for non-magic users in the Mortal Intrusion. These cards can be used to boost rolls, cast spells or take on the challenge of the optional wound system.
Players can choose from 1 of 7 different Divergents or "character archetypes" to play. Each offers its own unique talents and style of play.
Be it through perdition, visions or a visit from a messenger of faith, the character has become one of the Blessed. A dedicated few who have been instilled with the divine essence of their faith that drives them to seek out enemies of their religion and destroy the abominations that have crawled out from the darkness that once bound them. Whether they are Christian, Taoists, Druids, Hindus, Muslim, Sikhs or Scientologists the blessed do what they must to drive back the night and spread the message of the one true word. They are warriors, scholars, diplomats and kings. While exemplars represent the best of humanity, the blessed are the best of a philosophical, religious and pure personification of the human soul backed by the divine.
Some would go and claim that being called common is as much of an insult as neglecting to welcome new neighbors with your infamous apple pie. While the common person may fawn over a certain subject or get good grades coming out of college, most aspire towards a successful career, raising a family, gaining grand-children and eventually retire without experiencing a sliver of danger. The common folk is not to be discredited, they are the backbone of society and in large numbers can be exceptionally terrifying. What makes them unique is their adaptability, being able to mold to different circumstances and become aspiring members of leading organizations.
Darwin was right about natural selection. The human mind has been evolving for centuries and from time to time someone with a spark of ability rises from the primordial ooze that is the world’s population. Someway, somehow through proper breeding and external stimuli the individual’s brain unlocked, releasing with it devastating powers such as the ability to read thoughts, lift objects with their mind, start fires with a blink and even predict future events. The power these individuals wield is ghastly and with it stems fears of individual freedom and risk to the status quo.
Adventurers, Scientists, Olympians, Leaders, Inventors; from the greatest minds to the most hardened of athlete, the exemplar is the result of strong breeding and proper honing of one’s skills. From Einstein to Mozart, Boudicca to Christina Rossetti, the exemplar excels at nearly everything they do and rise to become masters of their field. When an exemplar takes the field, it does not take long for people to notice. Those who recognize them for who they are strive to ensure they are properly funded so that they have a chance at changing the world.
Faekin are the offspring between a faerie and a mortal being. More times than not the faerie parent, for fear of the child’s safety, will take them from their mortal parent and sequester them in the faerie realm. There have been several stories of abduction, seduction and also of babies being replaced in their cribs with changelings. While this is the general tradition, the faerie parent may decide to leave the child behind and allow the mortal parent to raise the child. Whether the faerie parent returns to check in on the child from time to time is really up to that individual’s dedication and philosophical leans in concerns with the Seelie or Unseelie courts. Faekin exhibit talents specific to their genealogy, allowing players to choose from over 20 lineages, including a noble lineage.
The magi herald from ages past. Some called them sorcerers, wizards or even witches, yet regardless of the intolerance the world has shown them over the centuries they have risen up time and time again to protect mankind from things both supernatural and otherworldly. The magi are born as conduits for the magical energies that collect around artifacts of power. These mystical relics are then channeled through their spirit and are made manifest. The powers that the magi hold bends the laws of physics and reality, bringing forth surreal effects that some only dream of.
Legend has it that magi of old gave up their powers in exchange for the ability to transform into beasts. Others claim that the first zoonthrope was punished by the divine for a crime so heinous that the curse would pass by blood. However it all began the event has left behind a new race of humans able to take on the forms of animals – shapeshifters who are ruled by the moon and the instinctual behavior of the beasts within. Wolves, bears, cats, foxes, birds, rodents, reptiles and fish all manner of different animals that lurk within the soul of a zoonthrope. Each zoonthrope has its own nature, its own talents and agenda. When the zoonthrope shapeshifts their entire body takes on characteristics of their chosen animal such as fur, feathers, ears, teeth and even tails. Some work together while others fight for hunting grounds and other territories. Often the zoonthrope will form small communities such as packs, clans or tribes on top of the regular human communities that they’ve grown to be part of. Many zoonthropes find themselves alone in the world, unsure of who or what they are, and are forced to control the animal within or succumb to being hunted down as monsters.
The Mortal Intrusion introduces a dynamic skill progression RPG style tailored to fit a improvised storytelling method or for prepared adventures.

Details equipment of the 1920s and beyond; including weapons, armors, explosives, general items and vehicles.
Carries on the tradition of obituaries, those NPCs specific to the setting.

Looking smooth there backers! This tier unlocks a free mini-adventure written by Nathan Maher exclusive to Kickstarter backers for the 1st year to be released for FREE to the public afterwards. This will release with the game. A mini-adventure example can be downloaded at drivethrurpg.com. This also includes 1 digital wallpaper by Tobias White. Plus we'll add 5 more denizens to our originally anticipated 15 in the Mortal Intrusion. This will also fund the artwork for the Relic Deck. Everyone who donated $10.00 or more will be able to order the Relic Deck at manufactures when the book is available (Approximately 1-2 dollars, not including shipping).
Faeries beware! This stretch goal provides a free digital copy of "Dead Living Magazine" issue 2 for everyone who donated $10 or more, themed to Ada Lovelace. This will release with the game. This also adds 5 additional magic items to the Mortal Intrusion from the original anticipated 15.
Bane of vampires and zoonthropes alike, this stretch goal opens up a new mini-adventure also exclusive to Kickstarter backers for a period of 1 year and then FREE to the public afterwards. This will release 2 months after the game, but we hope to have it done sooner than that - time permits. 5 additional vehicles prominent from the 1920s and above will be added to the originally anticipated 10.
There are presently 7 divergents and now there will be 8. Welcome the Nephilim, the off-spring of fallen angels and the daughers of man. These individuals exhibit powers of corruption and draw from the Hellfire Lands - making them a formidable foe. This will add to the present story, open additional equipment, magical items and denizens related to the Nephilim.
If we get this far, more stretch goals will be created!

Health Pack I unlocked. An experimental injector that delivers a variety of medicine during combat scenarios. This is a field agent's best friend. Without this, you'd better get comfortable with bandages. This will be added to the equipment chapter.
Gangster Weapon Pack unlocked. The sawed-off shotgun, the Browning automatic rifle, FN 1905 Vest Pocket Colt, the Colt M1911 .45 ACP and the infamous Tommy Gun will make it into the equipment chapter.
The 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 Jonckheere Coup unlocked and added to the vehicle list. Drive around in style during your adventures.
The 1917 Sopwith Camel (Snoopy's Plane) unlocked and added to the vehicle list.
The 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder nicknamed "Little Bastard" that killed James Dean will be unlocked and added to the Cursed Artifacts section of the book.

A key battle took place between the Mortals and Spooks that lead up to the Spirit Accord. There was a single hero/heroine that made it all happen, so what did he or she look like, what were their key personality traits and were they spook or mortal? You could fill in the blanks and have a portrait placed inside the book if the Kickstarter is successful. All you have to do to be eligible is to goto our facebook.com/spooksrpg or google+ page, like the page, like only 1 side, either the mortals or the spooks image, and share it with your friends. Check out the rules when you get a chance!
1) To enter the contest you must have “liked” our official Spooks Welcome to the Great beyond Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/spooksrpg and “liked” either the “Vote Spooks” or the “Vote Mortals” photo. Voting for both sides or not voting for the page is grounds for disqualification.
2) To win the contest whatever “Vote for” photo gets the most likes will be the winning side. From the list of names from the “likes” on that winning photo we will randomly draw all eligible one winner.
3)The contest will starts today 2/12/2015 and ends on Saturday 3/21/2015.
4) The Mortal Intrusion Kickstarter must be successfully funded in order for you to reap the benefits. If the Mortal Intrusion fails in being funded, the contest fails and no benefits will be reaped.

Risks and challenges
I'm not stranger to writing books and meeting deadlines. So far I've written 2 fiction books, 2 RPGs, and now the Mortal Intrusion. I've learned a lot since the original kickstarter and how to manage this scale of a project even better than before. We've taken additional steps to ensure that the book you receive will be top notch quality by creating a three-tier editing process and also hiring a 3rd-party editor. The last Kickstarter that funded "Spooks! Welcome to the Great Beyond" was right on target for funding and - while we would have liked more artwork - we worked within the numbers and produced a beautiful product.
Tobias White was easily able to mass produce images and did so with dedication, quality and passion. Since this is a co-authorship, we've kept in constant communication with one another, despite the distance, and if one of us is unable to fulfill their side of the writing, then the other on is contracted to finish it.
As in most cases, no one can predict illness, financial loss or death, but I'd like to reassure everyone that we'll keep you in constant communication so you know where we are and what we are doing and when you can expect to see the finished products. One way or another this book will be finished and we prefer to finish before the deadline and not after.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
