Operator (Short Film)

£7,050

144

Hello. Thank you for visiting our page!

We are Caroline and Rebecca, a pair of filmmakers based in London. Operator is a short film, starring Kate Dickie (Prometheus, Game of Thrones, Red Road) and Vicky McClure (This Is England, Line of Duty). We will be filming over 2 days in London, and we need to raise at least £6,500 to help cover the costs of production and post-production. We've detailed in the section below exactly where this money will go.

We can’t make this film without your help, so we would love you to read on for more details. Thanks!

Please email us at operatorshort@gmail.com if you have any questions, and follow us on twitter for updates @operatorshort

Synopsis

An Emergency Services Operator in a Fire Control Room has just started a long night shift when she picks up a call from a desperate young mother. An hour previously, Gemma had fallen asleep in front of the television and has now woken to find the room full of smoke. Her three year old son is asleep upstairs. Flames have started to creep down the stairs that Gemma must use in order to reach her son. The operator’s guidance is all that Gemma can rely on to help her survive.

Why we want to tell this story

The film is based on a real 999 call. The recording is intensely frightening, and we were immediately struck by the powerful drama of the story. Our research has shown us again and again what a difficult job the Emergency Services operators do, and we wanted to create a script to reflect this. This is the story of two women, whose lives connect over extraordinary circumstances during a seven-minute phone call.

What makes it special?

The potential for dramatic tension with this story is huge. We are going to keep the camera on the operator throughout the film. We will never actually see Gemma. This will give our audience full access into the operator’s point of view, and they will experience the same tension, frustration and fear that the operator feels.

Who’s on board?

Cast

Kate Dickie – OPERATOR

Kate is probably best known for playing Lysa Arryn in GAME OF THRONES. Kate’s film credits include PROMETHEUS, FILTH, FOR THOSE IN PERIL and RED ROAD for which she won numerous awards including Best Actress at both BIFA and BAFTA Scotland in 2006. Her television credits include DIVEGARROW’S LAW and FIVE DAUGHTERS.

Vicky McClure – GEMMA

Vicky is perhaps best known for playing Lol in THIS IS ENGLAND and the TV series THIS IS ENGLAND '86 and THIS IS ENGLAND '88 that followed. In 2011 she won Best Actress at the BAFTA Television Awards for her role as Lol. Vicky’s other television credits include BROADCHURCH, TRUE LOVE and LINE OF DUTY. Her film credits include FILTH & WISDOM, ANNA KARENINA and SVENGALI.

Crew

Rebecca Morgan – Producer

Rebecca hails from sunny Edinburgh, and has wanted to be a filmmaker ever since taking her first drama class at the age of 13. Now living in London, Rebecca works full time on a broad range of film and television productions. She believes that the medium of film is the best way to tell a story, and she intends to tell stories in this way for the rest of her life. She loves to go running to relieve stress...so is expecting to be able to complete a marathon after making this film!

Caroline Bartleet – Writer/Director

Caroline trained as an actress and occasionally gets the odd job playing police women and bank clerks. Caroline has worked for various film production companies in a range of different roles and has made two short films that she is very proud of. Like Rebecca, Caroline loves a great story and believes this is the best she’s worked on yet. She is a cheese fanatic who hopes one day to start her own cheese business. She’s got books on cheese and everything. While Rebecca runs, Caroline eats cheese. She finds it more relaxing.

Jonah Mayfield - Associate Producer

If it was physically possible to live solely on films and TV, Jonah would. Instead human beings also require food, fluids and sleep so he commits almost every second of his 'free time' to watching, writing and making films. When he’s not attending a fancy press screening for his film review website, he is working full time at a film production company.

***NEW UPDATE***

We are delighted to introduce our sound recordist, Mitch Low. Mitch is a Scot with amazing hair. He has worked on loads of great films including LONDON TO BRIGHTON, THE COTTAGE, ADULTHOOD, HARRY POTTER, WORLD WAR Z and most recently FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.

***NEW UPDATE***

We have 2 new people to add to our team in the form of Production Designer, Isobel Dunhill and Composer, Navid Ashgari.

Isobel studied Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art before completing a Masters in Production Design at the National Film & Television School. She graduated earlier this year and is currently working on PAN.

Navid has the best dance moves this side of the English Channel. He’ll get them out at the wrap party. Navid has worked on various short films and most recently completed work on MURDERED BY MY BOYFRIEND for BBC3.

Why do we need £6,500?

This isn’t a simple shoot and we have a very ambitious task ahead of us. We’re going to try and pull in favours where we can, but we also believe in paying for things wherever possible!

The thing that will eat into our budget the most is our sound design. We potentially need two sound recordists on set, as we are recording the sound live in two rooms, so the actors can work off each other. We then need a sound designer to create our soundscape of the burning building from scratch, as well as a composer to create our soundtrack. We really want to make sure we get the best people on board, as well as spending enough time on it, and all this will cost money.

The rest of the money will go towards paying for a location over the two shoot days, as well as kit hire costs, costume and set design. We also need a graphic designer to put together realistic computer screen graphics for us – so the operator’s screen will look as realistic as possible.

We also need insurance, as well as some spare money to feed everyone!

We really need your help because if we raise any less than our target, we won’t get any of it! Thanks for taking the time to read about our project - please help us spread the word!

Risks and challenges

We have a very experienced team in place, however there are always unknowns in filmmaking. Once our project is fully funded, we will still push to raise some more money, to cover any contingency we may have.

We are confident that together with our experience, and our contacts in the industry, we will be able to overcome any obstacles that get in our way.
