About this project

Help getting my german gay romance novel 'Der Liebreiz einer Hyazinthe' translated so that english speaking readers too can get lost with two unlike men in my fictional city - Ascot.

Horse's hooves are hitting the cobbles in a steady beat, the sound of rattling carriage wheels fills the alleyways of the city. Snowflakes dancing wildly in the lantern's flickering lights. The townsfolk is rushing by only to immediately disappear again in the shadows. You're eyeing those that approach you suspiciously, because in Ascot you never know who to trust. The people here regardless of which quarter they are coming from, are cold as winter itself. The only redeeming thing you could say about them is that they don't care about who you love. They don't discriminate, but show their dismissive attitude to everyone equally. The frigidity of the citizens, however, is not your biggest problem, when you get in the way of the notorious secret society, that keeps even the rulers of Ascot like puppets on their strings. So stay away from suspicious people and, of course, the poor quarter. Just do it like the rest of the residents: don't trust anyone. Well, all right! Welcome to the city of Ascot!

Following a public humiliation, Hyacinth Black is on the verge of being beaten to death by his father. Of all people, the man who is commonly referred to as ‘Your Hideousness’ comes to his defence; but his intervention has a price. Hyacinth must marry his rescuer.

Since the murder of his brother, Gavrila Ardenovic has been on the trail of a secret society, but in the city where he is only mocked, he has few allies. Therefore he keeps his distance from others and is used to suppressing any hint of emotion.

Will lies and intrigues gain the upper hand or can Hyacinth succeed in battling the shadows of the past and break through his husband’s cold-hearted façade?

My characters are never perfect, just the opposite. They aren't attractive, they have enormous flaws they have to deal with and very often a dismal past. But they aren't tortured heroes because they are no heroes at all. That's exactly what makes them so special according to my readers. When my protagonists finally meet their counterparts they most of the time have to make compromises to find happiness, but they also grow from their experiences. Simply said, they're human.

Victorian Gay Romance novels usually leave me with a tinge of sadness. Even if the story is ever so romantic and touching I can only guess how it must feel having to hide your emotions. I hate it, how the protagonists have to fear for their lives just because they fell in love with somebody. And even if they manage to overcome all their personal conflicts and are devoted to one another, there still remains this fear and secretiveness that gives me heartache. To avoid this I wanted to create a world where love is generally accepted no matter who is affected by it. I didn't want to dismiss the ugly reality altogether, so there are homophobic people and countries where homosexuality is condemned and even punishable by death. But the greater part of my world provides a place where two men and two women are able to freely show their love to each other. It's the kind of world I want to live in – if you disregard all the other violence and brutality in Ascot, of course.

The reviews from german readers translated into english:

"First of all I have to praise the author's captivating and very emotive writing style, that I liked incredibly well right from the first page. Tharah Meester understands how to put strong emotions to paper und bestow upon her characters the necessary depth."

Winterlandschaft on amazon.de

"I enjoyed it very much to observe Hyacinth's perspective on Gavrila. Because most of the time the beauty of a human being doesn't lie in outer appearances."

Anonym on amazon.de

"Great Characters! Great plot and just an INCREDIBLE writing style. I don't write reviews very often but this book just left me speechless."

Yulice on amazon.de

"The plotlines/arcs of suspense are crafted poetically! All thanks to the many details and the author's sense for the right moment. The hints, secrets, intrigues and insights piece by piece compose a picture the scope of which the reader only realizes in the end."

Kristinas Bücherwelt on amazon.de

"Georgette Heyer meets Gay Romance The book is in a wonderful way old-fashioned and still so modern that tears start welling up in my eyes at every paragraph."

stormy60 on lovelybooks.de

"Highly exciting! This story is not only exciting, no, it's also as compassionate as it is moving. You just worry and hope for a good ending."

Elvira Kilian on amazon.de

"Highly recommended! I have read nearly all of Tharah Meester's stories and am totally delighted by this one too."

I want to reach as many people as possible with my stories, so it seems like an obvious step to try to make a translation. I already found the perfect translator, who has a lot of experience in translating regency and other novels, but now I have to be able to pay for him too. As soon as the kickstarter is over (and successful) he can begin working. In the following months I will keep you up to date here with every relevant information. The completion of the roughly 600-page-long english novel will take about 4-5 months, which means that the book will be ready to get released around November this year. Once that is done, I will immediately send out the rewards. Those that don't require the book to be finished will, of course, be delivered as soon as July.

Again, if you want to take a look at my translator Dwight's work on my novel, then please enjoy this excerpt: http://www.tharahmeester.com/p/a-hyacinth-for-his-hideousness.html

How the money will be used: 4900€ for the translation of 130.000 words from german into english. The rest will be spend to produce and send all the rewards. Also we have to cover the Kickstarter fees.

Risks and challenges

My husband and I have a lot of experience in publishing in general and with managing the shipment of my books, so the risks from your point of view are as low as they can get. Needless to say you always have to account for the unexpected (sickness, delays etc.) but we worked out the schedule so that everything should go smoothly.
The biggest risk from my point of view is that the kickstarter campaign won't get funded, which would leave me very sad, but even worse it would deny all those people out there the opportunity to read my novels. Please prevent this from happening and help funding this project!
