About this project

We have titled our Kickstarter project, “OCEANS 911” and for very good reason. As we speak, the world’s oceans are in a full blown crisis and worse, we have very little idea of the extent of it and even how to define it or how widespread it is. We do know it is very serious and is growing. There are unexplained losses of coral reefs planet wide, there are increasing reports of dolphins and whales beaching themselves and dying, our food fish are loaded with heavy metals and nearly every hemispheric current are now clogged with huge circulating trash piles thousands of miles in diameter. The oceans are the planets circulatory system – the water is quite laterally the blood of our planet. Our generation has used our planet’s life’s blood for a garbage dump. Now we MUST do something now or face the loss of the world’s largest biome that is interconnected to all the others. If the ocean biome fails catastrophically, it will make the climate change crisis look tame in comparison.

How do we plan to do that? We will succeed by attacking the problem in a very unique and innovative way. Our Oceans 911 Team is about to establish the very first permanent human colony in the Atlantic Gulf Stream manned by scientists, engineers and even their families. That permanent colony will set up instruments to continuously monitor the health of the North Atlantic while 35,000 miles of ocean passes above our fixed research station.

In order to get there, we have developed an essential first research thrust called the Atlantica Expeditions I. Our Oceans 911 – Atlantica Expeditions team is composed of some of the most experienced undersea aquanauts on the world including the former Chief Scientist of the International Space Station and several world record holder aquanauts. On our team is also movie director and producer, James Cameron of Titanic and Avatar fame. The purpose of Atlantica I and the goal of our team is to complete the study of undersea habitation techniques, deployment of instruments for ocean analysis and training of crews that will be required to establish the Gulf Stream station. During our first Oceans 911 – Atlantica I mission we will set the world’s record in longest undersea habitation for an Aquanaut crew.

But the Oceans 911 – Atlantica I Expeditions is not just about science, engineering and ocean monitoring! While we are there, our world class team have all agreed wholeheartedly that it is also our job to invest our time in students all over the world. Hence 50% of our time there will be connecting with classrooms by telephone and video live from our underwater site to classrooms all over the earth. We are investing in the promise of a new generation to understand and will be and teaching them about the oceans and conservation and protection of this most critical of all the earth’s biological systems. We consider that mission to be of equal value to that of investing and understanding the biome into which we will be living permanently.

Why doesn’t it cost millions and millions of dollars? Because our experienced and world class explorers have all agreed to totally give up our salaries and work the project completely as volunteers. All of our people are giving up their time, talents and expertise to make this happen as quickly as possible because we are fully aware of the urgency of our task. When you look at our operations closely, with so much freely donated and given to the essential task we are facing, we have only a relatively small amount to go before launching Atlantica I on July 4, 2011 or as soon thereafter as the weather cooperates and our habitat is safe and ready for the mission. So as we thought about it carefully, we realized that this need not be a impediment, but instead a benefit.

By adding this Kickstarter component, we gain support from those of you, our internet-friends-to-be. Further, we decided that if we added this element, that every donor would become a part of this project in some way. Hence, if anyone contributes as little as $3.00 you will receive a certificate of Expedition Membership and a fully embroidered patch of our mission. ALL donors will also be included on our newsletter email list. And that is just the starting offer as you can read on this page. There are many opportunities from $3.00 up to $2,500 or more. If you pledge $2,500 or more, if you are open water SCUBA qualified, in good health and can pay for your travel to central Florida, you will qualify to join us underwater sometime during our mission for a personal tour and to assist us in one our scientific projects. Likewise, if you are a teacher and wish to get your class involved, if your class of students contributes $250 or more (car washes, bake sales, rummage sales, etc.), we will link up with your class before or during our undersea mission in 2011.

The contributions we collect here at Kickstarters will be used to complete the undersea habitats (New Worlds Explorer and Leviathan), outfit our support vessel, Seabase One and develop several pieces of key equipment essential to the mission. We invite you to read about these pieces on our website. EVERY contribution is completely tax deductible as well, since we are a IRS certified tax exempt research entity.

The Oceans 911 – Atlantica I Expeditions is not about huge salaries – it is about NO salaries. It is not about stupidly expensive government programs, travel budgets, consultant fees and wasteful multi-million dollar conference junkets that make every exploration program dreadfully wasteful money sinks. We are, however, ALL ABOUT the people of planet earth. We are all about giving of ourselves for something far greater than just us.

As you can see, on our logo is a photo of a young boy looking out into the vastness of the oceans. We feature him first and out front because, frankly, it is more about him than us. It’s all about our children and their promise to clean up what has been messed up do badly. These expeditions are truly all about them and about you, because with your support and caring we can all work together to make a difference. We CAN all gather our resources together, however small or however large, and turn the tide. The young boy must be able to look out across the largest, most delicate and most important of all the earth’s living systems and know that even at the very last moment, that we stood in the gap and made a difference so that he and his children could enjoy all those things offered by our astonishingly beautiful planet and all that we have always taken for granted.
