About

My background is as a graphic designer, art director, and founder of Kuraman Creative. However, my obsession as a mother is watching how kids learn, and employing the latest findings in cognitive science and psychology to help them enjoy learning.

As my children are going through school - and they have experienced school in many different environments - I have noticed that regardless of the school's approach, learning multiplication tables still comes down to both rote learning and employing number strategies in the classroom.

However, latest learnings show that kids understand the fastest and with more longevity if they also employ visual and spatial reasoning. And the two products in the classroom that are supposed to address that - don't.

This product allows students to play with acetate layers to explore the relationships between the times tables products themselves. By layering each times table story over the base grid, the kids can use the 'pictorial' element in Singapore Math's concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to see visually how times tables generate and interact. This is the element that is missing across the board in the classroom, and may explain the vast gulf between Australia, the U.S. and the U.K.'s results in the 2015 TIMSS survey, compared to Singapore, which constantly places in the top three.

Risks and challenges

Challenge: Printing on acetate (PET) layers at an A1 size.

Details: Local offset printers don't print on plastic layers large enough (A1) - they typically stop at 640 x 235mm. Digital printers don't run polypropylene sheets (the ink doesn't stick and the stock is too thick to run through the printer).

Potential Solution: Initially we conducted our own research for printing companies in China, but we found we couldn't guarantee their capabilities without flying to China to confirm (no gold Alibaba companies could fulfill our requirements). Henceforth we have used a trusted Kickstarter partner to source the manufacture in China of the paper, plastic, printing and hangers. These capabilities have been confirmed, and cost built into the production costs.

If further production is required beyond our Kickstarter target, we can use an Australian company for printing and manufacture - although this will need a high print run to make the printing costs economically viable. This company can use environmentally friendly polypropylene and low VOC-inks. This is our end goal for this product - an environmentally-sensitive product that uses cognitive science to help our children deepen their understanding of these necessary skills.
