About this project
Thanks for taking a look at our Kickstarter page. We need YOUR help to get it completed!
When the iPad was first released, Az was really excited - he could finally use this touch screen mobile device for CAD on the go! As an architect he is a bit of a nutter for CAD and instead of web surfing and checking emails he wanted this to be a productivity tool. Boy was he disappointed. Over a burger in East London we discussed what was wrong with all of the existing CAD applications for the iPad .... slow, frustrating, painful to draw accurately and intuitively, incomplete in features and many bordering on false advertising by even calling themselves CAD. We thought we could do better!
As you can see we have developed CADO™ way past proof of concept. There is a lot of work that goes on in the background that may not be immediately obvious but every detail takes time and effort to get right in terms of the design of the UI, methods and then the programming. But it takes this much effort to make a Killer App! If it didn't everyone would be doing it. We like to think we employ the Obsessive Compulsive method of development.. it goes something like this;
TEST 1. Does it work?
TEST 2. Is it simple and would we use it?
TEST 3. Can we be proud of it?
TEST 4. If either Test 1 - 3 is a NO, learn from it, try again, and go back to TEST 1.
Needless to say its all very clever stuff that allows you to draw the solar system at scale or a microchip in CADO™. We've discussed many of these things, like the design of the UI and the iterations we have been through on simple elements like the co-ordinate display (its there in top right corner)... Have a look at our blog page for more information / rants / observations and discussions during the development process.
If you really want to know more, check out the pledge where you can ask our programmer a question however we can't accept responsibility for your head exploding after the information download!
The bar graph above illustrates what is left to do. This will give you a pretty good idea as to what we will use the money raised for. Essentially there are 3 main areas of work for which we need your help;
1.Programme development – we will be completing the coding of the functions required to finish the App - Annotate, Layers and balance of Draw and Modify tools which we consider important to a CAD application. We will also need to complete server-side programming for the in-app subscriptions. Finally we will need to allocate resource to beta testing and debugging prior to launch.
2.Graphical User Interface development – to complement the new functions we will programme into the application, the UI will need to be developed to ensure the user experience is to same high standard and remains intuitive. We will need to create a guide to allow you to pick up the basics and get you drawing really quickly
3.Support functions – when we release the application it is our intention to have reliable guidance and support available. We will also have to devote some resource to responding to your technical questions and to continue developing CADO™ to meet your needs based on user feedback.
Yes, you have guessed it. If we are able to raise £100,000 we will ensure CADO™ has full DWG functionality. We appreciate this is a significant amount of money, however it is required to allow us to import and export all of the CADO™ drawing objects in DWG. This is a large piece of development work and will require allocated resource to complete.
For this we will also ensure we have the following;
- Revision clouds
Az is a qualified architect and has been using CAD in some form for about 17 years. 2D drafting, 3D modelling and rendering through to animation, he just loves all of the design capabilities CAD systems have to offer.
Vim is a chartered engineer and has been using more conventional CAD systems for approximately 15 years – primarily for 2D design, computer fluid dynamics and Solid Edge mechanical design.
Together we have experience of almost all aspects of CAD and understand from a user’s point of view what is useful and what is not. We have been able to make informed decisions about how the App should work and cut out the parts of 'conventional' CAD that would not be relevant to mobile drawing. It has also been refreshing to re-think CAD through a touch screen device lens. We were not shackled to legacy software or historic methods of thinking and doing, it was a clean slate for us!

Risks and challenges
We have been working on CADO™ for just over 2 years and have overcome many obstacles along the way. It would be naive to think there won't be more to come, however over the years we have developed a hardened resolve to make CADO™ a reality and not compromise quality along the way.
In the CADO™ team, we have a lead programmer. His ability to complete the application is without question - just look at what he has already done! What we do need is additional development support to facilitate development at a good rate and have the fully featured application ready for December 2014. Finding developers of this calibre can be difficult and this may delay the release of the full featured application. To help manage this risk we have already begun the process of finding this talent and we will remain in contact with all backers to keep them updated on our progress.
Another challenge may be that somewhere along the line when the market encumbents take us seriously they may try and scare us with the 'hey you copied that claim'. We can categorically state everything in this application has been developed and coded from the ground up.
Lastly, the final challenge is that another iOS platform format may become preferential to the iPad. Having just released the iPad Mini and iPad Air, we do not expect any great shakes in the next 6 to 12 months on the iOS side of things. We are in parallel keeping a very close eye on the Android market as we will be porting once the iOS version is completed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
