The light spike was created for location photographers and videographers by a long time photographer. If you have ever used lighting on location, or even a light modifier in the past your only solution was to carry a 25 lb sand bag, or two. While the sandbag generally did the job well, they are often heavy, cumbersome, and not the first thing you looked forward to packing with your gear. The LightSpike weighs a mere 12 oz. It goes into the ground easy enough and it is also easy to remove.
We will use the funding for building and buying the components, packaging, marketing and fullfillment of the product. We feel any photographer that uses a light stand outside will benefit from the LightSpike. We have finished testing our prototypes and are very close to the final product. We expect to have the product ready for shipping within 30 days of the close of the campaign. We hope to ship sooner but added the extra time for the "margin of error"
I don't have any photos of the first prototype but believe me it was pretty heavy and pretty crude. But the important thing is it worked great and led me to find quality components to keep on going with the project. While we will be shipping something very close the the last prototype- we will continue to try and improve the product and maybe find and suggest other applications.
Most photographers will tell you horror stories how they or their assistant stepped away from the light only to watch the stand come crashing down when a gust of wind came from nowhere. I can honestly say I have probably lost a few thousand dollars in broken equipment. Though not all from a gust of wind. If you are lucky it might only cost you a $20.00 umbrella. Often it will cost you more when your light gets damaged or a bulb gets broken. The light spike costs slightly more than the umbrella, but will save you countless dollars in accidents that never happened. The unit is so light, you will hardly notice the extra weight when packed in your kit for location work.
The Light Spike works with most every light stand, from the heavy duty “C Stands, or movie stands”, as well as the lighter collapsible stands. Just a caution though, the LightSpike works soo well that if you stand is too light it may bend somewhat under heavier winds. We have used to the LightSpike in very high winds, often exceeding 30 mph. We do advise you proceed with caution if you use it in these extremes. It might be a good idea to use two on opposite sides. Again be careful.
