The Challenge: We all love our pets and appreciate them being part of our family. Anyone who has ever lost a pet knows it can be a frightening and anxious experience. It is scary for both the pet and for their family. Time can be of the essence as the more they wander looking for their home the more lost they can become.
What Does It Mean To Be Pingable?
All of our contributors will receive a monthly update showing the progress of Ping A Pet. There will never be solicitations, only relevant information concerning our Kick Starter promises.
Our Rewards Make Great Gifts For Pet Lovers! The pet lifetime rewards are available only through our Kick Starter campaign, never to be offered again. Give a gift of security to friends and family with pets. A unique registration code will be sent for each reward, simply pass the code along (or use our website to print out a nice card) to your friends and family.
Ping A Pet: At Ping A Pet we are about building an important and useful product that is community based with free basic service. We utilize an open source computer vision library as our core technology. With this amazing technology we added our own overlay to obtain facial recognition, in this instance the face being that of your dog or cat. We do more than simply compare images. We train the computer with images of your pet. Using openCV as a foundation, there is a 20 stage program with training accuracy of .999 in contrast to tens of thousands of other pet photos.
The Technology: The premium training is much more than a simple image comparison calculated on the fly. Each pet recognition training takes hours of computational time. The application is qualified through a rigorous multi-stage process against tens of thousands of images. The end result is a strong identification matrix to recognize your pet! On average it takes three days to process and train the application to recognize a face. Obviously, we run parallel training on multiple servers with the computational time being substantial for unique setup.
The Community: The success of Ping a Pet does not depend on any specific technology advancement. We have proven methods to quickly identify your pets face. The success of the program is dependent on communication and tools and a caring community. As a team, this application forged by the members, will optimize Ping A Pet for both user friendliness and effectiveness. Once beta testing is finished and Ping A Pet is live, a complete broadcasting system to social media and local outlets will be launched to expedite the recovery of a lost pet.
How It Works:
The best part of Ping A Pet is that your dog or cat doesn't have to be reported lost for a good citizen to notify the pet owner. If your pet runs away without you knowing it, they can still be identified. A caring individual can take a picture of your pet and use the Ping A Pet service to obtain owner contact information as well as provide information on how to contact the person who found the pet.
Additionally when a family's pet is scanned for recognition at Ping A Pet, the owner will be notified that their pet was scanned and the two parties can contact each other.
Long Term Goals: As computational power and internet connectivity advances, we hope to include the ability to recognize the pet by a video feed. This has been requested for dog parks and other areas where several pets gather to socialize. This service would allow any pet registered at Ping A Pet the option to display their name, to be shown live in the video. Instantly all the owners know all the other pet's name at the park, just by videoing their face. Another area, close to the heart of the owner, is the use of this technology in science. Drones could monitor wildlife and endangered species in the future by video alone. This would be safer for the animals, scientist and environment. Of course, our goal is to provide it free to them.
The Budget: The budget goal for finishing the beta version and bringing the product live is at its bare minimum. This type of service requires a strong cloud computing solution with the ability to handle millions of members. The cloud services are state of the art, but are fairly expensive, especially in a startup period (Ping A Pet's cost starts at about $2000 per month and increases as membership increases). The budget also includes more programming, design and lots of testing. Finally, we must obtain legal advisory. All together we have set the lowest goal mark for seeing this project become a reality. Of course, to really do it comfortably it will take many more users than the initial goal. We would love to be able to place a full time person or a couple of part time people dedicated to Ping A Pet on staff. At present, we are working out of our homes, keeping the cost as minimal as possible without sacrificing the quality needed. Our project timeline and milestones are shown below.
We Need Your Help: One of the major helps in our launch and goal setting is you! We need beta testers. Those who don't mind taking pictures of their pet, registering them and once you receive notification their registration is complete, you test the ability of the system to recognize your pet (many times, and try to make it fail! failures are were we learn!). You will also play an important role in the look and feel, user friendliness and functionality of the service. You are the most important part of the success of our community and service.
Ping A Pet Service Matrix
Check out the rewards! Grab a T-Shirt and ask your neighbors if their pet is pingable! How awesome would it be to have a secure, accurate way to recognize a lost pet on the spot!? Join the community, spread the word and may we never have a lost pet again! All the rewards provide deep discount on our services: Some are extreme discounts, have limited quantities and only offered during our Kick Starter campaign.
All Rewards Provide Beta Tester Privileges: You will be part of the community of beta testers. This allows you to register your pet(s). During this time you will be able to have major input on the service, look and feel, needed improvements and suggestions. Of course, you will be able to test the system for recognizing your pet from a photo you upload. Beta testers are our most important asset for launching. You will tell us what is working for you and what is not working for you. Bottom line is you, the community, is the success factor. We plan for the basic service to be free, believing the standard and premium services provide enough to help those who cannot afford a full service. Be sure to notice the pet's Life Time Premium Membership Reward! The T-Shirt comes in your choice of Pink (as shown) or Black.
Founding Ping A Pet Angel: For any contribution of $250.00 or more, your pet will have their own founding Ping A Pet Angel profile page, a pet's Lifetime Premium Service and a Ping A Pet T-Shirt. You will be able to add pictures, description and even a video if you desire, to your pet's founding angel page. There are a limited number of spaces, honor your pet as a founding angel and help us make this service a reality!
Who is Behind Ping A Pet: Who are we and why do we think we will succeed? The founder, Rickey Austin PhD, is a Computational Scientist with over 30 years experience in the tech industry (LinkedIn Profile). Fifteen of those years as a CTO of a turn key internet solution company. There he help found a company's technology from white board to implementation. He has worked with DoD projects and currently is CEO of River Song Innovations Inc. Rick is a seasoned veteran in bringing ideas to life. He understands the challenges and needs to bring success to a concept. He is surrounded by other Computational Science and Engineering colleagues, graphical design artist, communication specialist and a great community of pet owners.
Rick, having worked many years providing service to the non-profit community, understands limited budgets. Often working with fewer client resources than the average for profit client. As such, often out of the box solutions and strategic relations were used to accomplish needs. This hands on approach and experience has brought Ping A Pet from concept to a beta technology. We started our proof of concept by identifying four leaf clovers in a live streaming video. (See the short homemade clip below or see the blog here discussing it). The carryover from finding a four leaf clover among other clovers provided key experience and technology to properly identify a pet from a picture. We now have many pets successfully identified among tens of thousands of pet images!
Behind the scene look at our research and development. A clover proof of concept. At about 3 seconds into the vdieo we apply our algorithm, the results were cause for celebration.
Thank you! Thank you for checking out our passion and hope. Any help, support or encouragement you can provide is extremely appreciated. Ask any questions and we will work to answer them quickly and as fully as we can.
Risks and challenges
The risk are low. The technology is currently working in beta form. The application is in the process of being transformed to a cloud based scale-able technology. The budget is low and maintainability of the service is at a relatively low cost (retail around $20 a year per pet, and once we hit a million pets, we will be able to cut the cost in half). If Ping A Pet was overwhelming successful in the first few months (50 thousand pets or more), we may need to spread the setup time for the pets to a few months. But only in the initial startup. We are excited to bring this service to everyone. There is a need and we have a strong passion for the pets and technology.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
