Note: This video shows pre-alpha gameplay and was run on our Development PC's on Unity3D play mode. The actual game will run on mobile devices.
In Crushing Darkness you will be able to see your cards come to life in any surface you like to play, be it a table, the floor, etc., through your smartphone/tablet to see the action behind the epic battle taking place on the table.
Here is where the digital part in digital Trading Card Game comes: cards will be stored on your device so you can carry them anywhere, but you'll also be able to trade them with anyone you like. To play it all you'll need is your device, marker and a friend. You'll even be able to print the marker at your own house at any size you like to.
So, what is Crushing Darkness?:
- The first digital Trading Card Game with Augmented Reality on mobile devices.
- Watch your cards come to life with your smartphone/tablet.
- Battle against your friends (face to face).
- Collect and trade cards with your friends.
- Carry the game anywhere through your device and marker.
- Don't have to buy a marker, just print it any size you want.
But how is Crushing Darkness any different from other TCG's?
Well, aside from the fact that you will see you cards battling, Crushing Darkness' playing system is a little bit different from traditional TCG's.
There are two kinds of games that our team loves: TCGs and RPGs, so many years ago, it occured to one of our team members, how awesome it would be to play a party battle where you used your deck to fuel your attacks/magic/items. So, starting from here, in Crushing Darkness you command a party of six creatures ready to battle, with two creatures active, battling against the opponent. Those six creatures are the only ones you have in your deck, and don't need to wait to draw them, they are there from the beggining. Just keep in mind you can't have a duplicate of any monster on your party.
Each creature possesses 6 attributes that define how strong a creature is:
- HP: How much damage a creature can sustain before being defeated.
- Attack: Increases the damage done by the attacks of the creature.
- Defense: Reduces the damage taken by the creature.
- Elemental: Increases damage when an attack has type advantage as well as reducing damage when receiving damage that has type advantage.
- Accuracy: The probability of your attack hitting the opponent.
- Evasion: The probability of evading an attack.
The cards that are in your deck will allow you to boost the power of your creatures or let them use their most powerful attacks. To attack, your creatures will need mana to execute their attacks.
A little Strategy
Nevertheless, you can't do just whatever you like with your cards. Each turn you will receive Stamina Points to act and most of your actions will use up those points. Drawing a card will use up 4 points (you can draw as many cards as you want, as long as you have stamina), entering your Battle Phase will use 4 points (you can only enter your Battle Phase once per turn), using a Manacard uses 3points (you can use as many mana as you want, as long as you have stamina). The Stamina cost forSupport cardsvary depending on the effect of the card.
So, at first you receive 11 Stamina points per turn and your Stamina consumption is:
- Enter Battle Phase, 4 points (only once per turn)
- Draw a card, 4 points
- Use a Mana Card, 3 points
- Use a Support card, varies per card
Stamina you don't use carries over to the next turn. Just remember, you can only have up to 15 stamina points, at the beginning of the game at least.
Finally, attacking or defending with your creatures will gain you eXperience Points (XP), which you will be able to use to level up your creatures and increase their power!
Ok, so that is the game, but, who is going to make it?
Authentic Illusions is a small studio dedicated to Artificial Intelligence in video games. We are mostly comprised of Ph.D. students in the area, with a dream of creating games that are more immersive through the use of Artificial Intelligence. One of those dreams is using Augmented Reality to create more engaging and entertaining games that, different from virtual reality, can truly merge our reality with the digital world to give players unique experiences.
We are currently being incubated at the Tecnológico de Monterrey Startup Incubator and they have helped us a lot with courses and advice to succeed with our Startup. Although the help and support they are giving us is invaluable (and actually highly priced for those not in the Incubation program), no actual money is being given to us.
Also, through the University (Tecnológico de Monterrey) we even have access to offer non-paid internships for the games we work in.
Up until now we have put up all our money to make this dream come true. And if the campaign succeeds, we are even going to keep putting money up front every month for the duration of the Development so we don't suck up the resources from the Kickstarter campaign.
Now, setting aside how much we are giving, why do we need your help?
Much of the team's power comes from the strong programming background we all posses. We have all the skills to build the backbone of Crushing Darkness. Nevertheless, we lack full time committed people in the art department.
The game needs more art and 3D models to truly shine! Although we own the rights to use the 3D models being used in the videos and the photos, so do other developers D:
That means maybe you can see those same characters in other games or media T_T. We want to create a true TCG experience for you. We want to take the Trading Card Games to their next step in evolution. And we want to make you happy.
But we cannot do that alone. Original Art costs. The models we are using cost a lot way more than we can keep affording!!! We need your help to finish the art of this awesome game.
You may ask, but didn't you just say that you can ask for interns to the university that's incubating you? Well, actually we can, but to ask for top quality work, commitment for a half time job for 6 months at least and offer no pay is something of a let down for any student. If we want to have interns for similar conditions, we need to pay them, and right now we just can't. All the money we put into it is used in operational costs as well as equipment.
So, you may wonder, if I join you in this adventure, how will the money be spent? Well, here is the answer:
As you may see, there are two big beasts there, operational costs and art improvement.
The first one refers to all the costs related to the simple fact of working on the game, since development will last 1 year once the campaign ends, it covers one year of expenses like software, extra equipment needed, etc.
Art improvement refers to hiring people in charge of the artwork of the cards. If you have played any TCG, you know card artwork is essential to it.
Next is the Server and Web services. All your cards' data needs to be stored somewhere so it's not bound only to your device. Using these services, we can backup your data so you never experience an unexpected loss because your smartphone broke or someone erased everything from your tablet.
The orange one refers to the expenses that need to be covered to market Crushing Darkness. If no one hears about the game, no one will buy it, and besides the fact that we would all be sad, there would be no future expansions of Crushing Darkness T_T.
Finally we have the costs of running the Kickstarter itself, which are low, but are still there.

Number of Decks and Booster packs
We have thought a lot about this project, and the amount we ask for the goal is the minimum to make Crushing Darkness a reality, but not with all the features we would want it to have. This is why we've set the following Stretch Goals:
Stretch Goals Explanation
$29,200 --> The art we have for the cards and the game user interface so far is good, but we can make it better by getting new equipment and hiring art employees.
$35,500 --> Upon reaching this goal we will include a practice mode in the game where you can learn how to play and we will also add 20 new cards to the Knights of the Dragon Order expansion set, this will be possible by hiring art and programming employees.
$44,800 --> 2 vs. 2 creatures is a good way of playing, but maybe you'd prefer to play 1 vs. 1 or 3 vs. 3 creatures, and by reaching this goal that will become an option in 1 vs. 1 person vs. person (pvp) battles. By this point we'll need more programmers and equipment.
$55,150 --> Sure, it is fun playing in the tablet or the smartphone, but it is also very fun playing on the computer with people across the world. By reaching this goal we will also make Crushing Darkness a PC game with which you will be able to play with people worldwide by using personal codes to contact others. To do this we'll need to get new equipment and possibly more employees in the art and programming departments.
$69,950 --> A Trading Card Game needs cards to trade, so we will add 50 new cards to the Knights of the Dragon Order expansion set. It will be important by this point to hire testers so the cards won't be overpowered and this can get to consume a lot of time.
$85,000 --> So far the 3D art we have has been bought out of other people, but we want our studio to create our own art, so we want to hire 3D art modelers and buy top notch equipment to modify the existing effects and art from the existing cards in the Knights of the Dragon Order expansion set.
$105,100 --> This will become an awesome implementation of Crushing Darkness by allowing 4 people to battle in Free For All battles and also, the introduction of Battleground cards. This will be achieved through new equipment and hiring of diverse employees.
$125,300 --> More programming implementations to spice up the game, we will introduce 3 pvp Free For All battles and also 2 vs. 2 pvp team battles, while also adding a matchmaking system for the PC game so you don't have to depend on acquiring codes.
$151,250 --> This is an important stretch because it will allow us to have enough resources to make an account unification system, that is, the account on your Android device will be the same as in the iOS device or Windows 8 device, as well as the PC game. Also, the introduction of ranked battles and guild system.
$202,400 --> With the resources gather up to this point we'll be able to release the Crushing Darkness collectible cards to play old-school style. The cards will be released in English and Spanish. The money will be spent on printing, translation and distribution services.
$262,800 --> The game as we think it should be. All the 3D models will be changed for completely original artwork, by hiring full time 3D modelers and acquiring top notch equipment.
If the project is finished
We have joined the kicking it forward community so, if the project is successful, after the game launches we will help back other kickstarter projects by donating part of the actual game revenue to their projects. It may be little, maybe a lot, that we don't know, what we know is that we are now honor bound to this cause.

Risks and challenges
As any other person on Earth, the main risk we have is that we die before completing the project, either by a lightning bolt or drowning in the tub. Other than that, we can assure you that even tough diseases won't keep us from working and researching, and we know about that: one of our team members even goes to hemodialysis three times a week and will stay up late with the rest of us to continue working. That's the kind of spirit we all have.
As for challenges we must face, the main one is to find very good quality artists that are capable of modeling and finish their work on time. We assure you we will look high and low to find them, maybe even hiring from overseas if necessary.
We are also conscious that there are many Trading Card Games out there, that is why are considering spending good amounts of money on marketing campaigns, so the game gets to be known by many.

We will target Windows(7, 8), iOS and Linux right off the bat!
We don't want to left behind anyone just because they don't have the right OS.
The game is running on PC's, on play mode in Unity3D, the engine in which we are making the game. Nevertheless the AR application as it is now can only run on Mobile devices. What this means is that the game cannot run as an executable, it can only run from our PC's in development mode.
So , in order to use AR on PC, we would have to spend some time tinkering with it, that's why it is a Stretch Goal and not a feature from the beggining.
