To empower kids to lead healthy, sustainable, and adventurous lives.
For the past few years, I have been traveling through the U.S., Canada, and Central America on a unicycle. I broke the world record for longest unicycle trip in Panama in 2014, and after returning the U.S. that year, began giving talks at elementary schools, as well as universities, about my adventures and the importance of healthful living.
Profits from Luno! will be invested into my journey, and will help get me to more schools along the way!
Why a Children's Book?
After having given a number of talks at elementary schools and seeing firsthand how excited kids get about my adventures, I decided to put it into illustrated book form. I'm also going to be an uncle (!!!!) some short weeks after this fundraiser ends, so I wanted to create a legacy and combine my talents into story form!
Yes, I illustrated the entire book with my feet, and have some very cool videos to prove it! Go to the Updates sections to see!
This just goes to show that anything is possible, and I believe that message will resonate strongly with kids both able and disabled.
What is Luno! About?
This illustrated children's book follows a young boy named Luno, who has decided he wants to ride to South America on one wheel. He's the sustainable adventurer, choosing to unicycle instead of drive or fly. He faces worry-warts and nay-sayers, who question him about his mode of transport, but continues undeterred. He rides through the snow and rain, and even crosses a swamp, all the while voicing his motto: "Onward!" He also reminds kids (and adults!) that "Anything is possible!"
The moral of his story is that adventure can be as far as South America or as close as your own backyard, and that it's essential for kids (and adults) to get outside and discover the world for themselves, and in the end, the importance of returning home to family!
The Project Budget:
Graphic Design: $400
Printing cost (for a minimum of 300 hardbacks): $3,500
Shipping Costs: $500
Kickstarter fees: $450
Any rewards that include the book itself will be happy to know that this will be an exclusive kickstarter edition. That means that when I take this book to print for a second run, you will be proud to own the first, and you will be able to proudly say you got this story off the ground!
As seen on:
As this campaign gets underway, I will be updating my audiences with "making of" video for each of the book's pages, and donors will get to see exclusive footage in addition to that!
Risks and challenges
I have run a few successful fundraising campaigns in the past for charity, and gear for my journey (on IndieGoGo.) I also have the expertise of having graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011 and having organized multiple shows during and afterward. This project will be a new and humbling challenge on a greater scale.
One challenge will be working with a certain publisher, printer, or even artist's printshop, depending on the final number of books needed.
Another challenge, that I am exited to tackle, is to make this whole process as sustainable as possible. I hope to source the book within North America, and have it printed on paper sourced from sustainable forests.
Yet another challenge is budget. While I am hoping to recover the costs of my own labor and creative process in the form of profit, my ultimate goal is creating a product people are happy with and proud of.
