What is Heroicon?
Heroicon is a tabletop gaming convention in Decatur, Illinois, May 15-17, 2015. It will feature board games, minis, RPGs, card games and more.
Heroicon will be held at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel in Decatur, Illinois. Decatur is right in the middle of the state, making it centrally located and an easy drive from cities such as Springfield, Champaign, Bloomington and Peoria. Additionally, Decatur is about 2.5 hours from three major metro areas: Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis.
The DCCH has a restaurant and sports bar on site, ample free parking, and a large indoor swimming pool.
Heroicon will be in Holiday Hall, a space of almost 15,000 square feet. We are sub-dividing the space to create more intimate, less noisy areas for gaming.
Heroicon will feature a variety of RPGs, miniature games, board games, card games and LARPs.
While our event list is not yet complete, here are some noteworthy highlights:
- A full slate of Pathfinder Society games.
- A full slate of Shadowrun RPG and Shadowrun Crossfire games.
- A large Magic: the Gathering Standard-Constructed tournament on Saturday and a Modern-Constructed tournament on Sunday. Both tournaments will have cash and prizes up for grabs. Friday night will feature Friday Night Magic.
Games Library & Open Gaming
Heroicon will have a games library where attendees can check out a game, grab a table, and play with friends. We will have a dedicated area for open gaming 24 hours a day during the convention. While we encourage everyone to sign up for some of the scheduled events, feel free to bring your own games and wrangle up some players in the Open Gaming area.
Heroicon isn't just about games--it's a socializing event! We will have two parties, one on Friday night to kick off the Con and one Saturday night to let loose after an intense day of gaming.
Join us Friday night from 9pm to midnight in the Hospitality Suite for a casual get-together to kick off the Con. Relax with some free soft drinks and snacks and jump in a game. We'll have a selection of board and card games, or bring your own. Whether you want to chill with your group or mingle with other Con attendees, come have some laughs with us. If you wish to enjoy an adult beverage, it's BYOB. Please imbibe responsibly. As there will be adult-themed games and drinks allowed, 18 and over only at the mixer, please. We will be checking IDs of those drinking alcoholic refreshments.
Saturday: Pooka's Carnivale
Join our Party Mistress, Pooka, in the Hospitality Suite from 9pm to 1am to indulge in some games, booze, silliness, mingling, and more booze. If you don't drink (or are the DD), never fear, enjoy a non-alcoholic refreshment and many inappropriate games! We'll be slinging drinks and having multiple drinking and non-drinking games set up: BattleShots, Cards Against Humanity, Drunk Quest, Red Dragon Inn, the crazy Hybrid Telestrations Against Humanity and more! Book a hotel room and make the most of the party!
VIP Hospitality Suite
Those who choose the VIP badge are granted access to our special VIP Hospitality Suite. The Suite consists of three interconnected rooms with plenty of tables to take a rest and enjoy some free refreshments and food.
GameScouts is a club tied to Heroicon that hearkens to organizations like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Like those organizations, members of GameScouts attain ranks through their actions and perseverance. Instead of Merit badges, GameScouts will earn Merit Pins--colorful, unique metal lapel pins that they can proudly display. As members collect Merit Pins, they can qualify for higher ranks in GameScouts.
Merit Pins are earned through various activities associated with Heroicon. For example, pre-registering for a 3-day badge will earn the "Heroicon 2015" Merit Pin. Other pins are earned over time as members achieve milestones, such as playing in 50 hours of games at Heroicon.

$5 Thank You
Can't make it to the Con but want to support us? This is the level for you! We will put your name on our website and in the printed Heroicon program to say thank you for supporting us.
$15 One-Day Badge
This reward level is good for a one day badge to Heroicon.
$25 Three-Day Badge
This reward level is good for a three-day badge to Heroicon. In addition, everyone at this reward level and higher will receive the Heroicon 2015 Merit Pin.
$60 VIP Badge
This reward level is for a three-day VIP badge to Heroicon. A VIP badge has several advantages:
- VIPs get early access to Event Registration. Is there an event you really want to play but are afraid it may fill up? A VIP badge will greatly enhance your chances of getting in the events you want.
- VIP Hospitality Suite. VIPs get access to the Hospitality Suite where they can enjoy free food and drink throughout the Con.
- VIP badge holders get the exclusive Heroicon VIP Merit Pin in addition to the Heroicon 2015 Merit Pin.
$235 Ultra VIP Package
The reward level includes everything in the VIP package tier, plus 2 nights in a Standard Room at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. Live the ultimate Con experience by staying Friday and Saturday night right at Heroicon's location. Note: You will still need to present a credit card when checking in to cover incidentals and liability.
$295 Ultra VIP Package for Two
Our highest reward level is identical to our Ultra VIP Package, but comes with two VIP badges (and two VIP and Heroicon 2015 Merit Pins). This is the best choice for two people to get the ultimate Heroicon experience!
Note: No badges, pins, or stretch goal rewards will be shipped. All rewards may be picked up onsite at the convention.
When backing a badge reward tier, you will still need to register for the convention at www.heroicon.org. After the Kickstarter has ended, we will email you a code to use when you register to show that you have already paid.
Our Kickstarter campaign will be fully funded at $1,200. However, we have many more cool ideas to enhance your con and gaming experience. If our funding reaches these levels, here is some of the cool stuff we will offer:
Overall Funding of $1,800
At $1,800, everyone who backs the $15 reward tier and above will receive the Kickstarter exclusive Heroicon Backer GameScouts Merit Pin.
Overall Funding of $3,000
If we reach $3,000, everyone who backs the $25 reward tier and above will get a FREE Heroicon 2015 commemorative T-shirt.
Overall Funding of $4,000
If we reach $4,000 in overall funding, everyone who backs the $25 reward tier and above will receive a FREE Heroicon collectible travel mug.
Overall Funding of $8,000
Ok, this one is really cool: We have been in contact with one of the most famous and popular fantasy authors, Mr. Terry Brooks. His epic Shannara series is in the process of being made into a TV show and he has graciously offered to come to Heroicon! While Mr. Brooks is not available in May 2015, funding at this level will allow us to secure him (schedule permitting) for Heroicon 2016!
Overall Funding Beyond $8,000
Still reading? That's awesome! Do you like what we have come up with so far? Just imagine what we can do to make this Convention rock with even more money!
If the Kickstarter reaches $3,000, everyone at the $25 reward tier and above will get a free shirt. However, if you really want a shirt regardless of the successful funding of the stretch goal or want more than one shirt, you may add $25 to your pledge for each shirt you want.
If you want to buy more than one badge, simply add the additional badge cost to your selected reward tier. We will send out surveys after the Kickstarter to sort out what the over-pledge is going toward.
Heroicon will happen whether or not the Kickstarter campaign funds, so why Kickstarter?
The Kickstarter allows us to attempt to fund some extras that would be too financially risky without Kickstarter's all or nothing funding. Also, while we have some financial backers to make sure the convention happens, if they end up paying for everything, the first year could possibly be the last year. We want to become an event that people look forward to yearly.
Risks and challenges
While the Convention will happen whether or not the Kickstarter is successful, there are other risks. Freak weather or other collective "Acts of God" could prevent the convention from taking place or force its relocation. There are also clauses in the hotel contract wherein the contract could be nullified. While both of these situations are highly unlikely, there exists a small chance they could materialize.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
