The Last Time is an adventure game coming to PC, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. It aims for the narrative depth and emotional impact of a modern adventure title, delivered to you with the graphical style and game mechanics of a classic point-and-click. The game’s focus is on the story; tough moral choices, tense action sequences, and deep characters and relationships. The plot is nonlinear; decisions that you make, both large and small, will influence how the narrative plays out. Check out the demo, available to play online or to download for Windows, Mac or Linux, to get a feel for the gameplay!

Jack Glover was a police officer. His life hadn’t been particularly eventful in spite of his line of work; his patch was relatively peaceful, and most of his patrols were spent chatting with his partner. One day, however, something went terribly wrong (you can play the prologue in the demo to find out more), and he suffered an emotional trauma. Cut to forty years later, and we find Jack languishing in a care home, living out his remaining years in solitude. Suddenly, the phone rings; the caller is somebody connected with his past, and they want to meet with him. This phone call starts a chain of events which forces Jack back into the real world, where he must overcome the challenges that come with age; physical frailty, ignorance of modern technology, and, most importantly, his difficulty connecting with people.

The gameplay is point-and-click-style; you walk around and explore environments, talk to people, and interact with objects. During conversations, you will be presented with interesting dialogue choices; rather than simply having a list of lines to go through one by one, the choices you make will change the flow of the conversation, and sometimes influence the narrative later on in the game. Action scenes will play out differently depending on your choice of approach; there is no ‘game over’ screen, and the story will continue whatever happens. There will be a puzzle-solving element to the game; my aim is for the puzzles to be intuitive and blend seamlessly into the narrative, rather than force you to be stuck for ages using a trial-by-error approach.

Jack Glover is old, cantankerous and cynical. He's often not sure how to deal with people - you can help him decide whether to be naughty or nice. He used to be pretty tough, but in his twilight years, all of the fight has gone out of him... or has it?

Sarah Price is smart, outspoken and sometimes sarcastic. She doesn't usually hang out with old people and gets impatient when they try to find the buttons on a touchscreen phone. She enjoys reading, going for walks and wasting time on the internet.

Darren Price is laid back, talkative and diligent. He became a police officer because he wanted a job where he could interact with people. He doesn't like wearing his police hat because it messes up his hair.

Thank you to everybody who has helped fund the Last Time on Kickstarter! As a reward for new backers, I've decided to add more content if we hit some new goals :)

At £5.5K, I'll have the budget to include some exciting extra scenes in the game: here's a teaser pic!

What if we get a great influx of backers, and we manage to get to £7.5K? Well, I'll have to reward you with a bonus mini-adventure in which you play as Sarah, included in the game and unlocked after you complete the main story!

I’m looking to secure some backing through Kickstarter so that I can make The Last Time the kind of game that I want it to be. The funds will give me a budget for a custom-made soundtrack, which is crucial for the cinematic feel of the game, allow me to have the subtitles translated into different European languages so that more people can play it, and give me some more time for development so that I can tell the story as it deserves to be told.

I'm Daniel Black! :D

I’ve always loved telling stories; I wrote my first choose-your-own adventure story when I was thirteen (an escape story where you take on the role of infamous English rebel Guy Fawkes), and in my adult life I perform improvised theatre, most recently via podcast. I've also been in a rap group, and directed a music video. I have a passion for video games, particularly ones with strong narratives that have an emotional impact on the player. Last year, I decided to finally start following my dreams; I began learning how to develop video games, using online tutorials. With the help of a great plug-in for the Unity engine called Adventure Creator, I've been able to make point-and-click adventure games; a couple of months ago, I released a well-received game jam entry called 'Don't Choke', a short rap battle adventure. You can read about my experience making The Last Time in my blog.

I really want to take my game development to the next level, and make an emotionally powerful game which has an impact on the people who play it. This is why I’m asking for funding to help make The Last Time - and my dream - a reality.

Risks and challenges

The risk with any video game development project is that funds will run out before the game is finished. Fortunately, I've already developed a good chunk of the game; I have a very good idea how long it takes to make each scene, and have confidence in my planned schedule. However, in the event that something unexpected happens, I will have to adjust; whatever happens, I will finish this project to the standard that I envision. I've put so much into this, there's no way I'm going to stop before I reach the end, whatever it takes (even if it means moving back in with my parents and living off cereal until the game's finished!).

I’m using Adventure Creator, a plugin for Unity, to make the game, which makes development a lot easier. Also, because I’m making the game entirely by myself (apart from the audio, for which I’m collaborating with the magnificent Tom Byrne), there’s no-one to whom I need to pay salaries or anything; I’m living frugally and am able to make the game on a tight budget.

I've been using a lot of free audio for the game so far: for a full list of the people who made the audio for the trailer and demo, visit http://bigcowstudios.com/the-last-time-music-and-sound-credits/.
