Our goal is to create a children's book that promotes awareness, and celebrates diversity.

So we imagined a fictional world in which children's anxieties about being different were put to rest, and each and every character learns to love and own their differences.

Emma Goes to School was written to inspire, and show kids that their differences are beautiful, and make them special and different, but never "less".

To make this dream a reality, we need to pay for things like illustrations, page design+layout, self-publishing, printing, and shipping.

By contributing to our campaign, you are helping to promote a world where we all embrace our differences, regardless of what diagnosis they come with, because we're all a little different.

Emma Goes to School is a children's book celebrates diversity, inspired by a little girl with special needs.

All of the characters in Emma Goes to School represent characteristics associated with Schaaf Yang Syndrome (SYS). Emma, the main character, has unique claws as a nod to the hand contractures commonly seen in people with SYS.

While meeting her classmates, Emma is able to explore many issues relating to physical and neurodiversity, including using a wheelchair, nonverbal communication, and being on the autism spectrum.

Emma Goes to School is inspired by a real girl named Emma Nelson, who was diagnosed with Schaaf-Yang Syndrome in 2016, and Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2017.

"I became inspired to write the book shortly after Emma was born, well before she had a diagnosis.  All we knew at that time was that Emma had small and uniquely shaped hands, with fingers that crossed over one another and difficulty feeding.  I started wondering what Emma would be like as she got older; how would other kids react to her differently shaped hands?  I decided that I wanted to write a book to help show her how to embrace her differences, and show others that it's not only alright to be different, it's something to be celebrated.  As Emma got older, other symptoms and characteristics of her disorder became more apparent.  After Emma received her diagnosis, I became further inspired to make Emma Goes to School a reality, to help promote awareness and acceptance for SYS and other disorders like it." - Kristin Pack

From the Foundation of Prader-Willi Research:

"Schaaf-Yang syndrome (SYS) is a genetic disorder caused by a disruption of the MAGEL2 gene on chromosome 15. The disrupted gene causing Schaaf-Yang syndrome is also missing in another, more common genetic disorder, Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). PWS is caused when MAGEL2 and several additional genes on chromosome 15 are missing or inactivated.

Schaaf-Yang syndrome shares many clinical features with Prader-Willi syndrome. Those include hypotonia, feeding difficulties during infancy, global developmental delay/intellectual disability, and sleep apnea. However, patients with Schaaf-Yang syndrome have a relatively higher prevalence of autism spectrum disorder, and almost all of them manifest joint contractures, typically affecting the finger joints, but in more severe cases also involving knees and elbows."

Self-publishing a children's book isn't cheap, and that's why we need your help!  Here is a breakdown of how we will use the money you're investing:

  • 25-30% will go directly to our illustrator, she deserves it!
  • 7-10% will go directly to our graphic designer, she deserves it!
  • Approximately 15% of all money raised will go to fees and taxes
  • The remainder will go to printing, marketing, promoting and best of all, providing every contributor within the continental U.S. with FREE SHIPPING!

The book is written, and our illustrator is exactly halfway done!

May is dedicated to crowdfunding, promoting, and making this project happen.

Our deadline to complete all Illustrations is August, giving our designer time to get the pages ready for the press by September.

Books will be shipped by October 15, 2017, and the launch party will occur at the beginning of October.

Inspiration: Emma Nelson

Emma Nelson was born on June 22nd, 2014. She was 3 weeks early, and came via emergency c-section. Emma began having difficulties feeding and regulating her temperature, amongst other unique characteristics doctors couldn't explain. After almost 4 weeks in the hospital, Emma was sent home and her parents put in contact with a team of doctors and therapists to help determine the cause of these issues.

In 2016, Emma received a diagnosis of Schaaf-Yang Syndrome (SYS), a very rare genetic disorder. In 2017, Emma received a co-diagnosis of autism, as is common in children with SYS. Emma attends 5 different physical and developmental therapies each week, and hopes to start a pre-school program in the Fall. She loves swimming, books and any kind of pasta.

Risks and challenges

We feel confident in our ability to meet our October release date for this project. However, everyone working on the project are engaged in full time jobs or activities, including our illustrator who is only 13 and a full time student. Donation levels that include plush dolls, hard covers, hand drawn art, etc. may take longer to receive and have been noted accordingly.
