Moonbeam Hand-Dyed Hammocks
I wanted to create an adventure hammock as unique and beautiful as the places I saw in my travels. The Moonbeam hammock combines ultralight technical fabrics and seamless design with traditional hand-dying techniques and a modern color palette to produce a hammock that is ultralight, super-soft, travel-tough, and as bright and beautiful as the people and places who enjoy them. They are perfect for an afternoon in the backyard, a day at the beach, chillin' on campus, hiking, camping, music festivals, or the trip of a lifetime.
We hand-make and dye our hammocks in 17 color blends and counting.
All color blends are available. Choose your pledge package and we will send you a survey after we are funded to get color preferences from backers.
Hang Easy Daisy Chain available in all Color Blend Colors.
Do Good, Enjoy Life!
Moonbeam believes it is our responsibility to be a force for positive change. This philosophy is behind everything we do, and every stage of production.
We source American-made parachute nylon because we know it is produced under tighter environmental regulations and with better conditions and wages for workers than if it was made in Indonesia or China.
Many travel hammock companies sell hammocks made in Indonesian and Chinese factories. We hand-make each hammock in Maine, USA.
We use solar power to light our home and work-space. With the funds from this Kickstarter, we will begin the move toward a solar-powered, recycled cargo container workshop.
We recycle our hammock and strap scraps back into the making of stuff-sacks and travel bags.
To further help offset the industrial activities inherent in making a product from synthetic fibers, we work with Trees.org to plant food forests.
As we grow, Moonbeam is excited to work with other like-minded companies and organizations to be a force for positive change, and enable others to do the same.
Hi, I'm Dan. During my twenties I backpacked across the U.S., parts of Central and South America, Turkey, Southeast Asia, and I taught art in rural South Africa. Everywhere I went, I bought a colorful local hammock to relax in and to remind me of each wonderful place and the experiences I had there.
When I lost my hammock collection, I wanted to find a new hammock that was as colorful as my adventures. Unsatisfied with what I could find, I decided to make and hand-dye my own ripstop nylon hammock. The first hammock was beautiful and like nothing I had ever seen or felt before.
I made a small run, and gave them out to friends to use and test around the country.
Everyone loved the hammocks! After a year of testing, none of the hammocks had faded or failed. I learned a lot in the process, and the new Moonbeam Hammocks are the result of our efforts. They are made from high-quality, ultralight, super-soft materials, pack easy, and are built to stand up to adventure!
The breathable Silktique ripstop nylon fabric is extremely soft to the touch, like silk, and it stretches just a little for perfect comfort. I chose soft and extremely strong poly tape webbing for the straps. It will not damage trees, and is easy to tie and untie if you are not using our Hang-Easy system. If you are using the Hang-Easy system, our carabiners are some of the smallest, lightest, and strongest in the hammock industry, adding a touch of class to our casual hammocks. All Moonbeam Hammocks include a 6" x 8" attached stuff sack. Fully packed with straps and carabiners, the Moonbeam Hammock weighs under 400 grams and takes up about as much space as a mango.
The money raised by this Kickstarter will purchase a recycled cargo container which we will renovate and turn into a solar powered workshop for Moonbeam Hammocks. Funds will also go towards hammock materials, carabiners, and marketing.
Up to this point I have been able to run Moonbeam out of my living room, using my own personal funds and credit for startup capital. My wife and I make and dye all the hammocks in our spare time. For Moonbeam to grow, I need to move to a semi-permanent location and hire employees. Your support will make my Moonbeam dreams a reality! Thank you!
I'm excited to share my colorful hammocks with the world that inspired them!
Welcome to the Moonbeam Tribe!
Risks and challenges
There are always unknowns when starting a business. In preparing for this Kickstarter campaign I did a lot of market research and looked over all other similar crowd-funded campaigns.
From my research, and my experiences as a backer for other Kickstarter and crowd-funding campaigns, I expect most potential problems to come from supply chain issues and scalability.
Considering this from the ground-floor, I have made every effort to solve supply chain problems before they start, from choice of materials through establishing relationships with manufacturers and suppliers months before launching this Kickstarter. Because of this, I am confident in my ability to produce products on schedule, whether we are satisfying 100 orders or 10,000. If I exceed my goal, I am prepared to lease or build production and warehouse space and increase the scale of my production to meet demand.
I currently co-own and run an established small business. I am experienced hiring and managing a team of employees and communicating with clients. I look forward to the challenges ahead!
