Alteil Artist Spotlight – Help Design a Card Now

We were gearing up for our big weekend here at Apocoplay and were thinking about all the fun things we want to do for our backers once we get funded or once we launch… and then we figured, why wait? Why not start now? Why not give our backers the opportunity to design a new Alteil card right now? Interested? Read on…

Alteil Artist Spotlight – Yuji Kaida

So by now everyone has a good idea who Katsuya Terada is thanks to last week’s Kotaku spotlight and the word ‘Zelda.’ You probably also know Shunya Yamashita’s Marvel Bishojo work, because of well, internet. But then there’s the other member of our ‘big three’ of Japanese artists, Yuji Kaida. He created cards for us like Death Dragon Zangadylan and Water Emperor Legyre and is listed on our page as an artist for Transformers, Godzilla and Gundam

Those three very popular franchises (and countless others Kaida-san has worked on – like Macross, Dunbine, and Ultraman) had their robots/monsters/powered suits designed by anime and special effects designers. But their designs are specifications for toy makers, effects team, and animators respectively. Yuji Kaida’s job is to bring these designs to life and present them to us, the fans, through awesome art that shows off just how cool this stuff is. Remember when you were a kid and bought a Transformer whose arms barely moved because the box art showed that robot in action looking awesome? That was Yuji Kaida. Remember when you bought a Gundam model kit and fooled yourself into thinking that after you built it, the thing would look half as cool as the action-packed box art? That was Yuji Kaida. Remember when you saw a huge movie poster with a painting of Godzilla fighting some other monster in plumes of fire and city-spanning destruction (and it looked nothing like a guy in a rubber suit)? Yuji Kaida again.

In his career, Kaida-san has pumped out literally thousands of huge paintings of your favorite characters leaping through the air, cutting things in half, and breathing fire – sometimes two or three of those things at the same time.

In fact, Yuji Kaida is so hardworking, he’s anxious to get started working on another card for us, even though his stretch goal is a still a ways off. He’s been bugging all week about what kind of crazy monster we’d like to see for our game, but we haven’t even had a moment to think about it. This is where you come in, faithful Kickstarter backers! That’s right, we’ve decided to turn this into a great opportunity to let our backers have some serious fun, and show you all just what’s possible when a super-veteran artist like Kaida-san teams up with – well, you! Everyone sound off in the comments with your ideas! Please use the main comments section on the Kickstarter page so everyone can join in the conversation.

Let’s put our heads together and come up with a really cool monster for Kaida-san to create!

How about some lesser form or distant cousin of Cthulhu? A "mind controller" that would either force an enemy's card(s) back to their owner's hand or prevent an enemy character from blocking for a turn or two when he enters the field?

On that note, reading comprehension is a powerful and underrated skill. As a real comment, I really like Kaida's work, and will probably spend some time perusing the card list to see if he did more work.

I think that an alpaca or llama-themed monster would be awesome! Not even Pokemon has done one of those yet.
