The story begins on video game streaming site Twitch.tv, where a competitive subculture is quickly gaining momentum. It’s called “speedrunning,” the art of exploiting every secret and glitch in a game in order to beat it as fast as possible.
Perhaps the best and most famous speedrunner is Narcissa Wright. In 2014, she beats The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – a game that takes ordinary humans around 20 hours to complete – in just 18 minutes and 10 seconds. This world record-setting feat catapults her to stardom and cements her status as a gaming legend. She's flown to gaming events all over the globe, earns $80,000 a year from streaming, and builds up a fanbase of more than 150,000 followers.
But then, suddenly, at the height of her fame, Narcissa does something unexpected: She stops speedrunning. Narcissa remains out of the spotlight until she makes a big announcement: She comes out as a transgender woman.
Narcissa hopes her audience will be supportive. But while many fans rally behind her, some viewers turn on her. An obsessive group of haters gathers on internet forums to harass, threaten, and cyberbully her.
Narcissa dreams of feeling the same love and support she had in the past. So she hatches a plan to resurrect her speedrunning career. She is determined to win back her former fans by setting a new world record for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And she’s willing to shut out most of the “real world,” in her quest for glory.
Trapped in this isolated digital existence, Narcissa still yearns for real connection. So, when a viewer named D_Gurl starts flirting in Narcissa’s stream chat, a romance blooms. Narcissa finds herself torn between the addictive allure of her live stream and an adventurous “real life” with D_Gurl.
So, will Narcissa embrace a "real" in-person connection, or will she be seduced again by the glow of the screen?
BREAK THE GAME has been in production for two and a half years. In that time, we've filmed over 100 hours of original footage chronicling Narcissa's life story and capturing her adventures.
The film has been a labor of love, shot with a skeleton crew, borrowed equipment, and minimal resources. This approach worked well for us during production, because it made things more intimate and meant we could maintain full creative control.
But as any Zelda fan knows, it's dangerous to go alone. Making a movie is expensive, and we need additional funds for editing, graphics, animation, music, color correction, sound mixing, and festival submission fees. With your help, we can tell Narcissa's incredible story in a way that's never been done before and share BREAK THE GAME with the world.
At its core, BREAK THE GAME is a film about finding community and connection online. As we finish post-production, it seems only fitting that we invite Narcissa's followers, the speedrunning community, and Zelda fans to participate in the journey and help make this unprecedented film a reality.
Please join the adventure by donating and sharing the campaign on social media.
We've teamed up with some of our favorite artists to produce original posters, earrings, and even a custom N64 controller.
