About this project
What is Fetishman?
Fetishman is the UK’s finest fetish-that-isn’t-porn humorous comic featuring the latex-clad superhero who repeatedly fails to fight crime due to being clad in his restrictive latex outfit. Since 2004 Fetishman has been a semi-regularly updating comic and webcomic and if you're unfamiliar with his adventures many of them can be revelled in at fetishman.co.uk
WARNING: Fetishman discusses themes concerning alternative human sexuality and as such may not be suitable for children or adults who don’t like reading about that sort of thing.
What’s this Kickstarter for?
This is a Kickstarter to create a magnificent Filthology of the earliest Fetishman issues, with extra material, new sketches, and answers to the throbbing, unanswered questions over just how Fetishman came to be the superhero we know and love.
The Filthology itself will be an amazing a5 300+ page book-tome-thing, that includes issue 1 through to 10 of the fetishman comics alongside other art and nonsense from the mind of Geof.
Who’s behind this absurdity?
Hi! I’m Doctor Geof and in 2004 I’d just finished a PhD at York Uni. As a fresh-faced physicist I decided to follow my natural career progression and became an artist and comics creator, with Fetishman being the first comic I ever created. Over ten years later Fetishman is still with me, and it’s now a bi-annual 32 page comic with an online version and a loyal fan base covering a wide spectrum of subcultures including fetishists, goths, steampunks and other comics fans and creators.
Why the world needs Fetishman now more than ever
In a world where sexual freedom is fighting hard against increasing online restrictions, the existence of a comic like Fetishman and how it treats fetish-related themes becomes even more important. Aside from his main job of fighting crime, badly, so very badly, Fetishman also tackles topical themes, for example Fetishman #7: the Banned issue mines the comedy gold of the 2008 Criminal Justice & Immigration Bill to bring you gems like this:
Why use Kickstarter?
As of May 2015 there are 19 issues of Fetishman, all of which have been independently published by me (as has all of the art and other comics I’ve ever created). Fans and newcomers alike have become increasingly interested in, and supportive of, having a “full set” of the comics, but producing something of this scale presents a challenge for an independent artist like me.
Whilst reprinting each of the first 10 issues is an option, my passion to create amazing things lies at the core of everything I produce, and I have wanted to make something else even more beautiful and representative of the Fetishman world for some time.
Finally, I realised the best way to bring the rude, rubbery and ridiculous world of Fetishman to fans and newcomers alike would be to create a Filthology; a 300+ page compendium featuring issues 1 to 10 of Fetishman, flyer artwork, historical and new sketches, discussion, and answers to so many of the questions about Fetishman fans have asked me over the past 11 years.
With your help I want to use Kickstarter to make the Fetishman Filthology a reality, and produce something utterly beautiful and lasting that includes Fetishman’s formative years.
Who else is involved?
This production is brought to you by the letters G, S H and the colour Tea.
G, is obviously for Geof who is responsible for unleashing the debaucherous imaginings of the Doctor Geof world on the general public.
S is for Sara, a magnificent Scottish warrior of words who makes sure Geof’s work gets talked about in the UK press, makes sure his Tea levels remain healthy and bugs him about deadlines.
H is for Harry, comedian, web mastress and all round shower of sparkles who always delivers. Harry runs the Doctor Geof webshop and Facebook pages and is a fount of knowledge and expertise on all things retail.
There's a Fetishman Kickstarter newsletter which Team Geof will use to send out regular updates throughout the live project and beyond into fulfilment as well as posting regularly on social media channels, and we'd like to thank Cogwheel films and keef baker for helping make the kickstarter video as mighty as it is.
If the project goes way beyond funding (which, as I'm writing this after the launch, it totally has you beautiful people! Cheers!) then that will allow us to offer an improved Filthology with added content and increasingly lovelier formats. If this occurs we will regularly be adding stretch goals in the project updates. Currently activated stretch goals are:
Stretch Goal £9,000 - "And Fetishman Shall Know His Place!"
... and yours too! When reading your copy of the Fetishman Filthology that is! If we reach the astounding target of £9,000 Mico Couture have offered to help us make an awesome Fetishman latex rubber bookmark! But clearly there's other stuff too:
- a Kickstarter exclusive Fetishman latex rubber bookmark by Mico Couture with all tiers from the £25 Soft Filthology and above!
- another Kickstarter exclusive postcard for all tiers from the £25 Soft Filthology and above;
- a digital e-book of the Fetishman comic issue #11 for every tier from the £10 Virtual Filthology and above.
Stretch Goal £12,000 - "And So Very Shiny!"
Double the original target is a frightening concept. I mean, double? What on earth could I do to make the Filthology awesome enough to adequately thank you glorious humans? Well, I'd love to Spot varnish the cover, but on its own that doesn't feel sufficient. SO, what I'd actually like to add at this stretch goal is:
- Spot varnished gloss covers! What would be more fetishman than an even shinier Filthology cover?Applicable to all tiers from the £25 Soft Filthology and above;
- Inclusion of a separate extra, small format mini-comic "My First Fetishman Comic!" (A Fetishman Primer "not for all ages") for all tiers from the £25 Soft Filthology and above;
- a digital e-book of the mini-comic "My First Fetishman Comic!" for every tier from the £10 Virtual Filthology and above;
- a digital e-book of the Fetishman comic issue #12 for every tier from the £10 Virtual Filthology and above.
Stretch Goal £15,000 - "And HUGE!"
Early on I think Mavis suggested that it might be nice to have a bigger book, not just longer but physically larger. Not an a5 Filthology but a mighty a4 Filthology! We got the quotes and did the maths and the wiser choice was to go with the a5 but ... well ... this is SPAAARTA-no-sorry-but-hey-what-the-heck-let's-GIVE-IT-A-TRY! I know it's a way away, I know that, it's going to nudge the shipping a bit but, damn it IT WOULD BE SO COOL! So yeah, reaching the "And HUGE!" Stretch Goal will initiate the following:
- a physically larger Filthology, A4 instead of A5, for all tiers from the £25 Soft Filthology and above;
- Fetishman mouth-zip stickers! Turn any object into a mutant genetically-re-engineered Fetishman with the addition of a Fetishman mouth-zip sticker! A small 10cm square sheet of stickers in the shape of Fetishman's mouth! For the joy of it and for all tiers from the £25 Soft Filthology and above;
- as well as 12 extra pages in the Filthology to allow for new original Filthology-exclusive content "the Ultimate Fetishman Character Guide" with vital statistics, power ratings and other non-canon facts and "The Very Glossary" for terms I feel want to be defined badly, so very badly. Applicable to every tier from the £10 Virtual Filthology and above;
- a digital e-book of the Fetishman comic issue #13 for every tier from the £10 Virtual Filthology and above.
Creating the Fetishman comics for the past 11 years has been a delight, and it’s been a constant source of giddy joy to me as an artist that people like it and that it’s continued to grow in popularity. This project is an opportunity for me to make something truly special that I care about and that will make for awkward coffee table conversations in living rooms all over the world!
"Fetishman is everything a pervert could need from a comic. Wicked, delightful, saucy and hilarious." Jamie Smart
"Doctor Geof interrogates the intricacies of the human condition with verve and insight, deconstructing semiotic analysis whilst addressing ethical considerations within a post-structuralist text idiom. He is also a very naughty boy." Rosie Lugosi
"His world is unique, obscure, funny, thought provoking.... I implore you to buy his work and support him and keep his crazy brain fuelled by all the tea in Yorkshire." Jed Phoenix
"If I was cast away alone on a desert island, with just eight gramophone records and one luxury, I would discard the gramophone records and take the Cheeky Girls and the collected works of Fetishman. Who could possibly need more?" Robert Rankin
Risks and challenges
I’ve deliberately left a realistic gap from funding to delivery to give me enough time to fulfil all the orders without the need to rush any aspect. I’ve costed this to the best of my knowledge based on current raw materials costs, UK and international shipping costs and the random behaviour of delivery companies so, aside from any shock rises, this should be covered.
In the event the UK Government finally squeezes out a law to banish all Fetish related art, Geof will flee undercover of darkness to Berlin where he will fulfil the rest of the orders and ship them in brown paper packaging clearly labelled ‘recycled gardening supply almanacks’.
Finally, in the event of illness, injury or other general mishap to me, Team Geof’s main focus will be to keep all backers informed and updated as much as possible and to find ways to ensure delivery isn’t delayed more than absolutely necessary.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
