About

For us Cultistorm is an expression of our respect and love for Lovecraft. It’s more than just an ordinary board game.  Our subject choice wasn’t motivated by business reasons, but a very  deep commitment to the work and heritage of H.P. Lovecraft. We would  like to create a great board game to those who know and love Lovecraft,  and we would like to make Lovecraft’s work known to those who are board  game fans. 

  • We’re in negotiations with our manufacturers about how it would be possible to make the language packs available regardless of the number of backers. 
  • We’re doing well with working out solutions for the retail pledge and process.

Cultistorm is a higly interactive cooperative game for 3-5 (1-6 with expansions) players.

We  wanted to create a unique cooperative gaming experience and game mechanic  where every player is equally needed, where nobody can become an alpha  player and repress the others and nobody is left out of planning and  fighting.

Cultistorm can be played in numerous ways:

  • The cooperative version of the game, we recommend as the default base game, is  an intense very interactive 75-120 minute game.
  •  In the narrative game mode we can use the Script  Book which will make the game longer, but very immersive, creating an  atmosphere as if we were reading one of Lovecraft’s short stories.
  • With the "Behind the Scene" expansion we can bring an Overlord into play, that is a player who is going to play against us. As our common enemy, they will be the one playing in place of the game.
  • In the "Storm of Cultists" campaign expansion we created a seven-part campaign experiance with consecutive stories and quests.
  • And with the "Lonely Struggle" expansion we add a solo gameplay.
  • There are also nine more expansion modules to make the game more varied, complex and enjoyable.

1.) ILLUSTRATED SCRIPT BOOK - with over 400 flash fiction stories

We have devised a very efficient way to help your immersion into the Lovecraftian atmosphere of Cultistorm: we bring you a script book with over 400 flash fiction stories.  Every character and every location (may it be of this world or  another), the investigators, the cultist casts, the different events all  get their own story. You can also read a flash fiction piece before an  encounter with a cultist which does not only intensify the gaming  experience, but can also have an effect on the encounter. The stories arrive to you in a beautiful printed book with full page colour illustrations.

 2.) SHORT STORY COLLECTION - with 21 (or more) Short Stories 

We would like to make the game as immersive possible so instead of  flavour texts on cards we are writing short stories together with a team  of talented weird fiction writers. We give a complete volume of short stories along with the game, which is worthy of Lovecraft’s literary heritage and the genre requirements he created.  The short stories are directly connected to the different casts of  cultists, locations and Great Old Ones appearing in the game, creating  such a detailed world and back story which is quite unusual in the case  of board games.

 3.) SOUNDTRACK – with music of Graham Plowman 

If you feel like listening to some music while reading or playing,  you can turn on Graham Plowman’s album he created especially for  Cultistorm. Graham is perhaps the most acknowledged composer of the Lovecraftian subculture.  He creates this Lovecraftian atmosphere with a mixture of symphonic  orchestras and choir music, using instruments from in Lovecraft’s time.  His music is powerful, authentic and incredibly high quality.

4.) EXCLUSIVE SPECIAL EDITION BOX

We’ve created beautiful special edition box for the game and to be  honest we, the creators of the game, fell in love with it right away.  It’s a unique and very fitting “packaging” for our game which expresses  the uniqueness of its idea and quality. 

UNCOMMON CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT: EVERYTHING IS FOR YOU!

We didn’t plan any paying  add-ons for the campaign. We would like to give you all the elements,  all expansions and booster packs as Stretch Goals and to give them along the base game for free without any extra costs.

We want to inspire you,  that's why all the Stretch Goals will be visible from the launch of the campaign.

If there any expansions or elements we don’t reach as Stretch Goals  until the end of the campaign (but we hope it will not happen), we will make sure that they become available in the Pledge Manager after  the campaign.

We would like to put together a campaign which fulfills your expectations and makes you happy.

Since the expansion modules are the most important and valuable upgrades for the game, we decided to bring all of them forward so that they can be unlocked the soonest. We’ll get to the other Stretch Goals once all the expansions are surely added to your box.

In our Kickstarter Updates we will show you the details our game and expansions, our background stories, short stories and scipts, soundtrack albums and  everything that may interest you.

If we have 500 BACKERS from a given language area:
– we translate the language dependent elements of the game  ( boards, cards, rule books and explanations), and we’ll make it  available in the Pledge Manager after the campaign as a paying add on.

If we have 1000 BACKERS from a given language area:
– we’ll translate the Script Book and the short story collection too. It will also be a paying add on in the Pledge Manager – but you only need to pay the production cost.

If we have 1500 BACKERS from a given language area:
– Cultistorm will be available on this language as part of the Cultistorm – for free!  After the campaign every backer will be able to choose in what  (available) language they would like to receive their Cultistorm  package.

If you want to receive Cultistorm in your mother tongue, choose the pledge corresponding to your language!  We would like to emphasise that under 1500 backers what we promise is  to prepare the language package and make it available for purchase. It  means that you will receive Cultistorm in ENGLISH, but after the  campaign you will be able to buy your language pack  in the Pledge Manager. However, if we reach the necessary 1500 backers, you are going to receive Cultistorm in your chosen language (so not  in English) and you won’t need to pay extra for the whole localised version!

Please help us, in order to reach as many board game  and Lovecraft fans as possible in their own languages as well so that  our project reaches more people even in their mother tongue! Every player chooses an investigator with a unique, upgradable ability. Then they draw two equipment cards, and keep one of them. Every player receives their unique starter action deck.

In every turn, one or more cultists appear on one of the five location cards.  The number of cultists is determined by the circulating cultist marker. The cultists who appeared before but haven’t been vanquished stay on their location. The cultist die is rolled for every location; its combat symbol gets added to the strength of the cultist who appears there.

The investigators roll their own dice and they place them into the middle of the board, as a kind of shared reserve, then they discard their used cards and draw new action cards from their own deck until they reach their hand limit.

In the third phase the Terror marker moves forward; it influences the activation of horrible events lying in wait for the players. The Terror marker can advance as a side effect of played actions or as a punishment. It brings the special event cards of the Terror Circle into play depending on their strength. The players have the opportunity to reveal, postpone or modify these events.

During the Preparation phase, the longest and most important part of the game, players decide where they move, what local actions they carry out and who fights the cultists and where. They can also decide to search for new equipment or use other special actions. In the fight against cultists the players can use their action deck, their special ability, the support of the others and an investigation die – these help players to create the combination of symbols they need to defeat the cultist. The cultist’s value is modified by their own die roll, their special rules or effects and their location.

The cards in the investigators’ action deck consist of two parts: There are magical symbols for combat – these can be used by the players themselves and there is the supporting effect enabling the combat of other investigators. Whenever a player uses a card, they have to decide if they want to use the symbol or the supporting action. The uniqueness of Cultistorm’s cooperative gameplay is that we can only activate the actions of our own cards, by giving them to other players. There are no action cards in the game whose actions the players themselves could carry out. During the game players can also upgrade the skills of their own investigators and they can unlock special actions connected to locations.

After each investigator has occupied their chosen place, they play their actions in an order defined by their location: they research, fight, heal or support the other investigators by using the options offered by their cards. When an investigator defeats a cultist, they receive a trophy they can later use in combats or to level-up. Also, the dimension gates can be sealed by these trophies.

We’ll be honest: the game is hard, but those who have read Lovecraft’s stories know that only this atmosphere is worthy of the Master. The investigators have to work in a well-coordinated manner, carefully contemplating in the case of every card if they want to use it for their own goals or to help the others. Luck plays only a tiny role in the fight against the cultists, however, because of the game’s fragile equilibrium this small part can turn out to be fateful. The players can also unearth some important and unexpected things during our research. If there are too many cultists in play at the same time, we lose as investigators. If even one Old One gets through the locations, we lose. If we fail to seal every location in time, we lose. If even one investigator dies, we lose. We can only win if we seal all five locations successfully before the cultist deck runs out, if the Endgame card is not activated on the Terror Circle, if we manage to kill the summoned Old Ones or if every cultist in every location is vanquished.

However, winning is only the beginning! New expansions will be revealed during the campaign, three major expansions and campaign mode. There will be cultist creatures, cultist casts with unique abilities, otherworldly dimensions opened by the arrival of Great Old Ones… The huge amount of extra content revealed during the campaign won’t only make the list of game elements longer, it will also add on new game mechanics to make our confrontation with the Great Old Ones even more varied and exciting. And of course there is the Narrative game play which doesn’t only add a literary background to encounters, events, locations but it also influences the game play. 

We only  have  a draft version of the Rulebook in English and only text versions of  the other languages. The final versions are in progress -  we ask for  your patience. Thank you.

In  some reviews you can see wooden meeples. The reason for this is that we  didn’t have as many 3D printed miniature sets  as we sent out prototypes to the international reviewers. Therefore, we  replaced the minis with meeples. Naturally, the final game is going to  arrive with the miniatures introduced in the campaign.

We will collect this via our Pledge Manager after the campaign ends. This  is so we can be fair to all our backers as shipping is rarely one size  fits all, and also give you more stretch goodies and possibly a choice  of carrier options. 

In most cases, you will not be hit with customs or VAT either as we are  offering Customs Friendly Shipping to the countries where most of our  backers are located. 

Due to the size of the rewards and risk of bounce back, we cannot ship to PO Boxes domestically or internationally.

Risks and challenges

We'll be honest: this is our first Kickstarter campaign. We have been preparing for this project for three years and Purple Meeple Games is lucky to have the 30 year publishing experience and network of Hungary's biggest board game publisher behind us. We have put more than one year's work into testing and balancing the game and we are also preparing the production with utmost care.

The estimated delivery date for this project is October 2019, but keep in mind this is only an estimate. Also, due to the logistics of international shipping, backers in different regions of the world may receive their rewards sooner than others. We've done our best to minimize this as much as possible, and we are always happy to refund pledges if for some totally unforeseen reason the game can't be delivered at all.

We promise to keep you informed on the project with regular and frequent news so that you can always be sure of your investment.

REFUND POLICY

We offer a full refund, including fees, up to 14 days after the project ends. After 14 days and until we pay the production agreement with the manufactory, we offer a no questions asked refund minus the Kickstarter and payment processing fees (which we can’t get back from them after 14 days). After we pay the production agreement with the manufactory, we do not offer a refund. If we fail to fulfill your game you are entitled to a full refund, including fees.

All refunds after 14 days may be processed via PayPal or the payment reversed through Stripe to your credit card at our discretion. Refunds within 14 days are issued through payment reversal via Stripe to your credit card.

This project is funded in USD. All refunds will be issued in USD in the exact amount of USD received, minus applicable Kickstarter and payment processing fees depending on the time of your refund request.
