The Island of Doctor Necreaux: Second Edition (The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e) is a cooperative adventure game for 1 to 4 secret agents set in a 50s-era pulp-sci-fi world. The diabolical Doctor Necreaux has captured the world's top scientists and forced them to build a Doomsday Device. His ultimatum:

The nations of the world agree that surrender is unacceptable. Your team has been sent to Necreaux’s remote island fortress to ensure the world’s safety. As a failsafe, another team has already deployed a bomb deep within the volcano. Your mission: Find the scientists and escort them to the escape shuttle before the bomb blows Dr. Necreaux and his facility to Kingdom Come.

You must be quick, but also cautious! Necreaux’s security systems, diabolical traps, and fiendish creations will fight you every step of the way.

Good luck! The world is counting on you.

Two agents, about to encounter a monster: Living Lava.

 Gameplay Highlights

Simultaneous play: You take one turn together as a team. You're never stuck waiting for someone else's turn to finish.

Creative team play: Combo your agent’s powers with your teammates’ powers. Plan as a team when to rest and when to explore.

Solo Play: The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e is specifically designed to support solo play. Infiltrate Necreaux's lair and defeat him single-handedly!

Exploration: Go through the adventure deck and explore the island. The scenery is nice, even if it’s crawling with diabolical monsters.

Press Your Luck: How fast can you go before you get snared by a trap? Should you spend a charge to re-roll your dice?

Speed of 11 with a trap roll of 7? Looks like someone's falling in a pit...
Speed of 11 with a trap roll of 7? Looks like someone's falling in a pit...

Resource Management: Decide when to use items and when to spend the charges that fuel your agent abilities and when it’s better to save them.

Replayability: The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e has multiple setup and play variants. You can adjust the difficulty to accommodate a wide range of player skill. The island and agent skills are entirely card-based, so they're different every time. Fans of the original enjoy finding new skill combos to explore and exploit.

Expandable: We have a prototype of a stand-alone cross-compatible sequel for The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e. If/when it comes out, you'll be able to use all cards (skills, adventure cards, etc.) and play modes from The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e with the sequel, and vice versa.

Before stretch goals are unlocked, the game will include:

  • 108 cards: 76 adventure cards, 4 secret caches, 2 special cards, and 26 skill cards.
  • A  game tracker.
  • 50 charge tokens, 12 damage tokens, 12 XP (experience point) tokens, and 3 "Unstoppable" tokens.
  • A speed marker, a draw marker, and a countdown marker.
  • 11 six-sided dice.
  • Two full color rule books: How to Play and Extended Rules and Glossary

...and The Kicker (a limited edition skill card) has been unlocked!

Assemble Your Team:

Your team starts by selecting skill cards for your agents. Your agent's skills determine their special abilities. You also take dice and put starting charges on your agent's skill cards.

Prepare The Island:

A deck of 76 adventure cards represents Doctor Necreaux’s volcanic island lair. The scientists are hidden somewhere in the middle of the adventure deck, the escape shuttle is hidden in the bottom. Your goal is to find the scientists and the escape shuttle before you run out of time.

Embark On Your Mission:

Everyone takes one turn together as a team. At the start of each turn, your team decides whether to explore or rest. When you explore you declare a speed.

Yeah, a speed of eight sounds reasonable...
Yeah, a speed of eight sounds reasonable...

This represents how many cards you want to draw while exploring the island. Remember: You want to draw as many cards as you can so you can get to the scientists and then the escape shuttle as quickly as possible. You have a limited number of turns before the island blows up! Be careful: If you go too fast you might not notice a devastating trap before your team falls right into it.

Unless your speed is three or less, it's time to fight some cyber-sharks.

During a rest, your team can heal damage, recharge skill and item cards, and do a little scouting.

During a rest action you can rest, recharge, and scout. (Art from Rapid Healer, Untapped Reserves, and Keen Senses.)

$50: Citizen!

At this level you'll receive one copy of The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e. The includes all unlocked stretch goals and shipping in the UK and USA (reduced cost shipping for EU and Australia).

Also includes:

  • As a citizen, your voice will be heard. Periodically, we'll invite you to vote on some of our decisions at Invisible City. Some may be big ones, like which games we should focus on next. Others may be small, such as: "Should we include black and white pawns or purple and gray?"
  • Your name in the credits under "Citizens"
  • Copies of the post-campaign and final print-and-play PDFs, as per the Crafty Agent backers.

$75: Adventurer & Sidekick

$250: Heroic Cameo!

One copy of The Island of Doctor Necreaux: Second Edition. This includes all unlocked stretch goals and shipping in the UK and USA (reduced cost shipping for Australia, Canada, and the EU).

Also: Your likeness on one of the Skill cards. You'll get your pick (in backer order – first backer at this level gets first pick, and so on) from the following skills: Healer, Lucky, Martial Artist, Psychic Blaster, Pyrokinetic, or Scout.

Here’s an example of what you can expect. We asked Alicia (our skill card artist) to draw Desirée’s sister as our Rocketeer:

If you commit to this reward, you must send us pictures of yourself (One full-body and one face close-up with a neutral (no smiling) expression) by 7 days after the end of the campaign - and sooner is even better. Why? Alicia needs to create your portrait – we can’t send the files to the printer without it! We will do everything we can to get your picture, but if we don’t have it by 7 days after the campaign we’ll commission art and go to print.

Also includes:

  • Your name in the “Heroic Agents” section of the Credits, stating which card you’re on.

  • Original sketch of your skill card portrait. (May exclude some countries due to shipping costs and/or regulations.)

  • Copies of the post-campaign and final print-and-play PDFs, as per the Crafty Agent backers.

$500 (Was $700!): A Game Just For You!

A game, personalized and made just for you! You’ll need to provide photos for the game and information about the subject of the game. You’ll receive a print-and-play copy of the game, with card files pre-formatted to print a deck at DriveThru Cards.

This level includes all the rewards of a Citizen-level pledge.

The following examples are games Jonathan made for the Game of the Month at Invisible City. He did not format them for DriveThru Cards, but the style, structure, and play of the games is a fair example of the kind of game you’ll get.

All orders include free shipping to the UK and USA and discounted shipping for Australia, Canada, and Europe. No VAT for orders in Canada, the EU, or the USA.

We will ship to the following countries, but the shipments will not have tracking: Croatia, Cyprus, Iceland, Malta, and Switzerland.

Much like the diabolical Doctor himself, we wish we could bring Necreaux to every doorstep in the world. Sadly, there are a number of places where - for various reasons - that’s just not viable. We will not send copies of the game to Africa, Asia, Central America, Russia, or South America. If you live in one of the aforementioned locations, the $15 full-art print-and-play reward level may be a good fit for you. We reserve the right to decline to ship to someplace we didn’t account for above. In the unlikely event we find we’re unable to ship to you, we will promptly contact you to work something out.

Invisible City, LLC is a two-person operation in Pflugerville, TX (Just north of Austin). We have over 120 free print-and-play boardgames on our website at: http://invisible-city.com/ (or you can check them out on BoardGame Geek: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamepublisher/320/invisible-city-productions ). Invisible City also published Inevitable – one of the first successful board games on Kickstarter – under the Dystopian Holdings imprint back in 2010: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dystopianholdings/inevitable-dystopian-tabletop-gaming

Jonathan Leistiko is the game designer for The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e (He also did most of layout.). He’s the founder/organizer of the Austin, TX branch of Protospiel: Protospiel South. He co-owned and co-ran a retail game store in State College, PA for 5 years; co-designed and co-published Inevitable (the first successful board game on Kickstarter); worked as a Game Developer for Steve Jackson Games; designed and posted over 120 free print-and-play games on http://invisible-city.com; has four published board games to his name: Inevitable (Dystopian Holdings), The Isle of Doctor Necreaux (AEG), Pressure Matrix (AEG), and Blank White Dice (WizKids); and designed one iOS game: Tumblewords (Minicore Studios).

Desirée Lynne Ward is the art director and editor for The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e (and general process wrangler). Desirée teaches Humanities classes at a community college, and she’s also a creative writer and freelance editor. She has always loved board games, but it was only a few years ago, through meeting Jonathan, that she learned about the great, wide modern board game market. Spending so much time with a game designer rubs off on a person, and she’s dabbled a little bit with some of her own designs. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see one of her games published someday. Meanwhile, she is writing a novel and excited to see The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e get made.

Cole is one of our three cats. He's very helpful, as you can see...

  • Invisible City, LLC is a new company, and Kickstarter helps us gain exposure and connect with the wonderful Kickstarter community.

  • Stretch goals! With Kickstarter, we’re hoping to knock out enough stretch goals to offer a deluxe version of the game.

  • Community input: We love the way enthusiastic backers come together, offer suggestions, and contribute their positive energy to board game projects. That’s why we’re offering some backer-created social goals.

  • Limited printing: At this time, we don’t have plans to release this game in retail. We will sell extra copies from our website, and we may have later printings if the demand is there.

Risks and challenges

This is the first time we've published a game (*). We're learning a lot, and we're doing our best to ensure that The Island of Doctor Necreaux 2e will be great! Even so, we could make mistakes. That said: We're using well-established printing and shipping partners and we've done our research. (Huge thanks to James Mathe and Jamey Stegmaier for sharing their wisdom!) Our expectations and goals are realistic. We're on track to succeed and produce a good, fun, quality game for you.

* Technically, this is Jonathan's second Kickstarter project. His first was Inevitable. Inevitable has the interesting distinction of being one of the first successful board games on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dystopianholdings/inevitable-dystopian-tabletop-gaming/description – The board game industry has changed significantly since Inevitable succeeded 7 years ago (Jonathan says: “Back in my day, we didn’t *have* stretch goals!”) and this is a very different team, so it's far more honest to say we're (mostly) new to this than to "puff up" our past success.

Art, Layout, and Rules:
All of our art (except the "your likeness in the game" cameos) is ready to roll. All of the layout is done. The rules and components are thoroughly play tested and in their near-final form. Any of these can (and will likely) be tweaked in response to feedback from you – our backers – but you won't be waiting for us to finish play testing before the game goes to print.

Shipping:
Shipping to the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe is logistically challenging, so we're doing what any sensible people would do: We've found an expert and made it their problem. We've partnered with Justin Bergeron, who comes highly recommended by Jamey Stegmaier. We're confident we'll be able to serve Australia, Canada, Europe, and the U.S.A. at reasonable prices and in a reasonable time frame.

Possibly Going Over Budget or Missing our deadline:
We've crafted a detailed budget and we're confident we'll deliver on-time and in budget. But crazy things could happen: Unexpected production or shipping costs, disasters, etc... In the instance of any delay, act of nature, etc., we promise to keep you informed and updated as we work hard to make sure the game gets to each and every one of our much appreciated backers.

We take our relationship with you very seriously. Arguably, it's the most important part of this project. We have an amazing-fun-wonderful-awesome roster of games in our queue that we want to share with you. We want to earn your confidence – to believe in us and our ability to deliver on our promises – so we can bring you great games in the future. We're in this for the long haul, and we hope you are too. :)
