Seders & Cigars: A History of Jews in Tampa, Finishing Funds
Seders & Cigars is a documentary that will preserve and expand the narrative of the history of Jews in Tampa.
Seders & Cigars is a documentary about the history of Jews in Tampa. Jews have played a prominent role in Tampa since the 1880s and helped to build the city alongside other immigrants from Spain, Cuba and Italy.
For the last seven months my team and I have interviewed many members of our community, Jews and non-Jews, including a number of folks in their 80s, 90s and even a centenarian. Their stories and insights are precious treasures that we cannot afford to lose to history.
To that end, the goal of Seders & Cigars is to preserve and expand the narrative of the Jewish experience in Tampa and here’s how you can help. In order to complete the film, we need $8,000 in finishing funds and here's where that money will go.
We still need to film about six more interviews, that will help to tie the story together.
And then there’s post production. This includes editing, color correction, and animation for the opening title sequence. That’s the biggest chunk of change. And finally, we will need original music. Any remaining funds will help to cover the cost of distribution and film festival submission fees.
So what’s in it for you in addition to the personal satisfaction of sponsoring an independent film and helping to preserve a unique slice of history for future generations? Some very cool tchotchkies. There are vintage Tampa postcards, a special Seders & Cigars cooking spice blend, and my favorite – the Seders & Cigars cookbook, a compilation of family recipes, anecdotes and photographs collected from those we’ve interviewed.
So please take a look at the rewards, find the package that works for you, and a sheynem dank for your support, you big macher you. Oy, such a mensch!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge in creating this film was starting production with very limited funding. As a filmmaker, I believe that the doing of thing is what is important, so I did. By meeting people in the community, building relationships and trust, what started with a shoestring budget, has revealed personal stories and connections that weave a richer tapestry than I could have possibly imagined. The next challenge, once the project is completed, is to maintain that momentum and share this story with as broad an audience as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
