In Emergence, players act as Operatives for either the Artificial Intelligence security forces or the Human rebels. Since the Humans are in the minority, they know who their fellow teammates are and employ deception and persuasion to hide their true identities. On the other hand, the A.I. players use their deduction skills to identify their fellow teammates and to root out the Humans. However, knowing is simply not enough, you must still accomplish your objective. Trust no one.

The tiles come in sets of two (Four total).

The Bio-Electro Tile. This just in: one of our field teams has reported the sighting of a highly peculiar ******* location. This is unlike anything we have seen before. Our specialist in the labs are identifying it as some sort of location hybrid left over from the remnants of the war. After sending agents to gather the data produced there, it seems like ******* can produce both sets of data we need. We need more time to study the implications of this hidden gem. However, you must not allow the humans to obtain information about this new find.

The Kick-starter Exclusive Bio-Electro hex is one of shared resources. You are able to pick up both bio and electrical data if available and are able to replenish both as well. Although not official in any City, we encourage you to play around with custom city configurations and see how it fits.

The Teleport Tile: Attention Agent: Please use extreme care while engaging with the infrastructure unit set up to assist you in transportation. Use of this piece of equipment will expedite your travels and reach your targeted areas sooner; however, consider yourself cautioned. This equipment works on Simultaneous Space-Time, but the science behind the technology was lost during the war, as have our means to produce more of them. We have reason to believe that the humans know of this technology, you must not allow them to discover the location. Safe passage is not guaranteed.

The set of teleporter tiles will allow you to jump from one tile to another. This allows for the creation of isolated islands, wider cities, and small pockets of plentiful resources that can be separated to create some interesting gameplay dynamics. Although not official in any City, we encourage you to play around with custom city configurations and see how it fits.

 Emergence, the boardgame comes with:

  • 24 Hex Tiles
  • 60 Data Blocks
  • 6 Allegiance Cards
  • 6 Playerboards
  • 6 Operative Meeples
  • 6 Action Markers
  • 1 Leader Card
  • 1 Knowledge Tracker
  • 6 Exchange Rate/Quick Rules Cards
  • 85 Knowledge Tokens
  • 1 Assimilate Knowledge Slip-Box
  • 1 Operative Manual [ Rulebook ]
  • 4 [ Kickstarter Exclusive ] Optional Hex Tiles

HERE you can download a work in progress version of the rulebook (this version is not finalized and is subject to change) or you can see this PREVIEW.

We love deduction games like Mafia, The Resistance, Avalon, and Werewolf ... but wanted to expand where they left off.  In Emergence,  your individual moves and strategic decisions on the gameboard matter as much as your persuasion skills.

Teamwork. You won’t get very far in Emergence without Teamwork and Co-operation with the people around you. While traversing the board gathering the data you need to win might sound easy at first, it’s a task made difficult by the post-humans in your midst working to sabotage your efforts and sow paranoia through your team. At the start of the game, one or two members of your team will be selected at random, in secret, to play the role of these human saboteurs. Exposing and outmaneuvering these saboteurs will test your ability to work as a team and will demand you to make the most out of the scarcest resource of all--trust.

Deception. Whether you’re playing as the A.I. trying to eradicate humanity once and for all, or the human-augment working to thwart them, Emergence will tax your cunning. Spreading misinformation, painting blame on another, and creating chaos are all methods the humans will use to prevent the A.I. from accomplishing their goals. The A.I. players work in direct opposition--inquisitors on the search for truth and an unobstructed path to victory.

Resource Collection. Resources in the form of data, both raw and compiled, are your primary tools to undermine your enemies and achieve victory. At the start of every round, all players simultaneously declare their augmentations--blue for a mechanical alignment and green for biological. These augmentations determine what tiles you can gather data from, where you can move, and even which players you can interact with. This makes the simple act of moving around the board and gathering resources highly strategic and every move you make has repercussions that reach every corner of the board.

Emergence consists of two teams. Scaling with the amount of players, the A.I. are the majority while humans are the minority. At the start of the game, each player will randomly draw an allegiance card to determine their team.

The objective of the game is to move around the board collecting data blocks (resources) that can then be compiled (converted) into knowledge tokens. These knowledge tokens can be assimilated to score victory points for your team, or to perform player actions.

Above is the suggested starting game board arrangement; however, once players are more familiar with the game they are encouraged to try different tile arrangements. The black tile is the start tile. The green and blue tiles are data (resource) tiles. The white tiles let you compile data into knowledge tokens. Finally, the grey tiles let you turn in your knowledge for victory points.

At the beginning of each round, all players simultaneously select an action and augmentation. Then, on their turn, players move one tile and may perform the action they selected. But be wary, some actions require precious knowledge tokens to perform.

Tile actions let you interact with the game board:

  • Activate: Perform the action associated with the tile you're on
  • Boost: Move an extra tile
  • Replenish: Add one data block to a data tile

Player actions let you interact with other players:

      • Hack: Steal another player's data blocks
      • Spy: Look at another player's allegiance card
      • Terminate: Steal another player's data & knowledge and send them back to the start tile

You can win the game in two ways. First, if all the data blocks on the map run out, the game ends and the Humans win! Second, one team reaches their required victory point total by assimilating enough knowledge tokens.

While we have reached our baseline funding goal (thanks to all our beautiful backers) we have a slough of ideas we're excited to add to the final copy of Emergence. As funding continues over our baseline, stretch goals increase the overall quality of the game for everyone! Each backer's copy of Emergence will include all the stretch goals we reach by campaign-end. We have some exciting ideas for stretch goals so let's unlock some of them!

While all unlocked stretch goals will be included in the game, all designs are subject to change.

Liminal Games was founded by a group of friends that shared a love of board games, and set out on an endeavor to create a game we could all have fun with together.

We always enjoyed playing most board games, however, choosing one to play was always difficult, as we had differing opinions on what made a game fun. We began working on Emergence to try to create a unique experience that incorporated what we thought were the most exciting aspects of board game design.

There were many challenges throughout the project, but the most obvious was striking the right balance. We needed to tweak the different mechanics of the game, to make something that encompassed our vision, was easily accessible to new players, while also maintaining the complexity to retain the interest of seasoned veterans. The game underwent countless revisions, and we saw many different aspects come and go.

The final product is very different than the initial concept we began with, but we believe we currently have a game that represents our vision, and our best efforts to get there. At this point, we aren’t sure where our journey will take us.

After reading tons of blogs and conducting lots of research we are confident to say we have figured out the most reliable and cost-effective way to get Emergence into your hands. We are shipping games to fulfillment centers in US, Canada, and Europe to reduce customs fees & VAT and to keep shipping prices low.

We have decided the subsidize the shipping cost for each backer. Part of your $39 pledge goes towards shipping for your game. For US Backers we are able to offer FREE SHIPPING, and for EU countries and Canada the total shipping cost will be $10. We will ensure that there is NO additional VAT or custom fees so when you receive your game there is no unexpected additional costs.

*Unfortunately we weren't able to figure out an affordable solution to send board games to the rest of the world. But please email us and we can put you on a list once we figured out shipping for other countries. We are currently working with Ideaspatcher, AmazonUK, Unicorn Games in Australia and Blackbox for fulfillment.

Update: 4-4-16 We were able to make Australia shipping happen! Just USD$10 for shipping.

We ourselves love gathering at local game stores and we want to support your business. If you are a retailer, we are happy to offer you copies of Emergence that includes all stretch goals.

To help you succeed and be the go to place. We will limit initial distribution of Emergence to one local game store per city and one online retailer per country. We will make sure that you receive the game three months before we release regular retail games into distribution. The latter will happen at least 3 months after the initial release.

If you're a retailer, please email us at contact@emergenceboardgame.com

Risks and challenges

While we do recognize that this is our first largescale board game project, we believe we have properly done our homework. Thanks to the help of the Stonemaier Games blog and online resources we are prepared for every part of the kickstarter process.

In order to prepare for this project we created a smaller, for-fun Kickstarter to help us learn the in's and out's of the platform. As you can see we are responsive and communicate with 100% transparency.

In terms of Digital Projection: We have already printed multiple copies of our game with the correct Pantone color sets. We are confident that our artwork will be handed over to the manufacturer with no delays.

In terms of Manufacturing: While we have many quotes and have finalized our components, we have narrowed the search down to two industry leaders: PandaGM and WinGo Games. We have had multiple conversation with fantastic account managers and are ready to go once we receive funding.

In terms of Shipping: As previously described in our shipping section, we are sending bulk shipments to various distribution centers to reduce VAT and custom costs. We are working with some industry proven leaders in Ideaspatcher and Blackbox (the Team behind Cards Against Humanity) to get Emergence delivered to your doorstep.

In terms of Refunds: If for any reason, up to 30 days after campaign end, you need a refund, we are happy to give you a full refund no questions asked. As active backers ourselves, we understand life happens!

Our dedicated team is absolutely committed to tackling this challenge, and will work with our utmost effort and care on delivering on our promise. That, after all, is our greatest priority.
