The name of the watch is a tribute to the Venetian submarine called Nereide which was built in the Royal Arsenale in 1913 and commissioned to the engineer De Bernardis by the Royal Navy during the First World War. The timepiece recalls the design of WWI submarines and bears a pressure of 20 atmospheres, which is about 200 meters below the sea level. The PVD version evokes the color of the hull, while the bronze indices and hands recall the tachymeters and pressure indicators of the submarine itself.
The Republic of Venice was a sovereign state and a maritime republic in northeastern Italy, which existed for a millennium between the 8th and the 18th century. It was a leading European economic and trading power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Venice was a pioneer in glassblowing technology in Europe and made glasses, goblets, pitchers, dishes, bottles, vases, mirrors, jewelry, candelabra and decorative products of very high quality. From the thirteenth century Venetians produced delicate, carefully blown sand–glasses as a time–keeping device for mariners. In particular, the continual search for innovation, the production of machinery and small mechanisms helped make Venice famous in the past as a district of precision manufacturing.
We produced many samples in order to find the most experienced watch manufacturer to rely on for this project. The one we have chosen has produced luxury watches for well known brands. Quality is our priority. Every single stage of the production process is carried out with care and attention.

Our main priority is to make our most demanding customers proud of wearing a Meccaniche Veneziane timepiece. For this reason we just use the finest components and materials on the market. Here is an overview:
Meccaniche Veneziane Nereide watch is made of 316L stainless steel that is a molybdenum-alloyed steel. We have chosen this material because of its high resistance and reliability. This is why it’s much appreciated also in marine environments. Therefore, corrosion will no longer be a problem
Our timepieces are powered by Cal. MV044 based on the Miyota 821A, a self-winding mechanical movement (from Japan’s Citizen Watch Company) that is considered one of the most reliable on the market.
The caliber has been improved thanks to a CNC solid brass rotor manufactured in Venice (Italy), where all movements are inspected. Brass is heavier than steel or aluminium, thus it enables a faster loading. The Cal. MV044 is based on the Miyota most decorated movement that is regarded as very accurate and reliable caliber.
Stones or jewels were employed in the watch industry to reduce friction between metal gears so that a watch can work longer. Rubies are used because their hardness on the mohs scale similar to the one of diamonds.
Sapphire glass has extraordinary mechanical properties but it’s also very difficult to process as it requires very high temperatures, extreme pressures a long manufacturing times. Sapphire glass is created by crystallizing corundum, or aluminum oxide, at temperatures of 4000° F and then by molding the mixture into clear disks. The last stage consists in cutting them to the proper crystal size in order to make them suitable for the watch case.
This crystal is widely employed in high-end watches thanks to its resistance. As a matter of fact, it can only be scratched by diamonds.
Nemoto & Co. Ltd. and RC TRITEC Ltd. set up a joint venture which is the licensed manufacturer and exclusive distributos for Swiss Super-LumiNova® Photoluminescent Pigments. We decided to apply pigment C1 to every single watch.
All the types of leather used are from Veneto and Tuscany, two well known Italian tannery districts boasting a long tradition. Therefore, thanks to the expertise of local and skilled artisans we provide soft, comfortable and durable straps. We just use leathers obtained with traditional methods, as no chemicals and artificial colorings are employed.
We believe that every detail is important in order to fully satisfy our customers and the packing plays an important role as well. Thanks to the long expertise of local artisans, we have created a box made of solid walnut wood destined to last. It is not just a container but an object recalling the long artisan tradition of Friuli Venezia Giulia, one of the districts associated with the excellence of “Made in Italy”.
Our view of a diver watch is a timepiece suitable for both elegant occasions and sport activities. For this reason every Nereide watch is provided with a fine leather strap as well as a comfortable stitched silicone strap.
The leather straps we offer have a unique look, but silicone ones also offer many advantages. Silicone is a light weight, extremely strong, elastic, non-absorbent material, perfect for diving.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP?
We are currently designing a Swiss Made upgrade of the Nereide, after a few weeks of drawing, we are proud to show the Swiss Made version of the Nereide. In order to bring to life the first prototypes, we need your help. Swiss producers charge very high fees for moulds that will be required as the inner structure of the case will be totally changed.
Furthermore, we are going to use a high beat Swiss Made caliber, which will be customized in terms of daily accuracy (variance between -+10sec/day) and power reserve (42h instead of 38h). Although the movement technical drawings are ready, in order to produce 5 working prototypes of the movement, we need to produce new moulds to process the components tailor made for us.
Here are more details on the Swiss movement we will be using for the next generation of the Nereide.
We have already produced a limited number of Nereide watches, we are now ready to start a higher scale production. For this reason we will avoid any delay connected with the sampling stage. Once the campaign will be over we will provide constant updates regarding the status of production. Before shipping every watch will be carefully tested in our headquarter. All the Nereide watches will be on your wrist by the end of December 2017.
Do I need to change the battery? The battery of the watch will no longer be an issue for you. The MV044 caliber is an automatic movement that is powered by the moves of your wrist.
Why have you chosen a Japanese movement instead of a Swiss ETA 2824? Japanese movements are as reliable as any ETA movement. We have decided to go with Miyota in order to keep our timepiece affordable. Instead of merely buying and installing an already made movement we have decided to improve the appearance and the functionality by replacing the standard rotor with a tailor made one.
When will my card be charged? Kickstartar doesn’t work like an e-commerce in fact your card will be charged 3-5 days after the campaign ends, only if it has been fully funded.
Will my watch be warranted? All the Nereide watches will be insured for up to a year after the end of the fulfillment. Of course it is not possible to warrant watches which have been damaged directly by backers.
Are the Stretch Goals extended to all backers? Of course. All backers will benefit from the Stretch Goals, regardless of the contribution date.
Who is your express courier? DHL will take care of your delivery, they are the best in the field so you will not have any issue with them. If so we are always here to help you.
Risks and challenges
Before launching on Kickstarter we produced a very small stock to test the market. Feel free to look online for product reviews made by super early adopters who had tested the Nereide for 3-4 months. We proved to have the skills to manufacture high quality and reliable timepieces.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
