Know Orchestra is seeking to bring its original show to children who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to hear it. Through Kickstarter funding, five schools in underserved communities will be able to host concerts by Know Orchestra without any cost to them.
Know Orchestra’s shows for children emphasize active participation and audience engagement. Students will be asked to help the ensemble count the meter of a waltz, speak words in rhythm, and move in different ways to music. Child-friendly musical content will include train music and the story of Ratty the Musical Rat. The idea of theme and variation will be explored in a segment which encourages the audience to sing, laugh, and listen carefully to different ways “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” can be interpreted. The audience will leave the performance with a better understanding of orchestral instruments and be inspired to continue their exploration of the wonderful world of music.
The five public schools already on board with us and who will benefit if we reach our goal are:
1. Eliot School in the North End
2. Roger Clap Innovation School in Dorchester
3. Haynes Early Education Center in Roxbury
4. James Otis School in East Boston
5. Curley K-8 in Jamaica Plain
If we EXCEED our goal, and yes we are optimistic, we will be able to bring our interactive show to even more deserving and underserved schools in the Boston area. We already have a waiting list of interested schools, so your support is not only appreciated by us, but by hundreds of kids and families who will enjoy the experience of a live musical performance at their schools.
Risks and challenges
Weather and health permitting, we fully expect to be able to fulfill all our reward promises. Given that our live show happens during snow season, we realize that road conditions might interfere with keeping our live show date, but only if nearby towns have declared a snow emergency will we postpone the show to a later date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
