You must be as passionate as I am about children's books if you checked out my Kickstarter page. Thank you for visiting. Here is a little about me and my project.
I live up in northern California, in the small town of Arcata. We are fortunate to have Humboldt State University, where I completed a BA in Fine Arts. Humboldt County is the gorgeous setting where my first book begins. The beautiful redwoods become a key component in the story, making it a fun aspect for me because I'm a native of this area.
After college I married and moved to San Diego, California where I worked as a drafter for a civil engineering firm. Returning to college when my children were mostly grown, I completed the teaching program from Northern Arizona University and acquired a teaching credential.
I've been a classroom teacher (Kindergarten and 4th grade) and an art teacher, in both public schools as well as a charter school in Yuma, Arizona. Also, I taught art at a public school in Carlsbad, California, and privately for Monart School of the Arts in San Diego, California for three years.
I have five children, 4 sons and a daughter, who are grown now, and two very sweet grandsons. I've always enjoyed children and my dream of writing a children's book has finally been realized in this project.
The idea for this book actually started when I received a generous gift from my brother of a small, antique roll top desk. It just felt right to finally start writing.
It's a rhyming story inspired by the roll top desk, featuring mystery, fantasy and adventure. It takes young readers through a thought provoking journey that I hope will inspire loyalty and friendship in their own lives. I use real places, but with imagined characters and events to engage their thinking and curiosity.
This book is the first one in a series of four stories that are already written. These needed funds are to finish the illustrations which are being done by a capable young artist. I felt my energy needed to be focused on the writing, so that is why I contracted Noelle. As you can see from the example art posted, she is very gifted and captured what I was looking for in the artwork.
As an extra incentive to this project, there is the possibility of being selected for a full length animated film produced at the publishers expense. My publisher has a promotion, for this year only, to produce a film that will be distributed nationwide. I am very excited to have the opportunity to be in their pool of authors. Fortunately, the book only needs to be started to be considered.
I launched this project December 7, 2018, with a completion date of 8 to 10 months if all goes well.
Following is an excerpt from the beginning of the book:
Imagine a small lumber town up in the northern frontier; the time is 1937, during the summer of that year. It begins in California, not far from Humboldt Bay, several players and places you will meet along the way. As for me, you will get to know me in a paragraph or two, after I introduce you to some of the people that I knew.
If you are intrigued, please consider contributing to this project. Thank you
Risks and challenges
This book has already been accepted by Christian Faith Publishing. The reason for this Kickstarter account is to fully fund the illustrations and help offset publishing fees associated with and for this endeavor. This project was launched on December 7th of 2018, using funds already secured, so that the preliminary work on the book by the publisher can commence.
I have a talented artist who has agreed to provide the illustrations. She has already completed 7 of those illustrations without a contract. I now have a contract with her so that the process can continue.
My own limited funds are tied up with getting the book published and marketed, so this is the last piece I require. The subsequent books in this series I hope will be funded by the proceeds of this book, which will make this seed money vital for future publishing.
I am confident that this last piece can be funded with your generous help. Thank you so very much.
