My name is Rodney Thompson and I will be producing ten Alla Prima portraits to submit to galleries in the Austin area. I have been studying the Alla Prima technique for several years and take advantage of any opportunities to learn more and refine my skill.
One of the opportunities is attending a five day workshop taught by Casey Baugh in Brooklyn, New York. Baugh is a master at portraiture and his workshop on the Alla Prima techinique will provide me with greater knowledge, a greater skill set and a higher level of confidence to produce the ten paintings.
There will be live demos performed by Baugh as well hands on instruction during the five days. He will teach us painting techniques using live models as well as photo references. Additionally, he will go through the steps of color, value, edge, drawing and how to align these elements into a unified compostion.
This course will increase my ablities to produce a higher quality of work to help further my career. To make this come to fruition I will have to pay for the workshop, hotel, transportation and supplies for the workshop and for the ten paintings.
Creating this project is not only a study in painting techniques but a process of discovering a deeper understanding of my subjects and the emotions and feelings they're evoking. I strive to portray emotion and humanity at it's rawest form and this will be an invaluable investment in myself and in my work.
Below are samples of my work in Alla Prima and in charcoal as well as the "Day Of The Dead" piece that will be availble for prints.
Risks and challenges
I think any challenges that may present themselves will be in the form of time and overcoming little obstacles that my current knowledge of painting gives me. I have set a strong goal to finish and I wish to have it completed by May to submit to galleries. I have faith that this workshop and my growing skill will help me find a clearer path and more thorough process to execute the work that I want to create.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
