It's time, you guys.
The past three years have been an incredible adventure for me as a solo performer. Armed with just my ukulele and a microphone, I’ve performed at a variety of venues and events throughout the world, connecting with people at comedy clubs, variety shows, literary events, and coffee shops. I love connecting with a crowd solo, and I’ll keep performing solo for many years to come, but it’s time to create something different.
It’s time for my show to get… big. As a child, my desire to perform stemmed from an early obsession with musicals, concert dvds, and psychedelic music videos. This Kickstarter is an opportunity to bring all of these elements together to create a totally unique and theatrical experience. Welcome to “Studies Have Shown,” my new show and concert film.
Studies Have Shown will include a full band, visuals, thematic transitions, props, silliness, dancers, and theatricality. Think Stop Making Sense meets Lemonade. It's part musical, part rock show, part theatre, and all me.
This Kickstarter is the only way to guarantee your tickets to the San Francisco debut and filming of Studies Have Shown, which will be held at DNA Lounge on March 2nd, 2017. The whole evening will also be filmed, and all Kickstarter contributors will get a download of the finished concert film.
Why, indeed? Well, there are two main reasons why I want to create this show. Let's call them The Need to Eat and The Artistic Itch.
The Need to Eat is about the practicality of the biz. To keep moving forward and to get on bigger stages, I need a bigger show. Having a full band could open doors to get a good opener spot on a major tour, get into more festivals, play bigger venues when I tour, and get more press.
The Artistic Itch is the most important. I love playing solo shows, but my real passion, and I believe, strength, is being the front person for a band. I love rocking out and feeling the energy of a crowd on their feet and losing their minds. I love feeling the power of the song explode when the right drum fill swoops the melody to its climax. And I love being on stage with badass musicians who are just as invested in the music as I am. Now don't fret, lovers of the Rachel Lark solo acoustic show. I will DEFINITELY still play plenty of solo shows. But I need to express this music the way I've always heard it in my head, with a full band and the epic stage antics to accompany it.
I heard you got a record deal, though...?
That's true! I DID get a record deal. The lovely people at not a cult are supporting me and my first studio album, They’ve Done Studies. I’m currently in pre-production with my new bandmates, and we’ll be in the studio in December. This is all very exciting!
But it's 2016, not 1996, which means that my record deal covers recording and printing costs of my album, but not touring and live production costs. To bring this new sound and show to life, I still need your support. In other words, this Kickstarter turns this opportunity to make a cool album into a long-term opportunity to form a band and take an incredible show on the road.
Where's the money going?
Lots of places. The show itself requires infrastructure. I'll be purchasing a projector and creating costumes, set elements, and video to be used in the show. I'll also be hiring several other performers, and I’ll be paying my fellow musicians and crew to come on tour with me. And then there’s the filming and editing of the concert video itself. Check out the breakdown below! We’re gonna need every penny to pull this off.
The Tour Path
We'll be hitting the road in June. Exact cities and dates will be confirmed soon after this campaign ends, but in the meantime, here are the cities we're hoping to hit.
San Francisco, CA
Los Angeles, CA
New Orleans, LA
Ok, now let's chat about these rewards...
SO MANY awesome awards. Yeah, you can get CD's and stuff, but let's talk about some of the other new experiences and super-fan swag that I've introduced!
Studies Have Shown * 1 Ticket to the Bay Area premiere of Studies Have Shown & 1 Signed CD * $40
I can't wait! Come see me and my band at the first ever debut of these songs and all the new live elements. The show will be at DNA Lounge on March 2nd, 2017, and it will also be filmed, so you'll be a part of the magic that will turn into many live music videos!
They've Done Covers * 1 Ticket to the ONE-TIME-ONLY live performance of Rachel Lark's acoustic hip-hop covers * $60
For my last Kickstarter, I made a stretch goal of creating a solo acoustic hip-hop cover album. I had so much fun creating it. But I also felt like the songs would really be rad if I played them with a fiddle, upright bass, and cajon. So I'd like you to hear this dream become a reality at Awaken Cafe on April 20th, 2017. This will only happen ONCE so don't miss it! One ticket to Studies Have Shown included.
The Hipster Special * Signed Vinyl & Song Book * $60
For $60 you can like Rachel Lark before she's cool!
The Acid Special * Signed Vinyl & Rachel Lark Blotter Art * $80
Get heady with this special package that includes a limited run, framed, special edition Rachel-Lark-At-The-Hot-Springs Blotter Art. No acid included, my friends! This is just a souvenir to remind you of my favorite combo...
Date Night * 2 Tickets to Studies Have Shown, 1 Signed Album, 1 Song Book, 1 Jar of Olives * $100
Bring a date! Make it great!
The Cover Lover * Pick a cover and I'll cover it * $300
I will cover a song of your choosing. Any genre, any time period. Just keep it under 6 minutes and I'll do my best to do it justice.
The Co-Creator * Prompt a Rachel Lark Song * $600
You give me 1-4 words and I will write a song inspired by those words and include them in the song somewhere. Many of my songs have been written this way, including several songs that will be on the next album, and a song you might remember from my last Kickstarter...
The Serenade * A Solo Rachel Lark House Show * $1,000 I'll perform a 90 minute acoustic performance at your home, or wherever!
The Show * A Full-Band Rachel Lark House Show * $2,000
My band will play at your house party, or event, or wherever. Book the band that made the album!
A Three Day Tour * You gotta read this one through... * $3,000
If I were you, I'd be most excited about this one. For $3,000 I will lead you and up to 19 of your friends on a 3-day hot springs trip. Included in this trip will be one full acoustic Rachel Lark concert for you and your party, while you are soaking in a hot spring. One campfire meal included! Some things you should know about this...
- My boyfriend, Andrew, and I are obsessed with hot springs. We've been to dozens this year alone, and we know about a lot of spots that you and your friends might not find on your own, and in my personal opinion, they're some of the most incredible and beautiful spots in the world. Let me show you these gems!
- This trip can be customized to your desires, limitations, and geography. We can include hiking, sightseeing, cliff jumping, whatever else you're into. We can totally glamp it up if you want, and visit spas and have fancy dinners. It will be a full, 3-day outing into nature and I'll put together an itinerary after we've chatted on the phone and figured out what works for everyone.
- I will prepare and provide one campfire meal for this journey. (Note: I'm an AMAZING campfire chef!) However, the remaining food, and any transportation and accommodations costs will NOT be included.
- If you haven't done the math already, this works out to $150 a person for you and 19 of your friends. So get everyone together, pool your resources, and plan on an epic trip!
If I reach my goal before the end of the campaign, there are some other projects that your monies could enable. More about these if we get to this point...
- $23,693 90's Rock Acoustic Cover Album
- $26,693 Electronic LP
- $28,693 "The Middle East" An Educational Concept LP
- $31,693 A Music Video!
- $31,693 + I'm good. Spend your money on a cause you care about :)
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk I'm taking with this new direction is adding so many other moving parts at once. In the past, I've been a one-woman operation, which has been exhausting, but it's also meant that I'm in complete control. Building a team and bringing in other people is a necessary step for growth, but adding band members, collaborators, and other performers is scary, because I'll be working with other people who have their own lives, needs, creative desires, and schedules. I have a lot of trust in the people I'm working with, and I think that expectations are clear on all sides about what it will take to make the show and the album successful, but there's always a risk that accidents could happen, things could come up, and people might need to back out of the project. In that unlikely event, things will be postponed.
I picture a worst-case scenario situation being that the show has to be moved to a different venue or date after people on this Kickstarter have already bought tickets. If that happens I will do my best to re-schedule it at a time that seems most likely for people to be able to make it, and if people can't make it, I will find alternate rewards to compensate for the ticket. I don't think I'll be in a position to issue refunds.
That said, I believe these risks are very slim. Hopefully those of you who have supported me in the past and know my music know that I’m a doer and finisher. I complete the projects that I say I will, because deadlines are the secret creative fuel upon which I depend. Thank you for trusting me and believing in what I do. I won’t let you down!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
