Chiari Malformation is a brain abnormality where the bottom part of the brain (cerebellum) crowds the skull cavity blocking cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow into the spinal canal. Many are unaware of the disease despite the possibly that it could affect as many a 1 in 1,000 people. Since the flow effects the neurological system the symptoms of the ailment can run the gamut from severe headaches, to stomach pains, to much more esoteric and complex issues. The only potential cure is brain surgery; however, results are far from uniform and may not always be the best course of action.
My son was diagnosed with the disease over a year ago. As a parent of someone suffering through this I wanted to find a way to help. After one of our neurosurgeon visits my wife and I were drawing on a napkin trying to explain the disease. He said it helped him (not sure how as we both are terrible artists) and recommended that I produce a comic book explaining the disease. Since that is something that I have done, I agreed provided that he would help me write it.
So that is what we need help with. On my sons behest we want to create a comic book that explains the ailment and most importantly provides contact information for resources for those who need it. We have partnered with the key Chiari charities (ASAP, Conquer Chiari and CSF) to have their medical boards vet the information so we are accurate when we touch on the medical specifics.
Help us get these books in the hands of new patients, confused family members and the doctors and neurosurgeons that treat those with Chiari!
I have produced comic books for ESPN, with the Armed Forces Bowl as well as books through MiLB and will be donating my time and resources. We are starting this Kickstarter campaign to make people aware of the the disease and provide a basic explanation and resource guide.
The money generated will be used to cover the cost to hire professionals to develop the sequential pages, then ink, color and letter those pages. Finally we will print copies for distribution. After providing books for supporters the remainder of the print run will be given to the three charities listed above for their distribution and utilization.
We have some really interesting talent lending their visual voice to the project and we will be announcing these "guest stars" that will appear in the book over the next few weeks including a professional athlete.
Hopefully this is a project you are willing to support. Please share our link on any social media streams so that we can connect with as many people as possible that would like to learn more about Chiari Malformation and the associated issues.
Thank you for your time and support.
Risks and challenges
Developing the resources to fund the project is the number one challenge. We would love to fund the project privately ourselves but with medical bills mounting that is unrealistic right now.
We have a team in place ready to begin and we also have talented stand bys in case our initial team gets signed to a large production house assignment. The entire team have worked previously at either Marvel or DC Comics.
