End of Campaign update: Thanks to everyone who backed this project. Keep in touch through the various links below if you are interested in following development of this game. I am planning on releasing it on itch.io for free for those who would like to try it out or participate in alpha/beta testing. It should be available on itch.io March or April of 2018.
itch.io is a platform similar to Steam with a focus on developing indie games.
By the end of this year I hope to also submit the game to Steam.
The game is going through major changes and is already very different from what is seen in the videos on this kickstarter. I've added a fully functional quest system with NPC framework and am currently recreating the entire landscape. I may also change the name of the game to something more familiar because it seems "Makaran" causes too much confusion and mispronunciation. It was always a working title anyway.
From feedback that I've received during this campaign, I've realized that people are getting a very wrong impression of what this game is. To many people it appears to be "just another survival game" in the genre of games like Rust and Ark, but it is NOT a multiplayer game.
The closest comparison and my biggest inspiration is The Long Dark. This is a single player, "survival in isolation" game with story objectives, permadeath and gameplay similar to The Long Dark survival and story mode. The main focus is resource management and completing objectives at your own pace.
If you still want to support development of this project you can currently do so on Patreon.com or through itch.io when it is available. Perhaps I'll launch another kickstarter in the future but for now the plan is to get it available to playtesters on itch.io for free and on Steam in the near future. I'll be streaming development periodically on Twitch also.
Thanks again and I look forward to your feedback.
The Last Makaran is a survival exploration game where you take on the role of the last surviving member of a primitive tribe from another world. The Makarans near extinction by an invading force of insectoid creatures called the Formicans.
Hunt and forage for food and supplies, craft tools and weapons, build traps and defenses and survive in an inhospitable land as you strive to bring an end to that which destroyed your homeland.
The Last Makaran is created by Threshold Seven, a solo developer. My real name is Ryan. The name "Threshold Seven" is a term associated with a recurring theme of the seventh gateway or door to other dimensions in mythology. I compare it with crossing into the alternate reality of video games.
Development of the Last Makaran began about 2 years ago. I use Blender to create all the models and animations and UE4 as the game engine. I also composed the original music score using a combination of GarageBand, Audacity and Abelton.

During the kickstarter campaign I will be streaming the development process of The Last Makaran to answer questions, demonstrate gameplay and show the progress in development.
The primary reward for backing this project (at the $10 and up level) is an alpha "in progress" version of The Last Makaran soon after the kickstarter campaign has ended and a Steam key when the game is released on Steam. Anyone who receives the alpha version will also get access to subsequent updates to the game and the opportunity to take part in beta testing.
The initial release on Steam which is projected to be late 2018 - early 2019. Higher tiers receive more Steam keys which can be given to friends.
The highest backer tiers will also include your name carved in runes on a stone memorial in the game. There are ancient ruins in the world that you can visit to view the memorials, which tie into the aesthetics and history of the game world itself. At the highest tier you help choose the design if you wish.
Gameplay and Survival Mechanics:
To those acquainted with single player survival games, the initial mechanics are very familiar. You begin with no supplies and must forage as well as loot containers while avoiding enemies when you are still unarmed. Once you find or craft a suitable weapon you are ready to hunt and defend yourself. You then continue on your journey to put an end to the invading Formicans all while trying to survive in an inhospitable land. The Last Makaran is open ended and will allow you to survive for as long as you can even after completing all story objectives if you wish to see how long you can survive. Once the Formicans are exterminated they are no longer a threat, but getting rid of them comes with great risk. Your supplies dwindle with use and degradation over time. The native wildlife, which cannot be eradicated is always a threat.
Food and water is always an immediate concern. There are many different sources from which to sustain yourself, but they are spread sparsely and not always available.
The nights are dangerous and cold. A campfire, torch and animals hides help fend off the cold. Staying active also helps to keep warm but drains stamina and physical endurance.
In addition to the traditional hunger, thirst, stamina, body temp and overall health mechanics there are 3 more unique survival mechanics.
Physical endurance determines how rested or fatigued you are. Vigorous activity will cause fatigue faster while some edibles give an endurance boost. Taking care of all other survival needs first is essential to getting a good night's sleep.
Mushrooms can greatly effect your need to sleep. Some can keep you up all night while others make you drowsy.
Mental fortitude must also be moderated to prevent becoming too muddled to perform crafting tasks. Eat, drink, get enough sleep, stay out of trouble and you'll remain lucid, but neglect any of your survival needs and your mental fortitude will start to drop until you become muddled. Getting out of danger and taking care of all survival needs regains mental fortitude. If crafting is immediately necessary but you have become too muddled to do so, eating certain mushrooms will give a boost of mental clarity which will temporarily allow crafting again.
The nutrition mechanic is a system put into place to balance realistic survival with gameplay mechanics while also hindering food exploits. All foods satiate hunger a certain amount and also give back a portion of lost health. Gorging on food to regain health is possible until you are full but food cannot be relied on to regain all lost health all the time. If you eat too much and stay full for too long, you will become overfed which limits your ability to run and jump.
You can choose to go on a starvation diet, eating only just enough to stay alive to ration your dwindling food supplies. The compromise is that if you are too hungry for too long you will become malnourished, which limits your physical abilities as well as the amount you can carry and the damage you deal to enemies. Overall health also slowly degrades over time when extremely malnourished.
The crafting system is comprised of many unique items ranging from basic tools to advanced weapons, armor, survival items and fortifications.
Each item has a unique recipe and requires the proper materials and equipped tools to fashion.
Many items can be found already crafted around the map and in baskets that spawn random loot at the beginning of each new game. All items found can also be crafted from scratch.
Enemies and Wildlife:
The Formicans are your primary enemy. They have invaded your homeland and killed everyone you've ever known. Your main mission is to exterminate them and their queen.
The Antelope is a non aggressive and elusive creature native to your homeland. Take them down with an arrow or attempt to run them down to exhaustion with a spear. Their meat is a good food source and their hide can be cured and used to make warm clothing to help you survive the frigid nights and add damage mitigation to your armor set.
The Ostri is a grub-eating flightless bird of prey which becomes aggressive if you get too close. It uses its powerful claws to disembowel its prey. Days later it will return to feast on the maggots accumulating on the carcass.
The Tardigrade is a formidable beast that lumbers around the jungle searching for unsuspecting prey. It's tough to take down and can kill with a few swipes of its powerful claws. If you are brazen enough to hunt one you will be rewarded with copious amounts of tender meat.
More creatures big and small are in the works as well as some that can be tamed and trained as hunting companions and mounts.
Building and Fortification:
There are various items that can be built to help fortify an area. Fences can be placed around a perimeter and deadly traps can be set to defend choke points.
Existing huts and stone buildings can be used for shelter but craftable tents, huts and stone structures are in the works as well as an extensive tree house building system which will incorporate platforms and bridges to make a home safe from the dangers that lurk on the ground.
As the kickstarter is in progress I will be playtesting and working on new additions such as weather effects, tutorial and quest objectives and new items and building mechanics.
Please feel free to join in on the conversation and be part of the development process on www.twitch.tv/thresholdseven as I live stream during the kickstarter campaign.
Thank you for your consideration and for supporting The Last Makaran.
Risks and challenges
Before launching this kickstarter campaign I wanted to have a playable demo version of The Last Makaran complete that included most of the game mechanics. I have reached that goal and I am happy with the outcome.
The largest risk is that I may not have the "final release" version of the game completed by my goal of February 2019. Time flies, life gets in the way and taking on a game development project solo is no easy task.
I feel confident that I can reach this goal because after having already worked on the game for 2 years I know how much I can accomplish in that time.
The biggest hurdle that I foresee is the result of testing by other players during the alpha and beta testing stage. There may be unforeseen issues and new features that I may want to add that will take longer to complete than initially predicted.
The Last Makaran will be completed no matter what the circumstances unless I croak or the zombie apocalypse ensues. I have spent the last 2 years working on this project and I have no reason to stop until it is done. After release on Steam, I plan on updating the game as long as players still have interest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
