35mm film is being phased out and will be replaced by digital film projection by the end of this year. As you may have heard, many smaller theaters are being forced to shut down due to the costly conversion. In order for The Big Picture Theater to continue to operate as a movie theater, and provide a wide range of entertainment and cultural programming, we need to raise $20,000 to offset the $60,000 per screen conversion.
We have set our kickstarter.com goal at just $20,000 and vow that if we can raise half of what is needed to convert one of the theaters, we will finance the remaining costs and continue to fundraise to upgrade BOTH theaters. This will allow our community and patrons a much wider range of programming - such as; independent films, concerts and sporting events, while providing a quality experience in both theaters.
It's not about how much you can give, but how many folks are reached. We understand these are hard economic times, though if just half of the Mad River Valley community were to donate the cost of a single movie ticket and popcorn (roughly $10) we would meet or even exceed our goal.
Check out the New York Times piece about how other theaters are facing the same challenge.
We are committed to remaining a movie theater and hope you can please share this with your friends and help us reach our goal!
