MOTHER is a series of role-playing games created by Shigesato Itoi. Known for its irreverent humor, memorable music and unconventional take on the genre, the series has garnered a rabid cult following worldwide.
MOTHER, released in 1989 for the Nintendo Famicom (known as the Nintendo Entertainment System in the US), was a huge success, and is still looked back upon as one of the landmark games for the system. Being a hugely popular release in Japan, MOTHER received a soundtrack release.
This, however, was no ordinary video game soundtrack. Composers Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka (Super Mario Bros., Metroid) and Keiichi Suzuki (Tokyo Godfathers, Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman), with help from the likes of avant-garde composer David Bedford and film composer Michael Nyman, recorded several tracks from the MOTHER soundtrack with full orchestration and, in several cases, English vocals from various European musicians, including Louis Philippe, Jeb Million, The St. Paul's Cathedral Choir and a young unknown named Catherine Warwick.
The album has never had an officially licensed release outside of Japan.
That is, until now.
As lifelong fans of the MOTHER series, we have always wanted to see the soundtrack to one of our favorite games get an official release outside of Japan. These songs, like the game they come from, occupy a special place in our heart.
After over a year of detective work and negotiations, we finally came to an agreement regarding the price of licensing this album for an officially licensed vinyl release. The price, which includes not only the licensing and publishing but the manufacturing of the LP as well, is quite steep. In fact, it is more expensive than any project we have yet taken on.
This, however, did not deter us. We are fully committed to releasing this album so that MOTHER and Eathbound fans will finally be able to fully immerse themselves in the lush production of songs like "Bein' Friends," "Pollyanna," and "Wisdom of the World."
These songs will be remastered specifically for vinyl to ensure that they will sound the best they ever have. In addition, the deluxe gatefold packaging will be something that fans will be able to treasure forever.
We want to give this album the deluxe treatment it deserves by putting out a limited edition double LP set that everyone can treasure, but we need your help to make it happen. With the 25th anniversary of the MOTHER series having just passed, we felt that there was no better time to crowd source this project.
In addition, we are creating a digital liner notes booklet in conjunction with Fangamer to go along with the album. For the past few months, we have been tracking down the original artists that contributed to this album and collecting information for a "behind the scenes" look at this album. We've uncovered some real surprises here that you won't want to miss out on.
Finally, not only do we want to bring this album out, but we want this to be the first in a series of video game soundtracks. Given that MOTHER is our personal favorite series, it seemed logical to start at the beginning. We hope that the success of this release will open the door to more video game soundtracks getting legitimate releases.
NOTE: BECAUSE OF LICENSING RESTRICTIONS, WE ARE UNABLE TO OFFER THE ALBUM OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE.
After calculating all of the expenses related to the project, including licensing, artist royalties, publishing fees, and manufacturing, we found that we need to raise $42,000 to make this project a reality.
This breaks down as such:
- $37,000 for licensing, publishing fees, royalties and manufacturing of the LP
- $2,500 for perk manufacturing and shipping
- $2,500 for Kickstarter fees
All of the money that we raise during this campaign will go to making 2000 copies of a deluxe double LP set that MOTHER fans will truly enjoy. In addition, every penny that we raise after reaching our goal will go towards pressing more copies of the album. We want it to be so that as many people as possible can enjoy this album!
We have even lined up some really cool rewards to sweeten the deal! There are MOTHER inspired art prints, stickers, pins and, of course, copies of the album. Also, we are offering our Kickstarter backers 500 exclusive translucent red vinyl records. Get 'em while they're hot!
We want to thank you for taking the time to look at our page, and we hope we have conveyed how much of a passion project this truly is for us. Understand that if you help us get this project the funding it deserves, you will know that you helped create something truly special. Together, we can collect the eight melodies, defeat Giygas, and save the universe! So come on, sing along with us! “Take a melody...simple as can be...give it some words and a sweet harmony...”
A NOTE FROM THE ARTIST: Because this is a handprinted item, each will be unique and there will minor differences between each print. This item also includes a metallic overlay.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge we face is raising the funds to make this project a reality. We already have all of the licensing, production, and manufacturing lined up; all we have to do is get the money to make it happen. We are counting on you, fans of both MOTHER and great music, to help us. Without you, this project will simply not be possible.
Please understand that production delays can always happen with LP runs. We will be trying our best to get this LP manufactured and shipped by Winter 2015, but with the massive influx in record pressing these days, there is always the possibility of a delay.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
