Using slide film as unique photographic medium I intend to document the largest religious gathering in the world.
The Kumbh Mela is one of the most extraordinary displays of faith on Earth, a spectacular journey drawing tens of millions of people on the banks of the Gange river. Held every three years, this mass Hindu pilgrimage rotates in 4 holy cities: Haridwar, Allahabad, Nasik and Ujjain. This year event is the Maha Kumbh Mela, the main event held every 12 years in Allahabad.
I followed the previous 2 events focusing on the figure of the pilgrim and his journey. I've decided to use slide film to capture these events because it is a finite and independent photographic medium, a medium that allows me to observe the original image directly and without filters; something quite rare nowadays. I choose black and white because I feel less distracted by the overwhelming colors of India and i am able to isolate and concentrate more on the individual's journey.
I believe that by documenting such a unique gathering over 9 years will allow me to give a better perspective and vision over the idea of spirituality in a pilgrimage, individuality within the multitude.
I am aiming to complete my slide-film project and display the results in a installation and hopefully an exhibition which will include the three Kumbh Mela events. The sum I am aiming to raise is 5,250 dollars which will include the travel fees to India and the process and development of 240 rolls of black and white scala slide film.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The risks that may arise during this project are the normal risks that one expects to face going in India during a very densely populated gathering and living for three weeks in a tent on the bank of the Gange river.
I already had the chance to attend the previous two gatherings, in 2007 and 2010, and i feel confident that i can pull through any complications that i may encounter.I will be using more that 200 rolls of film so the danger of exposure to x rays in the airports and light leaks in the camera are always there, but its part of the challenge...
