Already more than two years in the making, Other Months began as the short film, February, which was writer/director Nick Singer’s student thesis at Wesleyan University. Energized by the finished short and its strong reception, and convinced there was much more left to explore in Nash’s story, Nick began work on July and November. These three installments—February, July, and November—make up the whole that is Other Months. July was filmed a little over a year ago and is complete. With parts one and two finished, only November, the third and final part of the trilogy, is left. November is scheduled to shoot at the tail end of this year. We are raising money for the production of November, and we need your help!
SYNOPSIS / THEMES / VISUAL STYLE
Nash is anxious, isolated, and directionless. He works as a plumber, marking time in a nondescript northeastern town. He dreams of becoming a writer, but never writes. He lingers—in bars, in nightclubs, in the arms of strangers—hungry for intimacy, for connection, yet is always left wanting. There is a deep disquiet in Nash, an undercurrent running beneath his inertia. In the heady rush of sex, in the ecstatic pulse of a dance floor, in the electric punch of a confrontation with death—in these access points to the animal—he finds a certain undeniable potency. These moments in turn excite, terrify, and—ultimately, inevitably—leave Nash with a profound longing. Nash is temporizing, unwilling to confront the overwhelming uncertainty of his life’s course. From fixing a flooded basement in February, to starting a summer romance in July, to reuniting with his family and ex-girlfriend in November, Other Months encompasses nearly a year in Nash’s young life.
Other Months is a character study, a tone poem, a headspace, a series of shorts, and a feature film.The film moves to the beat of its images as much as its story, utilizing a deliberate cinematic choreography to place us firmly inside of Nash’s head. We spend time with Nash, in the way that Nash spends time in the world.
February was an official selection of the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival, where filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Lena Dunham, and Benh Zeitlin premiered their first films. It also received a 5-star review from a local magazine:
“[February] is a lone wolf story presented in a series of cinematic sketches illustrating a day in the life of a young plumber. Opening with a dark and surreal sex scene, we follow the main character's search for human connection on the most basic level. Sex permeates the 11-minute film, from the thumping sounds our character hears above the basement floor while fixing a pipe, to the blowjob he receives in an alley outside of a booming nightclub. The highlight of the short is the beautifully-shot nightclub scene, reminiscent of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, featuring a song by electro giant Deadmau5—the divide between character and audience disappears as both are enveloped in sound and color. Other Months always has and always will be a micro-budget film, shot only with the extraordinary contributions of many people coming together and giving whatever they can. Regardless, filmmaking is an exceedingly expensive endeavor. We've budgeted out the shoot for November, and our Kickstarter goal is the absolute bare minimum of what we need to get this done:

Risks and challenges
The production of such an ambitious film presents any number of challenges. The largest for November in particular is that we've never shot in New York City before. Prices for insurance, transportation, locations, and equipment all skyrocket in the city, and logistical issues like feeding people, parking, and equipment storage all become much trickier. We have plans for all of these things—but we are ultimately dependent on the generosity of a large group of people as we are making this film on an absolute shoestring.
After the film is finished, the distribution will be an uphill battle. For a film like OTHER MONTHS, which sits outside the mainstream (some would say FAR outside the mainstream), there is always a question of how the film will be received. The project has a very promising track record so far—acceptance to a world-class film festival, and an enthusiastic five-star review. But there are ultimately no guarantees as to what will happen when the finished film reaches the desks of festival programmers. If the film takes time to get into festivals that will slow down the rewards process as well.
However, we are confident about the film so far and our ability to finish it with the support of this campaign.
