- 636 ski resorts
- 29,495 km of slopes
- 30 mountains
- One map
Hi, we're Lana and Stefan. We love the Alps, design and geography.
Stefan has been skiing his whole life. Then he moved to Hamburg, which is a port city and as flat as you can imagine. So he decided to buy a map with information about the ski resorts of the Alps for alpine moods in his apartment. But he could find none, anywhere. So we decided to design one ourselves.
We started sourcing some detailed height data. Then we inserted mountains, cities, roads borders and water.
And then we added the ski resorts, one by one, all 636.
We wanted to combine the design with useful information. Thankfully, Oliver and Peter from Skiresort.de allowed us to use their data. So we included the length of blue, red and black slopes, and the minimum and maximum height for each ski resort.
All the places on the map are spelt in their local language. The legend and titles are in English and German, with the main title also in French and Italian to include the majority of languages spoken in the Alps.
Iconic mountains like the Matterhorn, the Ortler or the Zugspitze shape our impression and geographic understanding of the Alps. Therefore, we decided to design 30 illustrations of the most marvellous mountains of the Alps. They are included sketchily in the map, but people from everywhere told us that they love the mountains so much that we also decided to offer them as high-quality prints. You can find all the mountains here: marmotamaps.tumblr.com
1 Map, four Editions
The 636 Edition
The first edition of our map. 1400 x 1000 mm. Limited to 636 copies. Individually numbered fine prints, marked with printing date and version number.
The Individual Edition
Your individual map. 1400 x 1000 mm. We will highlight up to five ski resorts and enter up to five new towns or cities, so you can personalize the experience of consulting the map.
The Flat Edition
Modern design is flat. We like that. So we removed all the height lines in the map. Now the map looks like a night sky with a lot of stars in it. 1400 x 1000 mm. This edition is limited to 10 copies, all hand-numbered.
The Rainbow Edition
If you have skied in Verbier, you will understand that a lot of skiers there have a certain hippie touch. To add to this spirit, we have designed the rainbow edition. Besides, we like the fact that it feels like a statement of tolerance. 1400 x 1000 mm. This edition is limited to 10 copies, all hand-numbered.
The map will be printed in high-resolution offset printing by one of the finest printers in Germany. We have looked at some proofs and are so excited to place the final order. We haven't decided on the paper yet, but it will definitely be matt paper of the finest quality that we can find. We will update you on the printing during the campaign.
We will ship the map in a 1100 x 10 x 10 mm cardboard tube. Each map will be protected by an additional layer of paper surrounding it. We will start shipping the map, which will make a perfect present, immediately after the campaign so that it is at your door before Christmas.
Each shipment will be trackable.
We have worked very hard for this map. Now we're so excited and hope you like it as much as we do. Thank you for your help.
Thank you, Iulii, Philipp, Oliver and Peter for lending your support for this project.
And a special thank you to Christopher & Caroline, who accepted that a map can sometimes be more important than eating and didn't freak out too much.
Risks and challenges
We have been in the design business for some years now and believe we have mitigated all major risks.
The challenge will be to send out the posters to you well before December 24, but we have taken steps to assure a safe and good delivery. We have found sources for packaging material and have negotiated deadlines with our printer. Besides, Stefan's brother will help us out in case we can't handle the shipping.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
