About this project
This campaign is to kickstart a production of Storyville the Musical. Book, Music and Lyrics by Jim Kilroy, Orchestrations by Tony award winner Larry Hochman (Book of Mormon). Storyville is about an 18 year old very light skinned Octoroon girl from Natchez, MS who is on her way to New Orleans in 1910. She looks around and realizes that she's as white as anyone on the train. She decides to try to pass as white, marry a rich white boy and live happily ever after. She almost succeeds.
Jim Kilroy on developing the characters and plot of Storyville:
"The characters more or less developed on their own, starting with the ingenue, Josie. I wanted an innocent girl who would pull at the heartstrings of the audience. But, she had to be brave to set out on her own and go to a big city (New Orleans) to seek her fortune, as it were. The rest of the characters just kind of fell into place as I outlined the plot. I had to give Edward some sort of infirmity, a club foot, to make him not popular with the girls even though he's brilliant and handsome. He was overly protected by his mother and it shows in his indecision when he has to make tough choices. The Judge, who blamed his wife for giving him 'a defective son' was modeled after a real judge in New Orleans. Lulu actually existed and Ivory was inspired by her real pianist."
I did extensive research reading every book I could find that described New Orleans in the early 1900's and was helped enormously by Pamela Arseneaux of the Historical New Orleans Collection. I hired William Martin, a Broadway director and Drama Desk nominee to be the dramaturg. His insight and suggestions were invaluable.
Five years ago we had the initial sit down reading and some months later we did a staged reading at Salem State University. After some rewriting we did another reading at the Hawthorne Hotel Grand Ballroom. At both readings I received very inciteful input from the audiences and did more rewriting.
Risks and challenges
The biggest obstacle that I can envision would be putting all of the pieces together to mount a successful workshop production. In my other careers (business man, composer, lyricist, etc.) I face challenges every day and I usually solve them. I look at problems as a challenge. My goal is to stage a quality workshop production which will inspire a major producer to invest in the show and stage either a Broadway or Off Broaday production.
