ARC Continuum is an action/adventure game set on a new sci-fi world rich with ancient history that has been violently occupied by the vicious alien Kasaar race. You take on the role of Hadrian, a regular Taraanian, who is trying to get by until a mysterious time traveler sets in motion a series of events that will change his life, and the planet's future forever.
Granted the ARC, a device of near godlike power, you gain control over time itself, granting you fantastical powers to slow, rewind or manipulate the flow of time. Alter the fabric of time and summon other versions of yourself from different timelines for multiplayer cooperative fights. Wield these powers against the Kasaar, the brutal conquerors who have enslaved your home world of Taraan.
ARC Continuum draws inspiration from games like Prince of Persia, Deus Ex, Infamous and Dishonored with more of a sci-fi focus. We felt there haven’t been many third person games that allow players to manipulate time since Prince of Persia, and it is something we really enjoyed and wanted to explore thoroughly in ARC Continuum.
So why Kickstarter?
We started development on ARC Continuum in 2015. After a successful pitch to the Canadian Media Fund (CMF), we received funding to develop the game. We hired the right people, and acquired the best tools to create a game that pushes the quality bar of indie games. However, in game development there are always hard decisions to be made and unfortunately some good features were cut.
Kickstarter will allow us to take ARC Continuum to the next level. We will be able to add back time powers, enemies and other features that did not make it. Every pledge will help us tweak and polish the game to make it the best it can be. By reaching our Stretch Goals, we will really go all out, bringing back designs and features from our original design.
We have received a lot of positive feedback online so far. Last year, our Greenlight application was quickly approved by the community. We believe there is incredibly high interest in a game like this and we want you to decide on how close this game gets to AAA quality.
We are also using Kickstarter as a platform to get feedback from the community moving forward with the game. We currently have a vertical slice almost ready for public release and we plan on sharing it with everyone who backs ARC Continuum.
The core game play of ARC Continuum revolves around using the ARC and its various powers to complete puzzles, overcome platforming and fight the many forces of the Kasaar.
The ARC functions as both a conduit for time powers and a powerful weapon. There are multiple different powers that are designed to work well with other powers, with certain weapon types or against specific enemies. The Tank is a slow and heavily armored enemy, but his shotgun is very effective at close range and will make short work of you if are near. Using your time Slow power on the Tank turns his pace to a standstill, allowing you to put distance between yourself and his shotgun blasts.
We currently have 6 powers planned for ARC Continuum:
Rewind: Allows you to reverse time on yourself. This power is ideally used to reverse damage or avoid tactical mistakes.
Shield: Creates a slice of time in front of you which freezes projectiles, holding them inert as they enter the shield. You may then redirect the frozen projectiles where you wish, effectively using the enemy's firepower against them.
Blink: Allows you to manipulate space time, dispersing yourself across short distances. Blink allows you to explore the world and reach places that’s difficult to reach on foot.
Dash: Part of the Blink power, Dash offers a quick forward movement in the direction you are facing. Dash is designed to quickly re-position yourself in combat.
Parallel Allies: There are infinite timelines, with infinite versions of Hadrian attempting the same goal. The ARC allows you to summon those alternate copies for a brief time, to either serve as a distraction or to aid in battle
Slow: It is a projectile that affects a localized area of time. Its explosion will instantly impede the flow of time to anything it comes in contact with. This power has uses both inside of and outside of combat, as it can be used to slow enemies and moving platforms alike.
Vortex: This power tears a rift in the fabric of time creating a time vortex that will pull any player or enemy to its destructive center. The Vortex is purely an offensive power and can take out multiple enemies, devastating anything caught in its gravitational force.
The ARC can also swap between multiple weapon modes, converting the power of time into deadly weapons that can remove enemies from existence.
Burst: The burst functions like a shotgun, devastating foes at close distances, but is inefficient at dealing with distant threats. The burst mode pairs well with dash, allowing players to quickly move from foe to foe, destroying them in close quarters.
Assault: The assault mode functions like a semi-automatic rifle and is an all-around solid weapon, capable at short, medium and long ranges. The assault mode is designed to work well with any power or any situation, but does not particularly excel in combination with other powers.
Precision: The precision mode functions like a sniper rifle, allowing you to see at greater distance and inflict great damage in a single shot. To get the most out of the precision mode, the Slow power can ensure that each shot hits its mark by reducing the target’s movement speed.
The world of ARC Continuum is built around an ancient civilization that has been lost to time. Throughout the game you must use your powers in creative ways to solve many puzzles and challenges during your journey.
Puzzles are not the only thing you must overcome — your home planet of Taraan is under the strict occupation of the Kasaar: a warlike race that travels the galaxy looking for worlds to conquer and technology to claim. They seek the power of the ARC and have deployed some of their deadliest troops to acquire it at all costs.
In ARC Continuum, parts of the Taraanian world are in time flux. These localized disturbances are the results of the experimentation in time technology. With the disruption in time, you have the opportunity to jump to alternate timelines where you can request help from other versions of yourself and complete cooperative multiplayer time objectives.
ARC Continuum is set on the ancient planet of Taraan, a world whose history is steeped in science, prosperity, betrayal and darkness. Long before recorded Taraan history, the people of Taraan lived in the ignorance of the planet’s power. However, one amongst them discovered the uniqueness of the planet: a raw and powerful energy that could tame the chaos of time. From this discovery, the ARC was created, a device capable of controlling the rhythm of life itself. With this power, a civilization flourished for centuries and disappeared without reason. Modern day Taraanians know little of this history but stories have been preserved in myths and legends, unaware that their cities are built on the very location where their past once flourished.
ARC Continuum is story-based game containing cutscenes using motion capture and facial tracking from real actors. The story follows a linear path, but each level contains room for exploration, with upgrades, hidden paths and other collectibles.
ARC Continuum focuses on Hadrian, an average person struggling to survive on a planet that has undergone years of military occupation. The people have grown used to the way of life, coming to accept it over the harsh penalty of civil disobedience.
This all changes when a mysterious stranger drags Hadrian into the heart of the conflict and reveals the ARC. For the first time someone on Taraan has the power to fight back.
We want our music to tell the many stories of the world of Taraan. Every environment is unique, with its own sound defined in the music. We want you to be immersed within the culture of Taraan and Kasaar. We chose Paul Ruskay, a veteran Audio Director and founder of the award-winning Studio X Labs. We pitched him the story and instantly, we hit it off. Paul was excited about about the vision of the game and had great ideas about fleshing out the audio experience. Paul has composed music for games such as Strike Suit Zero, Max Payne and most notably, the Homeworld series. Paul brings a depth of knowledge of the sci-fi genre that pushes ARC Continuum above and beyond the current soundscape of games.
To create the score for ARC Continuum, Paul wanted to do something a little different. The world of ARC Continuum contains ancient history merged with high science fiction. We had to find music that married these two concepts together seamlessly. Paul decided on the santoor, an ancient instrument with ties back to 1500 BC with a very unique and interesting feel, especially when mixed with the modern synth sounds of a traditional science fiction score.
By combining these two elements, we have tracks that express the many themes of the world, whether you are exploring ancient, buried hallways or the underbelly of a galactic warship.
The team at Akimbo Creations is immensely passionate about video games. We love crafting worlds, telling stories, and creating technologies for a better gaming experience. In today’s gaming industry, there are many tools available to indie studios to make ARC Continuum a high quality experience on a very modest budget.
ARC Continuum is built in Unreal Engine 4, allowing us to push lighting, shaders and rendering techniques previously available to AAA games. Cutscenes can be created, adjusted and edited in Sequencer in real-time. Designers can work directly with Unreal 4 Blueprint, allowing them to develop and polish game features with faster iterations.
Axis Neuron, a Kickstarter-backed motion capture suite is used to animate both in-game and cutscenes.
Faceware, a facial motion capture system, allows us to record actors' performances for our cutscenes. Ultimately, this allows us to create higher fidelity cutscenes for more impactful storytelling.
Substance Designer allows us to create beautiful textures for both our characters and environments.
Wwise is used to integrate dynamic, layered sound systems seamlessly into Unreal. We can create tracks that react to gameplay, giving responsive feedback in the middle of a heated firefight or pondering the complexity of an ancient puzzle.

The Stretch Goals in ARC Continuum focus on adding features to the game. Many of these rewards will be based off surveys from our backers because we value the input of everyone interested in the game. In addition, our $1,000,000 goal would allow us to develop ARC Arena, a multiplayer battle mode where players fight in teams against each other. Playing around with powers we found it fun to mix and match them in a multiplayer setting and wanted to really take it further in its own game mode. If we hit that goal, we will provide this game mode to everyone who pledged and received a copy of the game.
We set our Kickstarter budget at $100,000. We have already raised funding from CMF, but the extra funds will allow us to push the quality bar higher. This Kickstarter allows you to decide how far you want us to go.
We will put as much of our Kickstarter funds as possible back into the game. Development costs stack up very quickly: office space to work in, hardware to work on, software to work with and salaries so our employees can eat and sleep. Development covers the cost of designers, artists, programmers, sound designers, testers, cinematics team and the list goes on. To keep costs down, we have put a focus on digital rewards. This will ensure all your pledges go directly into making the game even better.
The budget breakdown is based upon us reaching our $100,000 goal. If we exceed it, then the additional funds will be allocated for more game development. We have a very lean development environment at Akimbo Creations and we will keep it that way to maximize the impact of your pledges.
Risks and challenges
With any project there is always a certain level of risk, but with ARC Continuum we have taken many steps to mitigate that risk. We pushed back our Kickstarter as far as possible to make sure the game was right for the campaign. Our intention is to give everyone who pledges a playable slice of the game and gather feedback to make the game better.
If we don't hit our desired target, the project won't be over, but instead the amount of time we can spend polishing features and adding features is shortened. This means we can't fine tune every aspect to perfection.
The biggest challenge with ARC Continuum is making sure all the pieces come together smoothly. We are working with new tech, especially for our cinematics, that requires a lot of research, planning and testing. To deal with these issues, we brought on board specialists in their field.
Every game development company faces challenges with bugs, be they indie studios or established corporations. We are nearly ready to release a vertical slice of the game to you, our players, who have shown their support for our game by pledging. We look forward to receiving quality feedback from you, our audience, to keep improving ARC Continuum, so we can deliver a game experience that we all want.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
