About this project
Thanks to all of our generous backers, The Art of Ralph McQuarrie ARCHIVES is going to happen! It's not too late to become part of the campaign—check below for our stretch goals, the first two of which have been unlocked!
Best known for his instrumental contributions to the making of the original Star Wars trilogy, Ralph McQuarrie has inspired several generations of film fans and artists. While much of his Star Wars artwork has been reproduced in numerous volumes over the years, his non-Star Wars work has previously only been available in The Art of Ralph McQuarrie, a limited edition that we (Dreams and Visions Press) published in 2007. That book is long out of print and now commands high prices on the secondary market.
With The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: ARCHIVES, we will bring back into print a career-spanning retrospective of Ralph McQuarrie’s non-Star Wars artwork. At 13” x 9.5”, this 432-page volume is not only offered at a more affordable price point than our original 2007 release, one third of the content is original to this edition. That's hundreds of Ralph McQuarrie illustrations spanning all aspects of his body of work.
We've been hard at work on the book for the past several months. Our efforts have not just been focused on assembling new art, but upgrading source materials where possible, and doing additional research to provide more details on many of the pieces within, both new and old. We are on track to finalize the book this summer, after which we will hand it off to the printer to meet our target release date.
The book will be available in two states: 1) a hardcover version with printed covers and 2) a deluxe clothbound individually numbered limited edition housed in a clothbound presentation traycase. Each copy will be smyth-sewn with head and tail bands to provide a sturdy binding that will last for years to come.
The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: ARCHIVES contains examples of Ralph's work in each of the following areas: Early technical illustration, movie posters, book covers, film and television production, other commercial illustration and a selection of personal pieces. In many cases we have examples of work that demonstrate Ralph's process, from his tiniest thumbnails to larger sketches, color comps and ultimately his finished paintings.
Here are a handful of two-page spreads from the book (the actual size of these spreads will be 26" x 9.5"):
Backers at the $75 level and above including the regular hardcover edition of ARCHIVES will receive a 10" x 8" bookplate signed by the authors with the cleaned up version of Ralph's 'Power of God' illustration.
Backers at the $150 level and above including the deluxe hardcover edition of ARCHIVES will also receive an 8" x 10" bookplate signed by the authors featuring a drawing to painting rendition of Ralph's first paperback cover for Ballantine Books.
While ARCHIVES will be an essential volume in its own right, this book will also be a perfect companion to the previous books of Ralph's art that we've published through the years (which are available in some of the reward packages offered):

As with all Kickstarter projects, we only receive the funds raised if we meet our funding goal, so we need your help in this epic undertaking. We hope you'll consider pledging your support at any level, and whether or not you're able to lend your support financially, we greatly appreciate your help spreading the word about our campaign to produce The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: ARCHIVES.
To thank you for your support with this project, we have come up with a number of different backer rewards. Several items can also be included as add-ons (by adjusting your pledge amount accordingly). And if you’re interested in any of our extremely limited high-end items, you can always add the dollar amount to any of the lower levels - just let us know when you make your pledge in case we need to adjust our inventory numbers on limited items.
All pledge amounts include USPS Media Mail shipping with tracking within the U.S. Please note, this Kickstarter campaign is only available for shipping within the United States. PLEASE REVIEW OUR FAQ for an explanation as to why international shipping isn't being offered, and rest assured that international fans WILL be able to order copies of the book (including the deluxe edition) from our website provided that our campaign is successful.
Risks and challenges
In the seven years since we published our first book, The Art of Ralph McQuarrie, we have successfully produced several other book projects on-time and within budget, including the two-volume Art of Tomb Raider, several more books on Ralph McQuarrie and his art, and a portfolio of paintings from the 1978 Battlestar Galactica television series.
We are always evaluating lessons learned from prior publishing projects to ensure each subsequent product we produce is the best it can be. While we are conservative with our delivery estimates, a publication schedule can be impacted by forces outside of our direct control. Additionally, we pride ourselves on the high quality of our products, and in the rare instance that they fail to meet our rigorous quality standards when received from the printer, that can require re-work. We're confident that we have selected the appropriate partner to bring The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: Archives to market meeting our high quality standards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We are aware that Ralph has a legion of fans outside the US. We arrived at the difficult decision of only shipping within the US for our Kickstarter campaign for a number of reasons. First, shipping a large hardcover book overseas is very expensive - and can be as much or more as the cost of the book. Those costs of international shipping can change between now and when the book is released, which would require us to estimate even higher amounts than might be required, which would mean a higher cost to our international customers. If we did accept international pledges, even with significant shipping costs, those added funds go towards the total we need to hit our goal, without actually representing additional funding that is needed in order for the project to be successful.
Rest assured, assuming we meet our funding goal, we will be offering copies of The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: ARCHIVES for pre-order directly through our website (http://www.dreamsandvisionspress.com).
In the mean time, we encourage our international fans to help spread the word to ensure we meet our funding goal, and can make this much needed volume available to everyone!
Yes. We have not allocated all of the projected print run of the deluxe edition to Kickstarter, and we plan to have copies available for pre-order on our website, provided we meet our funding goal.
It's easy! Say you want to add the Power of God Artist's Edition to your pledge for the Deluxe hardcover. All you have to do is submit (or change - you can always go back and add more to your existing pledge, and even change reward levels) your pledge with the amount of both items (in this example $190 - $40 for the Power of God and $150 for the Deluxe hardcover), and keep the higher reward level (the Deluxe edition). At the end of a successful campaign, we'll send out backer surveys where you'll be able to indicate any add ons that are covered by your pledge. And if you want a little bit of everything we've got listed, let us know and we can plan accordingly, and adjust inventory levels as needed. Just use the Contact Us link above the Pledge options.
